Take BTS to Saphan Taksin Station.  Once out of station, turn left and there is a running Asiatique shuttle boat.    The shuttle boat is about 5 - 15 minutes and it takes 5 - 10 minutes to reach Asiatique.

Ikutube, is Asiatique worth visiting? What is it? Is it an upmarket version of Jatuchak or is it a Jatuchak/MBK blend?  Are all shops now rented out and operating? Thanks for info.

I guess it depends on one's expectation.  Asiatique is definitely more 'atas' than chatuchak and I am guessing prices there are slightly expensive too.  It is a place to go if one can't make it for the weekend market.

Not sure if all shops are now rented out and operating.

Anyway, BKK is pretty cool today .. temperature outside is probably around 21 - 22 deg and sunny (rather rare though it occurs mainly in Dec here)  Guessing, it will be cooler in the evening and night time.  And, it is very much peaceful with no protest in sight in most shopping/tourists areas (from silom to MBK and to Asoke areas).

Platinum + Chatuchak + Mbk. More walking space.

You get a lot of stuff there and opens daily from 3pm. At night the scenery is nice and u can buy a beer n chill there.

I actually don't why everyone is so crazy about Chatuchak? I've been there once and it's so hot, cramped and smelly... and the things you find there are mostly bad quality... unless you look carefully through all the stalls.... but with the hot weather.... not for me.

I did enjoy the more artsy part though, selling all those paintings and sculptures. At least that was a bit different from other markets/malls.

Waaaa going back so soon? Your first visit was just about a month ago. :). It must have been good. What did you do, please share.

Haha... well if you have scanned through this thread, my last visit to Bangkok is not last month. Its in October. And its not my first visit ;-)

Experience was good and i have met someone nice online but we doesnt have chance to meet at all so i thought of going there soon since it shouldnt be too hot to visit around this period

Chatuchak is too hot and cramp

I found Chatuchak not hotter or more cramped than other places.  But I bought there a good number of clothes that were very good deals. Also I found there a few healthy snacks to eat while keeping away from the tons of junk food.

Mind to share where can I buy Thai Cultural Wood Craving Art Piece in Bangkok? Is there a market in Bkk dedicating to art?

I only know one shop in Pattaya selling beautiful thai wood craft. But don't know any in Bkk.

Is it noisy at Bally's Studio Suites Silom?

Depends on the room. I was there last week. On the first night I was given a room with windows over soi 2. The music kept me up till 3 or 4am, and I was wearing ear plugs. I asked for a change of room the next day and was given a windowless room on the other side of the building. Much much better. Some reviewers say rooms on higher floors are quieter, but I don't see how a few floors will make any difference if you are facing soi 2.

Adjacent to Chatuchak Market, there is a handicraft section.  It is in between Chatuchak Weekend Market and JJ Mall.  Then again, I am not sure what types of woodcrafts you are looking for.  You can go to this section on weekdays but most shops open on weekends.

Also, you may want to venture it at JJ Mall, second floor.  Or cross over to the opposite side of Chatuchak for more shops.

Easier to take the mrt to Kamphaeng Phet to go to these places.

Is jj mall = union mall?

I dont know what the JJ in JJ Mall stands for. I am guessing that it stands for JatuJak/Chatuchak.

No, JJ Mall is just next to Jatuchak, near the mrt Chatuchak. Union Mall is further along i.e. one mrt stop away, mrt Phanon Yotin.

JJ Mall is much nearer to the Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station than Chatuchak Station.  Should one travel with BTS, transfer at Mo Chit BTS and hop from Chatuchak MRT Station to Kamphaeng Phet.

I always prefer to drop off at Kamphaeng Phet.  Once out of the station, you are already inside the weekend market.

The ongoing political protest that took place at Asoke Intersection (Asoke BTS and Sukhumvit MRT).

Makeshift stalls selling 'protest' items.

There was a rally just outside Terminal 21.

When were you last there? It is not as hot as it used to be - ventilators have been installed on rooftops and I think that helps draw the hot air out. Cramped cos it is so popular, you just need to make sure that you are not in a rush so that you make allowance to negotiate the different bodies that pass you by. Smelly? Well yes, some parts of it but hey, doesnt that add to the ambience? :).  I like it cos I cant find a place like this anywhere else in the world, not that I know of anyway. There are so many shops there and whilst the same stuff might be sold, there are shops selling enough different stuff to keep me occupied for a half to a whole day.  I mean when in BKK, one shops, eats and goes for massages. Chatuchak provides for at least half a days activity, between massages :).  Talking of which, there are only 2 massage shops there and they are always packed with people wanting/having foot massages!

Well here's a picture update from this weekend from a friend of mine in BKK.

As you can see, it's outside Gaysorn and Central World shopping malls, at the big road crossing where the 4 face buddha is if I'm not mistaken.

But it's still safe to travel there, neither Singapore government or the Swiss (the one i'm looking at usually as I'm from there) government issued any warnings regarding travels to Thailand as of now.

However, he promised to come back even stronger after the holiday to shut down Bangkok in a campaign to root out the influence of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The self-appointed leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee told protesters from the Democracy Monument stage on Friday night that they were free to return home and come back to the capital after the New Year holidays.

He said the PDRC would not leave even "one square inche" of space in Bangkok for Thaksin supporters as the protesters would step up their rallies against caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in January.

The group's stronghold will remain intact as key figures including Anchalee Paireerak and Satit Wongnongtoey said the PDRC and all leaders would hold a chanting ceremony on the night of Dec 31 into the early hours of Jan 1, followed by a food offering to monks on the first day of 2014.

Guest CNSguys

My partner and I are going to BKK on 9 January. We are staying at Babylon for a few days then off to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat and staying at MEN’s in Siem Reap for a few days, then back to Babylon. We are thinking of going to Jey Spa, Hero’s, Guy Spa and possibly Aqua, but not sure about that one. Any comments or suggestions?
