Guest Guest
Hey, my seventy plus mother doing ok leh, stil living life as normal. At first i dun really beliv in stayin indoor since i have no mask, aircon or purifier, best i can do is shut doors n windows. It was this morning when i opened the door then i can SMELL the big diff!!! Stay indoor, but with de door n windows shut. N one more thing, i m startg to feel a lil weird in de chest tis morning. Looks like have to give gym a miss.I worry for those without air con or purifier, they do help a lot. Closing the windows with no proper ventilation could be stuffy but better than the toxic haze. For those who have, count your blessings. But make sure you give your air con some rest. My neighbour on his continuously for 2 days & they had broken down. There's no need to on all. The air need to be clean & fresh, not necessarily cold. Need to learn to conserve energy, too. I turned on the air con (which I hated) in one room, opened the door, used a fan to circulate to the living room. My kitchen & toilet were closed off. When I woke up from a good night & went to the kitchen, there's a very distinct 'chow tar' smell. Retire early, have a good night sleep to build up immunity to combat the haze the next morning. Longpath
This message is not Directly from my friend.A friend works for NEA and here's what she advises: Hi all, pls make sure that u keep all windows shut at all times n bathroom doors too. Wat u breathe in gets lodged deep in ur lungs n can't get out. It's the PM2.5 particulate matter that's dangerousMake sure u cover your nose when outdoorsSeems last night psi was actually 462 and not 300+ as reported.FYI!!!These particles are called PM10 (10 refers to the size in microns of the particulate matters). Breathing in an excess of these particles can increase a person’s risk of developing viral and bacterial infections, as well as heart and lung diseases, cancer and stroke. While the bigger air particles are filtered out by the respiratory tract, tiny particles are typically deposited in the lungs. These tiny particles can accumulate over time and harm the body.So wear a substitute mask if N95 is out of stock. Please TC all! lausanne
You know, at the beginning of the year, when I was transiting through Beijing, the air was just as bad, probably even worse. You also probably heard that their air quality was so bad that it exceeded whatever measurements or scales that were in use at that time. I just got off the plane one day before this article was written, and I had totally no idea what it was when I deplaned and smelt a burning soot smell in the air - could it be the airplane fuel burning? It doesn't smell like that, I told myself. Later I was told that I came at one of the worst times of the year when the air was at its worst. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/13/science/earth/beijing-air-pollution-off-the-charts.html?_r=0 http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/02/28/the-most-shocking-photo-of-beijing-air-pollution-ive-ever-seen/ Is there any other official source, other than the one by the NEA? The US Embassy in Beijing and Consulate in Shanghai run their own indexes, as an alternative to the official government index. I just checked the US embassy in Singapore website, and there is apparently no alternative index. We really should know about it if the pollution goes "off the scale". lausanne
Actually, to stretch the discussion further, can this can be considered a kind of warfare? I mean, how different is it as compared to poisoning our water supplies, or cutting off our water supplies? Our air is literally being poisoned. I think there are also defense related aspects to this as well, not just the environment related aspect.
Guest Guest
"Singapore child is being suffocated," says ESM Goh As the haze in Singapore creeps up to over 400, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has declared that the "the Singapore Child is being suffocated". SINGAPORE: As the haze in Singapore creeps up to over 400, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has declared that the "the Singapore Child is being suffocated". In his latest Facebook post, he asked how can the child not scream? Mr Goh noted how former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi used to say that Malaysians and Singaporeans are like neighbours living in a pair of semi-detached houses. Mr Goh said that what each does will affect the other. "So we have to be considerate in our behaviour, like not putting on the TV too loudly or burning our garden refuse openly if the smoke will enter our neighbour's house," he added. Indonesia, said Mr Goh, does not share a semi-detached house with Malaysia or Singapore. However, he said its detached bungalow is in the same housing estate. Thus, Mr Goh said Mr Badawi's analogy of neighbourly behaviour still applies. He added that Sumatra is a big place and forest and peat fires are not easy to put out, unlike lallang or bush fires, which are small and confined. "They burn and smoulder over thousands of acres in remote places far from the reach of fire fighters," he said. Thus, he said it is best to prevent man-made, illegal fires from being started in the first place. But as of now, Mr Goh said that "the Singapore child better learn to survive the tortuous smog and haze."- CNA/ac

Guest Guest
Do you guys know if water humidifiers are useful as well in place of actual air purifiers? eg: No, we use humidifiers because the air is too dry, for example cold weather or in an air con space. If not , we would wake up with nose bleed due dry nasal passages. The air is cooler due to the water vapour from the humidifier. It does not purify the air. Air Purifier are those with filters. There's also LED indicators to let you know when you have to change/wash the filter. The price range are from $200 up to $800. Some latest air con model has this function plus ionizer. There are the cheaper brands like Mistral, Sharp has some mid range model. But the really good ones costs like $800 or even higher. Best to have a purifier in each room, with or without the fog. It's a good investment for yourself & family.

Also dun turn air con full blast at 16 degrees for 24 hrs. It is still bearable now. Turn it on before you sleep, then on the fan to circulate. Dun overload the Power Plant.
