lovehandle
we r all learning from one another sharing interesting stuff and cheap stuff like where to buy eg this cat and all the stuff provided is sellg at 50 cents , gd for decorating your office space or even your residence! v cheap n cute (Don't be narrow minded to see this as a planting or gardening thread, I see this as a good site for buying gifts and décor , nowadays pp r into sustainability and organic stuff) from what are some of the special rare trees of our UNESCO botanic gardens to xmas/CNY décor (u will be amazed how creative they r).........nature is beautiful (the reason why I m at BW is cos I wanted to add value , helping the world better itself , not reading nonsensical stuff ie not beautiful) another claimed that he is using clicked and grow type capsules hence he doesn't dare to share @ this thread cos all seemed expert no1 is born an expert, the world is evolving constantly, hence we need good threads to learn new things (someone even complained that why certain postings are posted 24hrs around the clock cos this is a social media and no1 sleeps , we have members in the group from other ctries contributing too n we welcome that) we are all trying to help one another by gathering info , though easily one can google on his own but w certain narrow perspective or limitation I trust we have gay students and pp working in the horticulture, they create this thread initially, they r also in the UF fb posting too , though very discrete and in the closet , can easily guess from their work and fb postings Edited February 21, 2018 by lovehandle

bluerunner
Hello gardening enthusiasts i noticed in one of my pots, there are lots of ants inside the soil. Mostly black coloured ants. The plant is doing well. Is it common or is it something I need to take precaution? Kindly advise.
lovehandle
if it is a bit , it is a good sign that that nature is working fine, they are not eating your fruits right? Check are there mealy bugs underneath, as it might be ants r sapping their fluid - an indication but if it is a trail of army seen all the time, most will kill them, not sure why though (cos I have not seen ants not appearing in the env eg everywehere in sg bus stop there are ants, on beach or children playgrd) old sch will say keep it then (this is how nature works) but timids and the kiasees will say otherwise

Mostly black coloured ants. The plant is doing well. Is it common or is it something I need to take precaution? Kindly advise. Just take note that ants can protect honeydew-producing, sucking insects. These bugs do a great deal of damage. If you manage your ant populations, you will be closer to managing scale, mealybug, aphid, and whitefly populations in the garden. Just dont let the ant population get out of control! What zi do for my backyard is that I apply sanitary, and chemical controls. Exclude ants in my garden by wrapping trunks or stems with a collar of heavy paper, surveyors tape, or fabric tree wrap. Then, I can apply a very sticky barrier like Tanglefoot to the paper, tape or fabric. If not, you can always trim your plants so that they do not touch other plants or structures. Leave only a single access point so ants will have to climb the trunk to reach the foliage. To keep ants out of my house, I caulk potential entry points, keep ant food sources (sweets and proteins) closed tightly, and limit their access to water. All in all, Keep it clean! If its just one pot with ants, its still manageable now. Dont be misguided by just seemingly positive side!
bluerunner
@FluteGuan thanks for your advise. So far I only see the ants in one pot and they will only appear when I dig into the soil. They are all within the pot ; or at least that my observation. I will take not to make sure the pot is not touching any other structure. Will also start looking at some pesticides that handle ants too. Hope I do not need to abandon the entire pot. Plant inside that pot is blooming! Edited March 25, 2018 by bluerunner Typo

Plant inside that pot is blooming! Lol.. @bluerunner . u mean me, issit? i am @FluteGuan lah I dont have other multiple nicks. Lol much The ants should be deep inside your pot because they will be busy tunneling. That is the good part about the ants because it loosens the soil, which is better for irrigation, Yes, do ensure the pots do not touch each other, at least the affected pot with ants, You can use a mild pesticide, that will not endanger your bloom. Conversely, you can repot with new soil, if the ants bother you too much. Have fun gardening, I had a lot of fun planting bunga telang, the blue flowers that I use for making ice blue drinks. Lol much.used to have ants, but I have successfully repotted and do not have such issues anymore. Edited March 25, 2018 by FluteGuan
bluerunner
@FluteGuan lol. Thanks for pointing out I got the wrong “flute”. I dun think re-potting is possible ‘cos the root is everywhere now. I may have to live w this issue if I cannot get ride of the ants. Some amount of ants within the pot I’m ok. I just need to make sure the ants do not form trails outside of the pot.

If repotting is too much of a hassle, you can also try this. around the areas of your pot (with ants), use those anti-ants chalk, or you can draw on the pot itself. That way, the ants wont be able to form a trail outside your pot. If your bloom os not edible flowers or fruits, these chalk wont be a problem at all. Besides, you are using it externally, not in the pot itself, Btw , some brands call it Chinese chalk or miraculous chalk. Lol much, When I was residing in Melbourne I was saddened to know that the ant chalk is toxic and banned from most Western nations. But guess what, it is still widely available via the internet and Chinatown markets. In sg, you wont have a problem buying them from those sundry stores, like chinese provision shops. I am just sharing from experience. Lol much. It is edifying to see fellow gardeners with green fingers!

We are all learning. Lol much "Ants in a houseplant are a sign that your plant has other problems, and that they’re going to get worse."Read more at Gardening Know How: Ants In Container Plants: Help, I Have Ants In My Houseplants https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/hpgen/ants-in-houseplants.htm" Well, there. @bluerunner , as Ive posted. If the ants are not too much of a hassle, and its not a houseplant, but a pot left in the garden, it's not a big deal. Lol much.
lovehandle
it is sad to see that even when discussing gardening one have to display her love for vouchers in a forum consistently Members, do note that this is a thread on gardening, not a platform to do overcharacterisation of our own members Tks! @bluerunner for bringing up her many nicknames, she has more, in fact! shyc
I had ants recently too in some of my potted plants, resulting in the plants' death. Upon investigation found ants and eggs and almost no roots in my dead plants. So my guess is maybe the ants had built and lay eggs causing the roots of my plants to die off slowly. So what may look like 'small' matters, it can grow to be 'BIG' issues. I also tend to bring in my potted plants and give them a good shower once a while. Read somewhere that this may help drown what's not required inside the soil as well as bring in fresh oxygen to promote roots growing. Something to ponder about but do make sure there is good drainage first. FluteGuan

shyc
"Shower" as in shower. Place pots in bathroom, turn on shower and let the plants get a good shower. The water will drain thru the soil and hence bring fresh oxygen into the soil at the same time drowning certain bugs.

FluteGuan
Hmmm So it seems that if someone's own pot has ants, he will shower them outside. But, if its someone else pot has ants, , let the ants irrigate the pot and soil, as a part of nature, Okay, we all learn, lol much

Am sure this will kill any ants and their descendants. Bonsai soil usually will drain off well. I used to water my bonsai this way.
