that's correct what yhtang says. At the same time, tourists are kind of excused if they don't and nobody will say anything. I have seen some, no problems. However I might add that one would feel kinda awkward among all the black-clad Thais wearing brightly colored clothes.

 

Having said that, please note that the "recommended" period of wearing black for all Thais of 30 days will be over this weekend. Only government emplyess will be required to wear black for a full year. So after this weekend, things should be back to normal. To what extent people will still wear black out of their own initiative remains to be seen. But the tourist-excuse will certainly fully apply.

Why's people here always think Thais are always poor.  I'm sg poor too. I go Bangkok only because it's near and cheap and I stay in very cheap few dollars Chinatown hotel.

yes, pretty much any river, or indeed any body of water. Many many people go to the various parks and release them into the lakes there. Of course they can't go far there, and the next day they will just be scooped up by the city trash collectors (kinda sad)
