My kids can't wait to be at Pink Dot this afternoon for a fun family picnic. We're all dressed up in PINK and ready to go. Hope everybody have a great time. See you there!

btw i'm surprised to see some gay guys here feeling scared to come out in pink and celebrate with us. If straight people like us ain't scared to wear pink and show solidarity for everybody's freedom to love, what are you afraid of? Come, bring some pride and courage with you.

I wear pink today to work but I am NOT going down to attend this stupid, retarded event.

I do not need other ppl's approval to accept me or not. I live my own life. They rot or die, none of my business.

Yes LGBTs dun need anybody's approval to exist.

Wear pink everywhere we go today. Straight allies and families join in too.

Let's make a real Singapore-shaped pink dot.  :thumb:

Is it compulsory to wear pink? My partner and I don't have anything pink in our closet. If not, Is there any "sensitive" colours we should avoid wearing?

this comment is almost as ignorant as straights thinking LGBTs are lifestyle choices.

the idea of the event, from what i see, is to promote and make aware of different realities that straights and LGBTs are living in.  while as an individual you certainly need not obtain "approval" for how you live your life, the reality in singapore is that the LGBT community as a whole is not getting the "acceptance" that it very much deserves.  i, for one, truly believe that the Singapore community as a whole has been a hell lot more accepting of homosexuals from 5 years ago than the government would have us believe.  and that, is in no small part due to the efforts that everyone puts in to bring awareness to the LGBT issues, including this event that you're calling stupid and retarded. so while you may not realize you're actually reaping the fruits of others' labors, trust me, you are.  so even if you're not one who would take part in this voluntary event because in your view, apparently it's just a bunch of losers going there to seek permissions from the straights, the most decent thing you could've done is just to keep quite instead of using derogatory words to describe the event.

grow up.

A condemnation from within the circle!!

If don't want to go, just don't go. If got nothing nice to say, just smile.

It's effortless.

LGBT is a diverse community. We have to accept some differences in opinion.

However we prefer everyone to express it cordially. Engage, instead of using strong adjectives.

Pinkdot organiser announced that there were 26K people at PinkDot2014.

This is 23% increase compared to last year even in the face of immense pressure from certain groups.

Singapore's Pink Dot gay rights rally draws thousands amid 'unprecedented' discrimination

By Yahoo! Singapore | Yahoo Newsroom

Amid opposition from some religious conservatives, thousands of people turned up at Hong Lim Park on Saturday for the annual Pink Dot event supporting Singapore’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Organisers estimated that 26,000 people were at the park during the height of the event at 8pm, surpassing the record 21,000 set last year and despite what they called “overwhelming” negativity towards the gathering, which celebrates the “freedom to love”.

Earlier this month, a Muslim teacher launched a “Wear White” campaign on Facebook to remind Muslims not to participate in the event.

The campaign also encourages supporters to wear white when attending tarawih prayers which begins on the eve of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, taking place on the same evening as Pink Dot's event. Meanwhile, it is also typical of Muslims in Singapore to wear white when attending prayers at the mosque.

However, when Yahoo Singapore approached some of those attending tarawih at Sultan Mosque in the Kampong Glam district, several were unaware of such a campaign.

"I don't know about any wear white campaign protesting against Pink Dot...I don't know about any anti-gay campaign, I came here to pray," said a 23-year-old man known as Azmi, who was on his way to prayers.

The campaign also drew support from conservative Christians led by Faith Community Baptish Church senior pastor Lawrence Khong, who staunchly opposes the repeal of Section 377A which criminalizes sex between men.

For the first time since the event began in 2009, organizers engaged security personnel for crowd control and to prepare for any unruly behaviour.

Organizers also introduced a “community voices” segment in the rally to feature six speakers, including "sticker lady" Samantha Lo and human rights lawyer M Ravi, prominent blogger Benjamin Lee, university student Melissa Tsang, a transgender woman, Fanny Ler, with husband, Zack Ling.

In his speech, Ravi said that in challenging Section 377A “we are fighting for fundamental equal rights”.

Lo, meanwhile, talked about her experiences dealing with discrimination in Singapore society. “I worked twice as hard to prove that a lesbian female can contribute to society,” she said.

In a press briefing before the start of the event at 5pm, Pink Dot spokesperson Paerin Choa said that the extent of discrimination against the LGBT community has been “unprecedented” this year.

