Perfume / Cologne / EDT Discussion (Compiled)

I was at Bkk airport last week and tried on Kenzo's latest scent for men- Kenzo Power and it is love at first sniff. Very much like Dior Homme- this scent was done by the same perfumer. But it is really wonderful stuff and I can't wait for it to arrive here in Singapore.

This afternoon I went to the first Sephora store in Singapore at Taka and I find the perfume selection there very disappointing. They basically carry the same popular brands as any other departmental stalls. And the price is just not competitive at all. I got a bottle of YSL Live Jazz edt 100ml the other day at $35 from my regular perfume shop. Here they are selling at $120++....!

This gorgeous yandao at Taipei duty free recommended me Hermes Terre d'Hermes - it has since become my signature scent! Smells so good on me - makes me feel like a naked Tarzan after showering under a waterfall in the rainforest. Lots of heady citrus notes before a long earthy masculine finish that stays with me even till the evening. Very special.

Someone did ask me what is the best way to wear a perfume. I have been reading the expert advice at Basenotes and this is one way which I have yet to try-

'The last method is the one i love the most. It works best with animalistic and sexy fragrances like the power 80s' accord of vertiver+patchouli. Fragrances like Caron's 3rd Man for example and also those that contain civet or ambergris benefit the most. The technique is simple. Just spray to your chest and wear light clothing over it. Something porous like cotton works best.'

I agree, Terre D'hermes is very nice.

I think colognes are a real must. The scent you choose compliments your mood for the day. I have a variety of colognes, each to suit my mood, the colour of my attire, the event I am attending or the way I feel that day:

In my current collection:

Terre D'Hermes

Hermes (Orange)

Farenheit - Dior

Chanel - Pour Homme

Chanel - Egoiste

Chanel - Anateus

Kenzo Power is a nice new and refreshing one..

I prefer scents that are more musky, woody, or citrusy

Read this wonderful article on perfume in GQ- a mini crash course on appreciating the finer scents.

'Iris? "Juice"? Masculines? Yes, real terms - and actually really useful. We asked scent critic Chandler Burr for a crash course in applying, storing, and mastering the World of Fragrance.

Fact vs Fiction

So what is cologne exactly?

Well, not what you think. You and every other American male have been programmed by marketers to think cologne is for men and perfume is for women. Completely wrong. Don't freak out (seriously, don't freak out) but in the original French, the word for "fragrance" - for both sexes, is parfum; cologne is a very specific parfum, a light version that comes from the city of Koln (thus the name), based on citrus (lemon, grapefruit, bergamot).

But obviously I should wear "men's" frances, right?

Wrong again. Anyone who knows anything about scent (that's you now) knows that dividing fragrances in "masculines" and "feminines", as the industry does, is just a marketing device to give straight American guys psychological permission to wear them (which European and gay guys don't need). As Hermes perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena puts it "Scent is art. Is there a painting only for women? A symphony for men?" Authentic houses don't gender their highest-end scents: Tom Ford's Private Blend, the Hermessence collection, Chanel's Les Exclusifs, Armani Privé.

Where and How to Apply

1. The tops of your forearms - and skip your wrists.

2. On either side of your neck.

3. A shot inside your T-shirt and down your back.

4. For God's sake, watch the volume. Hopefully, you're not playing your iPod so loudly passersby can hear it - you shouldn't be blasting your scent, either.

Where to Store It

Best: In the refrigerator. Constant and cool temperature, no light to damage the juice, as little oxygen exposure as possible.

Worst: On a sunny windowsill or your bathroom, where the climate fluctuates with each shower.

What to Look For

If you haven't done a thorough recon of what's out there since high school - and you've never heard of perfume makers like Le Labo, Serge Lutens, Andy Tauer (he's Swiss) and Frederic Malle - you're starting at zero. They produce things with the three technical aspects you want: (1) persistence (it lasts more than thirty minutes on your skin) (2) performance (how well it diffuses when sprayed) and (3) structure (the raw materials fit well together). The fourth quality is your own: Do you love it? Do other people? The only way to know is to try several. Keep one on your right arm, one on your left, and pay attention to who notices.

What to Avoid

Steer clear of anything that reads "Dad," stamps an invisible date on you (1986, say), or suggest you want to start a harem. And don't worry about whether it smells like it's for a guy, or be seduced by "masculine" classifications like "woods," "citrus," and "spice." Focus on whether it smells good. Dior Homme is an iris for men and one of the best scents you can buy. The Different Company has an amazing, smoky, spicy rose, Rose Poivrée (unisex!), and applying Comme des Garcons 2 for women is like putting on a $2,000 pair of shoes.

The Well-Groomed Man's Scent Wardrobe

Your closet holds a mix of basics and standouts; your olfactory inventory should be equally diverse

Vetiver Babylon Giorgio Armani

Vetiver (and Indian grass) is green and lemony. It makes this unisex from Armani's Prive collection less ferocious than the 1959 men's-only version; subtle, clean, it's the navy suit of the group.

Happy for Men Clinique

This is like a basic blue oxford that turns out to be a cool twist on the traditional business shirt. it smells like citrus mixed with nitrous oxide - or mandarin oranges grown on Mars.

