Q HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TIME WHEN YOU WERE NOT FIT AND FAB?

I have always been active. I started swimming when I was four and played water polo in the school teams in Raffles Institution and Anglo-Chinese Junior College.

In university, I picked up boxing and have never looked back since.

  • ABEL MARCUS KOH MUN LEONG

    Age: 31

    Height: 1.81m

    Weight: 78 kg

Mr Koh says there is nobody better than his girlfriend Nerissa Assudani as his exercise buddy.

But at the start, they did not have the same mindset. He was always raring to go, while she found working out a chore. She also preferred cardio-intensive exercises, while he enjoyed strength training. When they finally found an exercise they both loved - boxing - they became business partners. Last year, they tried out boutique gyms in New York and London and found that they both enjoyed boxing-inspired fitness classes for groups.

"We loved that the classes were a mix of high-intensity interval training, strength training and cardio," he said. "It was also fun since they were conducted in studios that felt more like nightclubs."

They decided to bring the concept to Singapore and opened Box Office Fitness gym in North Canal Road in February. About 400 people have since tried their classes, which are conducted in a dimly lit studio with pulsating music and water-filled punching bags. Both of them are qualified fitness trainers and teach at their gym.

Sunday Times Hot Bod (29 April 2018)

David Toh, 24

Undergraduate

BGQZNWw.jpg

Height: 1.85m

Weight: 75kg

Exercise Regimen: Before national service, I weighted close to 100kg. One day, I decided I was tired of being fat, and began an intense journey of exercise and heavy dieting. I lost almost 30 kg. Now, I exercise four to five times a week. My routine consists of a 3-5km run followed by static exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, squats and curls and various core exercises. Going to a gym is preferable, but I do not always have access to one. Thankfully, I have a pull-up bar and dumb-bells at home to facilitate my training. Sometimes I forgo the run, especially if I'm short on time.

Diet: I pretty much eat whatever I want, although I do skimp on carbs when I can. Fortunately, I'm not a big snacker nor do I appreciate sweet drinks. Occasionally, if I feel like I've been getting soft around the edges I go on a "cleanse" for a few days and restrict myself to 600kcal per day until I'm back in shape.

Sunday Times Hot Bod (27 May 2018)

Kevin Lee, 25

Professional MMA fighter

4l6s0F3.jpg

Height: 1.75m

Weight: 84kg (competes at 70kg)

Exercise Regimen: Outside of my training camp, I train between four and six times a week, but I never lift weights. I do a lot of plyometrics (also known as jump training), a lot of stretching, I've incorporated hot yoga, I've incorporated dancing too... Some ballet, some hip hop, Latin, salsa. During my eight-week training camp, I train 90 minutes twice a day, six days a week. I spar once a week, and in the middle of the week, I have an active rest day, where I take things a bit lighter.

Diet: Outside camp, I'm pretty lenient. I get most of my carbs in before 2pm, usually cereal in the morning. Then it's all about balancing. I'll have a beer or two, chicken, rice but I make sure I don't have fried food. I also don't consume sugar after 5pm, because sugar is what makes your body feel lethargic. In camp, I cut out sugar and have lot of protein and healthy fats. But I do have some carbs, either sweet potato or brown rice, just before I train, for the energy.

He's stopped lifting weights but ballet's among his moves

For those of you who think mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are only beefy meatheads who pump iron every day to build muscle so they can hit harder, think again.

After all, American MMA fighter Kevin Lee - one of the hottest young stars in the Ultimate Fighting Championship - has sworn off lifting weights,

"I never lift weights any more, I haven't lifted weights since college," the 25-year-old told The Sunday Times in an interview at Siloso Beach earlier this week.

"I feel doing weights slows you down, and clogs up your joints."

One of the secrets behind his six-pack abs and solid, think physique, said Lee, was ballet dancing.

Yes, you read right, ballet.

With a sheepish grin, he said: "I do a lot of plyometrics, a lot of stretching, I've incorporated hot yoga, I've incorporated dancing too... Some ballet, some hip hop, Latin, salsa. Basically, anything that gets me to move and sweat."

Agility and flexibility is a huge ideal for Lee, whose profession sees him locked inside a cage with another fighter for three or five five-minute rounds.

A search on YouTube for his open workouts before fights will show you some unconventional stretching techniques, as well as plyometric and calisthenic exercises.

UFC usually holds open workouts days before a fight, as part of its promotional push for the event.

Lee competes in the lightweight (uner 70kg) division, and has a fight record of 17 wins and three losses. Last October, he fought for the UFC title but, struck down by a staph (bacterial) infection, he lost to compatriot Tony Ferguson.

He is the UFC's fifth-ranked lightweight, and the youngest in its top 10. It may come as a surprise that his normal weight when not fighting or preparing for a fight is 84kg.

Before fights, he embarks on an eight-week weight cut which will see him shed about 700g each week. This means he weighs close to 79kg in the days leading up to a fight. The final "push" is to drop almost 9kg in 16 hours, right before the weigh-in.

"That's all water weight, and it's easy to cut water from your body," said Lee.

He does it by sitting in a hot bath of about 40 deg C for 15-20 minutes each time, for 16 hours. "It's pretty much like you're cooking yourself," he said with a chuckle.

MMA fighters use various techniques, such as wearing plastic or thick clothing while doing intensive exercises, going into a sauna, or even turning to diuretics or laxatives to clear extra waste from inside their bodies.

It helps Lee that his intensive training routine also burns a lot of water and fat from his body.

In camp, he trains for 90 minutes twice a day, six days a week, with one active rest day - when he trains at a lighter load - and one hard sparring day. Outside of it, he trains four to six times, doing anything from grappling practice to ballet.

His in-camp diet is rich in protein; eggs and yogurt in the morning, protein shake after training, and beef, chicken or lamb for dinner.

He is allergic to seafood, which he says most dieticians he has spoken to recommend for a fighter's diet.

"Outside of camp, I'm pretty lenient," he said. "I get most of my carbs in before 2pm, usually cereal in the morning. Then it's all about balancing."

Height: 1.72m

Weight: 66kg

Exercise Regimen: I train every day except on Friday. I hit the gym from Monday to Thursday, about 1.5 hours each time doing strength training, following the push/pull muscle group routine. My cardio training is mostly on weekends, with dragonboat training and Crossfit, at least two hours each time.

Diet: Weekdays are my strict diet days, when I avoid fried foods and have only salads and proteins. Weekends are my cheat days. My weakness is Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Therapy, but I am still careful with fried food and heavy carbohydrates.

Teo Tze Kwang, 41

Freelance tutor

rOrlQHC.jpg

Height: 1.83m

Weight: 72kg

Exercise Regimen: I work out at the gym at least three times a week, and as part of rehab from an injury, I make sure to incorporate stretching and foam rolling into each session. I used to play badminton and water polo, and also swam competitively at school level. I also enjoy playing touch rugby at recreational level but I have had to curtail most of these because of injury.

Diet: I usually eat lean meat with lots of vegetables and some starchy carbohydrates. I make sure that my nutrition is based on essential micronutrients, protein, essential fats, but no excess carbs. I avoid anything deep-fried or sugary, and I do not consume any alcohol. I have too many favourite foods - nasi briyani, Cantonese-style roast meats, steak, mutton soup.
