Perfume / Cologne / EDT Discussion (Compiled)

Recommended Posts

hmm i only started to use fragrances recently. do not know much about it; just sharing the different scent i have that i bought whenever the smell appeals to me. with the exception of polo ralph lauren blue, the other perfumes i have are kinda different from what everyone else seemed to be using:

1) Frank Olivier - Blue Touch: has a tinge of wood, spice and musk. gives a scent that embodies charisma and masculinity. normally use it for official important functions.

2) Axis - Black Cavier pour homme: tinge of mandain, cardamom, pepper, marine notes; represents fun and enjoyment. smells sexy, elegant, lively and seducing LOL. normally wear it for elegant birthday parties.

3) Davidoff - Champion: tinge of bergamot, lemon, oak moss and cedar. more of a sport fragrance. even the packaging comes in the form of a dumb-bell lol. would normally wear it after shower, post sports / games.

4) Banana Republic - Classic - unisex fragrance with herbal notes, bergamot, clementine. the typical citrus scent. i like it because it isnt too heavy; pretty refreshing and light composition. will normally wear it if my friends ask me out at night for supper suddenly etc.

How long, in general do these last! It supposed to last throughout the day? Because the one I'm using, I don't smell it at end.

A fragrance is like orchestral music and consists of top notes, mid notes and base notes.

Top notes are light, airy, floral, citrusy, such as ylang-ylang, lavender, bergamot and lime. Since Calvin Klein, synthetic top notes evoking the freshness of water, sea, the wind etc. are also used. Mid notes are heavier, spicy or woody, such as cinnamon, cassia and cedar. The base notes are often pungent in themselves but they give the fragrance "body", anchoring it down. Examples are musk and ambergris.

A good fragrance combines all three types so as to seem "full" and should slowly unravel itself throughout the day, shedding first the top notes and then most of the mid notes, but never release just the base notes in themselves. That means the smell slowly changes, which I'm sure you'll notice if you sniff where you put the fragrance every couple of hours. It's meant to do this - not smell the same all the time. And here's where the perfumer's skill is tested because it should smell different but still similar and still smell good throughout.

Perfume is by definition essential oils dissolved in alcohol, which "liberates" the scent since alcohol vaporizes easily. In our hot, humid climate however, alcohol evaporates even more quickly, which means that you get a STRONG burst of scent initially but it goes away quickly, unlike when you wear it say in Europe, where it's much more even release. If you want to smell it throughout the day, use less at one go but 'recharge' once or twice - in general, more often for citrusy/floral scents, than for spicy/woody ones, which linger more strongly.

It's more art than science, how much and how often to 'recharge'. But bear in mind your own nose gets dulled after a while, from smelling the same thing around you all the time. But if people wave their hands in front of their noses or go "aiyoh" when you enter a room, you've probably used too much...

My sensory had changed a little since my last postings. Although, Chanel Allure Homme Sports is still currently my favourite but I resisted from buying it. Presently, I'm lookIing to wear something less common in Singapore. I had tried 2 bottles of Bleu De Chanel but yet still not convinced. Maybe I never like it. I bought the first bottle but the second bottle was a birthday gift. Currently, my favourite is Blvgari Pour Homme Extreme. Fresh light and slight floral, tea and musk. Great for office but it doesn't have staying power. The scent will be gone in 4 hours. Blvgari Pour Homme Extreme is an old scent but yet survived the retail store till now. Next in the experiment stage will be Tom Ford. I am looking to try the Tom Ford Grey Vetiver or Extreme. Tom Ford men's parfum are not cheap and hardly can be found in Singapore. Also, contemplating of wearing the unisex Tom Ford Black Orchid. I will be looking out for Tom Ford in duty free store in airport when I travel next week. Lastly, the award winning Hermes Terre De Hermes is the worst parfum I ever tried. I bought a 100ml bottle and after few squirts and gave it away. This Hermes gave me a nauseating feeling when I wore it. It smell like rancid scent. I couldn't even tolerate it. Yucks ! I had not tried the new scent Davidoff Champion Energy but online reviews were bad. Maybe it may turn out that I buy the Blvgari Man :-) Shopping now ...

Pheromone parfum don't work. I tried before. Basically, pheromone are not proven effective in attracting the opposite sex or same sex. For gay pheromone parfum, the manufacturer simply bottled up pheromone together with a feminine scent in hope that a man wear it to attract other men. Pheromone is odourless. Most gay pheromone parfum has very powdery scent which in fact in my opinion are woman's scent. Don't waste your money ! A totally a no no to buy.

Fierce by Abercrombie & Fitch is like sex.. arghhh.. the smell is just fantastic. I was lured into A & F because of the scent, couldn't resist but to buy one bottle. haha

and if you like Fierce, there is Mont Blanc Legend which is also very close to Fierce.

I tried:

Diesel homme - a strong lasting smell good for night.

Joop Jump - fresh, lemony smell good for work and after sports.

Hugo Bottled Night - good for night use as it is long lasting.

But all time favourite is Issey Miyake Homme - fresh, abit of cirtus, plus musk then give you a refreshinga and energize feelng.

Here are my lists that I have been using and still using:

Calvin Klein CK One (Daily usage)

Davidoff Adventure (nights or drinking session usage)

Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio (Loved this, 4th bottle already, sweat and fragrance mix is excellent, only special occasions)

Chanel Allure Homme Sport (Liked this but get sticky on my skin)

Calvin Klein Crave (5th bottle already, good for travel use, becoz its in plastic bottle and scent lasts long)

Hugo Boss Pure (my last few drops, been saving it for a particular occasion)

Hence I submit my list for Homme Fragrances.

I generally like CK fragrances :D

Just gotten a bottle of CK Shock for myself and one for my guy :)

Also using CK Summer, Clinique Happy, YSL L' Homme and Hugo by Boss for daily (rotation basis)

But my favorite is a special blend we got from Egypt some two years ago - so concentrated that I only need to dab a bit...hahah

Am I falling for a bi?

wow, ppl here have very expensive taste with those niche fragrances...

i usually gravitate to those fragrance that have cardamom in it (perhaps it reacts better with my skin?)

my signature scent would be Chanel Platinum Egoiste.

Other frags that i have is JPG Le Male (women love this!), YSL La Nuit D'Homme, Issey Miyake Intense, Kenzo Power, Burberry Sport Ice, Diesel Only The Brave, Bvlgari Black, Lacoste Style in Play, Azzaro Twin Men, CK Crave, Versace Dreamer...