"We saw that the online comments made towards us were very brazen this year and that the extend of the negativity was quite overwhelming," said Choa, reiterating that the team wants to "cure the stereotype" on "gay people". On the flipside, Choa also noted that the wear white campaign had helped to gain more awareness on Pink Dot.

However, he said that organizers were open to having a dialogue with Khong, who has asked his followers to wear white specially for a worship service at Suntec Convention Centre on Sunday to make a "statement".

"We are getting through to Mr Khong through another fellow pastor. At this moment, we are trying to find a suitable avenue to get in touch with the 'wear white' people. We have not had any contact made with them as of yet," said Choa.

The Pink Dot gathering has been growing rapidly over the years, drawing a record 21,000 people last year from 2,500 in its inaugural year.

Trust me. I didn't notice any group of people wearing white colors in the MRT, many people wear different shades of color.  . Which means, people don't bother to wear white on Saturday to deliberately oppose the LGBT.  However, I did notice an old uncle wearing white and was sitting alone in the MRT. He was staring at me, than when I stare back, he closed his eyes.  He looked  very  unhappiy, his cheeck sunked to the bone bone, his chin lengthened and became sharp, and his eyes were dark. Not the type that would easily give up seat to the needy. His pale dark cloud freaked me out! When I reached pinkdot, it all became very different. I felt the warmth coming to greet me at Clark Quay. It was a sea of Pink and I told myself - I am finally HOME to my "family".

Seeing is believing, never trust what Shit Times report,.The survey about 78% people unsupportive of LGBT has been crushed at the scene today.  I hope they do an honest reporting tomorrow (if they dare) about the crowd size.  If not, the social media will be doing it to presurrize msm to report the truth.

If not for the tree blocking the light. I believe everywhere is pink. Not a sea of Pink but an ocean of it.  We definitely need a bigger space next year.  I also believe a large part of GLBT couldn't attend due to work shift as many of them worked in retail or F & B industry.  So, ya, we have lots of support everywhere.

BW gathering for Pink Dot 2014 has successfully concluded! Thanks to everyone who joined us, and to xLeviathan for those yummy pink cupcakes!

We started off by visiting the community tents and various booths before finding a nice shaded spot right below the stage where the fans are blowing. :thumb: We then got seated and played some icebreaker games while waiting for the event to start.

The concert started immediately after the speeches by various speakers including M Ravi among others. After more performance at sunset it was time to form up for the Pink Dot. It was then I started to really notice how packed the entire park was compared to previous years. Later it was announced that this year's Pink Dot saw a record number of 26,000 attendees.

After the formation, we went to a nearby hawker center for makan before concluding the gathering. I hope everyone who came enjoyed themselves as much as I did. To those who are going for the after-party, safe sex please. ;)

Some of my favorite moments has to be:

  • The national anthem sung by the Singapore Men's Chorus which coincided with the flypast of the national flag by the RSAF's chinook.
  • The memorable Hokkien performance by Broadway Beng.
  • Sing-along of the song 'Tell me something good' performed by the band Ugly in the Morning.

What's your favorite Pink Dot moment?

TV news already (briefly) reported 26000 people turned up. And they showed the light-up too.

I think thousands more would have turned up if not for the NDP rehearsal and performances at Sports Hub.

:(

1. Digress slightly to talk about this 78%, as the media will likely be referring to it when talking about Gay in Singapore.

2. In 2014, IPS (Institute of Public Study) did a study about Singaporean attitude towards various social issues.

i. 78.2% said sex between 2 adults of same sex is wrong.  (This is the 78% the media referring to)

ii. 80.3% said sex with a person other than your marriage partner is wrong

iii. 72.7% said Pregnancy outside of Marriage is wrong

iv. 69.3% said Gambling is wrong

etc. (See the attached table below)

3. Notice a high percentage of Singaporeans thought those above activities were Wrong,

But NONE of the the above activities are criminalised except gay sex (under section 377A).

4. Also notice 78% just say they think gay sex is wrong.

Do NOT read it to imply that they want gay sex to be make ILLEGAL.

Thinking it is Wrong and wanting it to be make ILLEGAL is very different.

5. We do NOT hear the media add the line 69.3% think gambling is wrong when they refer to the casinos.

But this number 78% is used to defend why gay sex must be illegal.

The above table is from Table 10.5 / Page 49 of the IPS study paper. http://lkyspp.nus.edu.sg/ips/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/06/WorkingPaper21_180614_V4.pdf
