Because sometime the price you pay here you either get badly maintain second hand or they are prices at a premium. Need to locate some good electronics expert on how to fix this issue.... worst case, possibly need to bypass the speed lock, and use an outboard voltage regulator to fine tune the platter rpm. So that's why I prefer to go to the repair shops directly. There is another Hi-fi repair guy at parklane shopping ctr that I've been to some years ago... hope he is still in business. The vinyls are actually on consignment from Hear Records, and they are all pre-loved, second hand ones. 12" singles start from S$20, and most of the LPs are between S$24 - S$30. Zenn Audio sits just behind this Bedok Market Place, in it it's a haven for vinyl collectors like myself... As you can see from the photos above, the place mainly sells pre-loved 2nd hand records, and most of them are from the 80s era. Apart from English titles, you'll be able to find Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese) and Malay titles too! Price-wise I would say it's very reasonable, and if you were to search hard enough, you'll be able to find some very good bargains too... To top it all, there's a very friendly lady by the name of Julie who's ready to help you with any titles that you're looking for. The icing on the cake is she will even help you clean up the vinyls you've selected at no extra charge at all!!! I spent a very fruitful Sunday afternoon at Zenn Audio, and my best buy is this 7" colour vinyl at only S$5!!! Zenn Audio has to be my record store of the year so far, and I'll be back, for sure! Is it the alleged higher quality of analog over digital (no digitizing steps), or the likeness for the covers? Is lower cost any concern? Are the latest albums also released as records? I liked records very much before the era of CDs. I still have about a hundred of them, mostly classical music. Recently I repaired my old turntable, a great linear servo-driven Technics, and I started to listen to them. They sound better than I thought they would after getting used to digital recordings. If records could be played indefinitely without degradation, like it is with digital recordings, I would hear them more, for some nostalgia. It turns out that there are optical turntables that scan the disk not with a stylus but with laser beams. I found the ELP LT-1XA Laser Turntable, with a list price of US$20,500. Well.. my nostalgia does not go so far! From a practical standpoint, I find nothing to object in a digital recording, a MP3 file, even at lower resolutions. Great advantage is that one saves the taking it out of the cover, placing it in the turntable, playing it, taking it out of the table and back into the cover, then storing back the disk. Maybe the cost of used disks is close to nothing? But the price of playing music videos on youtube is... zero! And it often has video. And one can have a collection of digital recordings in much less space than disks (a tiny MP3 player, for example). I imagine that what was recorded in used disks is now all on youtube. But... A Keyword like " Audiophile", once mentioned, phrases like "don't cost a bomb", "reasonable", "basic"... all goes out the window heheh. By most mere mortal's standard, its all going to be about compromises. Let me give use this analogy, You are not going to get Brad Pitt but you can likely get winner of Singapore Mr Personality contest. Audiophile is a whole difference realm all together. Even at the so called 'Entry Level' category. If for example, paying $100 per metre each side of speaker cable surprises you, (most expensive I had handle $30k per pair) re-arranging your entire room to be more acoustically suited to your sound system, making space for a stable platform to place your turntable, pre-amp, power amp or tube amp, possibly an equalizer if your room is sonically challenged and a good speaker system capable of covering the widest freq of audio signals matched to your amp (amplifier) that is able to power it thorough competently.... if all this sound like a troublesome mess before you even put your stylus on your record.... you know what 'compromise' means. Also, how musical are your ears for music of your choice. Also choice of music determine to a good extent which form of equipment to buy. I like for example jazz vocals from classics to the modern contemporary.. thus I like warmth. So if you have had something played with a tube-amp. If you have good ears from listening to music from your mobile or other media players, listening to that same song powered with good turntable to a tube amp pushing that signal into a god pair of speakers to create a nice club sound stage, there's nothing like it. And that's where the whole pursuit of accurate sound fidelity becomes 'very pocket burning' and for those who do, compromise is a very frightening and emotional word to use. heh I know folks who throw CPF redrawal on it. Counting the days they can turn 55 to get their hands to buy a dream system. Ya ordinary layman. heheh Just to give you a hint of what 'hardcore' audiophile people are like even in Singapore. One I know who have speakers, alone cost more than a BMW 325 or based 5 series. Who even "scrub' his electricity current output to his