Finally......after days of still trying to sound aloof

Indonesia formally apologizes for smoky haze

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono apologized Monday to Singapore and Malaysia for record-setting pollution caused by forest fires in his country.

"For what is happening, as the president, I apologize to our brothers in Singapore and Malaysia," Yudhoyono said. He asked for their understanding and said Indonesia is working hard to fight the fires, which are often set by farmers to clear fields.

Jakarta dispatched planes and helicopters last week to battle the blazes in peat swamp forests as well as plantations in Riau province on Sumatra island, where the smoke easily drifts across the sea to the two neighboring countries.

Speaking at a news conference after a Cabinet meeting to discuss the issue, Yudhoyono said he has ordered an investigation of the fires.

"There should be a thorough investigation. In my analysis, there are both natural and human factors," he said, adding that the wind direction has caused the smoke to concentrate in Singapore and Malaysia.

Malaysian declared a state of emergency on Sunday in a district where the haze triggered one of the country's worst pollution levels, while Singapore has urged people to remain indoors due to "hazardous" levels of pollution.

Last week, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono slammed critical comments by Singaporean officials about the haze, saying they should have been conveyed through diplomatic channels instead of publicly.

"Singapore should not act like children, making all that noise," he said.

Also Monday, Minister of Transportation Evert Ernest Mangindaan warned all airlines about dangerous flying conditions in Jambi, Riau and Bengkulu because of the haze.

He said any aircraft flying in the areas must first obtain permission from Air Traffic Control.

No one is complaining. Just pointing out that the rain will be acidic n it aint good for yr wellbeing. Seriously, no one is complaining. Just stating facts n ultimately...how da haze destroys da environment n how it is a double edged sword.

Singaporeans are a bit lacking when it come to expressing themselves, this is one area where most of us can brush up and improve on. In the meantime just see those complaints as "voicing out concerns". Beyond the rants we can actually see that there is often valid points and basis in the words though the tone and writing style can be adjust to a more cordial manner.

Indonesian minister on haze: S'pore and KL telling stories to world to

discredit us

An Indonesian minister has accused both Singapore and Malaysia for trying to discredit Indonesia over the haze, and said that both countries should "know themselves".

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said, "Let me remind our friends from Malaysia, Singapore, don't just because of the haze, tell stories to the world.

"It's called sharing, you go through good times together, don't make noise to the world when things go bad. It's just like husband and wife, don't take your quarrel outside."

Indonesian news agency, Antara News, reported that the government was wary of some parties trying to carry out a "black campaign" to take advantage of the haze situation to discredit Indonesia globally.

Mr Jero had also told reporters that both Malaysia and Singapore had made much profit from Indonesia all this while, reports an article in The Straits Times.

But now, he said, they were now trying to discredit Indonesia when they should help.

He cited how Malaysia had benefited from bilateral cooperation with Indonesia, including electricity imports from Indonesia, and how Singapore had benefited from Indonesia's gas supply as well as the large number of Indonesian tourists visiting Singapore.

Both countries should sit together to resolve the problem without making a big deal of it to the world, he added.

Moreover, there are indications Malaysian companies are involved in burning to clear land, he said.

And if this is true, both countries' image will be tarnished globally, he said.

"Neighbours shouldn't work together where things are good, but blame one another when they are bad," he said.

The Indonesian government, he said, was also doing its utmost to put out the fires.

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 years later...

The haze is back. And getting worse.

The 3-hour PSI at 3.00am on Friday (Sep 11) was 248, while the 24-hour PSI was at 154-176.

This unhealthy level...the elderly, pregnant women, those with lung and heart issues etc should avoid going out, the rest are to minimise "outdoor physical exertion"....yet friday is an important day....