Light Blue for Women Dolce & Gabbana

That's right - in the "feminine" Light Blue, perfumer Olivier Cresp has created for D&G a perfect scent for guys (sorry, ladies). The combination: Sicilian lemon peel, green apple, and cedar.

Tom Ford Extreme Tom Ford

Here's a "men's" fragrance that's awesome on every level. It's recognizably male without being a cliche - no "soap" or "deodorant" smells - and perfectly spiced and as sleek as a Maserati.

Un Jardin Sur le Nil Hermes

A unisex, this stuff is as far evolved from Drakkar Noir as a Lexus hybrid is from a '63 Beetle: It smells of unripe mango-peel in a cool breeze under a tropical sky. Fragrance doesn't get better.'- Chandler Burr (a well-known perfume critic from NYT)

Yes, to understand a little about perfume concentration, I have lifted an interesting abstract from Wikipedia-

'The concentration by percent/volume of perfume oil is as follows:

Perfume extract (Extrait): 15-40% (IFRA: typical 20%) aromatic compounds

Eau de Parfum (EdP), Parfum de Toilette (PdT): 10-20% (typical ~15%) aromatic compounds. Sometimes listed as "eau de perfume" or "millésime".

Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-15% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds

Eau de Cologne (EdC): Chypre citrus type perfumes with 3-8% (typical ~5%) aromatic compounds

Splash and After shave: 1-3% aromatic compounds'

More concentration of perfume oil simply means stronger perfume strength. So, the most expensive and most concentrated perfume you can buy is the perfume extrait. But bear in mind, not all range have this concentration for sale. But classics (mostly women's range) like Shalimar, Opium, Joy, etc..do have the perfume extrait- normally in small and very expensive size like 7ml or 15ml or even 30ml.

Another thing to bear in mind is that some perfume in the past used the word Cologne loosely. These colognes are quite strong and are often in edt strength.

I think perfume and scent in general is very subjective. It may smell good to you but not to another person.

In Japan, they have a term, 香水臭い. Too much or too strong, it can be stinky.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I understand Japanese men (at least the older generation - 40s and above) generally do not like perfume.

To smell good, or mask BO, I think aftershave, shower gel, or deodorant is good enough.

I dont really like Diamonds for Men. I hope you have good luck in selling this off. :D

Completely agree with this opinion:

FOR ANY TYPE OF PAIN ANY DOCTOR HAVE NO TREATMENT. THEY CAN JUST GIVE U PAIN KILLERES AND THOSE ONLY WORK FOR A PERIOD AND THEN AFTER THAT THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN COME. WITH THE DOCTORS ONLY U CAN BE ADDICT WITH THEIR MEDICINE BUT CANT CURE THIS PROBLEM PERMANENTLY.

THE BEST WAY TO CURE IS A PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIKE ''YOGA'' OR ANY OTHER . YOGA CAN MAKE UR MUSCLES MORE FLEXIBLE AND MORE RELAXED. WITH THE HELP OF YOGA U CAN ADJUST THE GAP BETWEEN UR BONES IN THE NECK. CERVICAL REGION IS SO SENSITIVE IN UR BODY.

SOMETHING TO REMEMBER THAT DONT BEND UR NECK FROWARD, DONT DO SO MUCH SITTING WORK, MOVE UR NECK RIGHT AND LEFT AND UPSIDE TIME BY TIME IS BETTER FOR PAIN.

In any Cause You should use only FDA tested like Lyrica.

Which country's airport is cheaper to purchase Perfume ?

In Singapore, where do you often buy your perfume ? In Changi Airport or in Shopping Mall ? I heard shopping malls always give many promotions + gift.

In my experience, in Asia, it seems Singapore has cheaper price but some colleagues told me Bangkok or Hongkong always have better offer.

Compared to Europe, Singapore is not really cheaper. And against, US is alittle cheaper than Europe.

A little bit confused rite ? :)

E.g : Davidoff Adventure is only 40 US$ in US but in Frankfurt airport, it is 40 Euro. And in Singapore I remember it is 70-80 S$ (dont remember exactly).

I'm shcoked as to wwhy no one bothers to mention < Bvlgari's BLV NOTTE for Men > ?

Its such a popular EDT for the whole world. The koreans love it to the max and it has became their #1 best selling men's EDT for 4 years.

Also, is it safe to buy EDT from the Lucky Plaza shop? can we bargain for a better price? Pls advise. Grateful ~

The New Dolce & Gabbana Series is Number Series is also very nice... I especially like their No 1 as i always No 1... hahaha... Sorry for the lame joke... :P

Guys, I just bought the Bvlgari AQVA Marine yesterday and notice that most Guy's perfume all come in EDT and not EDP. For EDT, I notice that it will not last till end of the day.

Is this normal and any ways to prolong the fragrance?

I also like Issey Miyaki but the female version...its just so nice.

i always find CK perfumes generally light and not lasting while Hugo Boss perfumes generally smell synthetic, metallic.

I think Zino is still in the market but due to its lukewarm public response, it is not sold here. You can still order it on the web from some perfume specialty online shops in the States.

I have not tried this before but reading a few reviews it seems to have a musky 'fecal' note that is common in YSL's Kouros also. Another controversial choice, for some.

you can find it in mustafa now