system to clean the noisy dirty frequencies that our Singapore Power is not able to clean hahah... Just to squeeze out that last bit of purity of sound reproduction (0.0001%) just to get it to as close to how the sound engineer tweak and produce that song audio. When your listening over the years has elevated you to that level and you have the means for it or like some who will eat bread and water just to own and listen to it all the time. Scary. Don't go there. heheh. Mere mortals, be prepared to compromise. A lot. Personally, a good system will still be at least a good 10k. Plus moving stuff about a little if you like a relatively good sound stage and transparency. What will help you is, you have never heard a really good sound system if you ask this question. ( wireless sound system / speakers / audio (NOT for car audios) )He mentioned his purchase and how much back and forth it was just to condition his sound system. You really have to enjoy music as a person to go that far. Casual people who care little about music fidelity, music selection, timbrel of instruments; competency of sound engineers or producer will get little satisfaction from buying anything pricey to play their music. Like crappy electronic dance music and lollipop artistes (rap or on hit wonders non AAA star artistes) you are wasting your money as this music has lazy audio production quality in them that a good sound system can not 'draw' out of them. Too much compression for example, for those who know what I mean. Badly balanced mixing. Miking is bad. And yes some are on records too since badly produced album do exist before digital. heheh so ya, not all your albums require a good sound system to play back. I cringe when ever I heard old HK, Taiwan or Singapore made albums of the 60s., 70s and even 80s especially. heh Records are analog devices. Old School. Not digital when you receive the signal from a turntable. So the delivery system you buy is bias to that to an enthusiast. This is what happen when you sleep at 6pm and woke up at 2am heheh.. I get even more long-winded about silly stuff floating in my head. . And too many hobbies. And people think I am all about dildos and anal sex only LOL. I too am looking at Audio Technica the more affordable ones to play my really small collection and yes I am staying away from the crosley! It offers you the simplified hookup to your computer, if you find that is something that you could use to stream the music to other speakers around your home. Perhaps later on, you may upgrade to a better turntable, when you are decided on the configuration of your Audio System. You need to have a budget in mind, as the Turntable and Speakers will be where you spend the larger portion of your budget. Checkout the shops over at Adelphi good of variety. Vinyl as a hobby is not cheap Since vinyl has experienced a rebirth in interest (some go for the "retro" feel, others for the "sound"), more new recordings have vinyl pressings released. However, do realise that vinyl is an analogue format, while many modern studios use digital recording and mixing systems. Many of the newer pop recordings suffer from dynamic compression, and may not sound good on vinyl. So do consider the recording and mastering before shelling out on a record. 2. Vinyl is hard to maintain in Singapore From dust to fungus, you will need to clean your vinyl records on a regular basis to reduce the amount of background crackle and pop. Many more dedicated vinyl collectors actually have vinyl cleaning machines. Otherwise, some of the vinyl shops in Singapore also offer a cleaning service for a few dollars a pop. Do consider this, since you may find it too cumbersome, and not worth continuing with this hobby. Also, you will probably need to "deep-clean" secondhand vinyl (from places like Red Point) or hand-me-downs, since they are likely to be laden with dirt in the grooves. 3. Vinyl playback may require special equipment If you are playing vinyl via USB into your computer, do ask why you are listening to vinyl instead of the digital format of the music. Lossless formats, like FLAC, are far more "convenient" and "transportable", since they can also be stored on your mobile phone. If you use a record player with RCA plugs for output, you may require a Phono amp. This is a quirk of the format, such that the sound encoded on the disc boosts the higher frequencies, and hence a Phono amp actually is used to return the balance of frequencies. As a beginner, with an entry-level player, you can look for an integrated amplifier with a built-in phono amp. If you already have a music playing set-up (ie. amplifier and speakers), you can look for a cheaper dedicated phono amp to plug your record player into the system. Remember that vinyl is a rather "fragile" format, that will experience wear and tear. Store your vinyl upright to reduce the possibility of warping. This was on the top of the list. Pet Shop Boys 1986 single ‘Love Comes Quickly from their debut album ‘Please’. With ‘That’s My Impression’ on the other side, this is an original 1986 Italian pressing. The cover is a little worn out but it still sounds perfect. Found this tucked away in a crate full of 12” singles. Can't wait to go back there and pick up more records!
