Singapore #Fitspo of the Week: Gordon Lim (20 Mar 2023)

Gordon Lim works as a physiotherapist.

Name: Gordon Lim (@gordonlwx)

Age: 29

Height: 1.65m

Weight: 54kg

Occupation: Physiotherapist

Status: Attached

Food: I eat anything these days. Given my work schedule on most days, I try to get food that is the most convenient (ie. least waiting time). I also do have desserts regularly as I have a sweet tooth.

Exercise: My main form of exercise is running long distances. I run anything between 70km and 110km a week, depending on the training schedule that my coach provides. A week usually consists of two interval sessions as well.

What sports did you do growing up?

I played a lot of badminton and basketball in primary and secondary school. I only started running more when I went to junior college.

When did you start running more competitively?

I started to become a lot more competitive after my first marathon in Singapore back in 2013. It was after I realised that my training back then, though unguided, was sufficient for me to achieve above average running results.

You represented Singapore in the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games in 2019. Did you ever expect to be representing Singapore in the SEA Games?

No, I did not expect myself to do that actually. The possibility of doing so only came to mind after running the Sunshine Coast Marathon back in 2019 where I clocked my personal best timing in the marathon. After that, I was nominated to participate in the men’s marathon at the SEA Games 2019, which still remains the biggest highlight of my running achievements.

Briefly describe the SEA Games journey.

It was amazing to be able to represent the country at the start line. I went into the race knowing that I never stood a chance on the podium so it was just trying to make sure I do not end up looking too embarrassed.

My training for the race was filled with decisions that I did not expect myself to make, such as getting Soh Rui Yong as my running mentor and also having friends to do workouts on the track with. Prior to training for the SEA Games 2019, I hated doing interval training. Now, I continue doing interval training twice a week as I find that it helps me get faster and stronger.

What are some of the highs and lows of your running journey?

The highs would be meeting a lot of like-minded individuals who share the same love for the sport, representing Singapore at the SEA Games and also becoming an ambassador for New Balance.

The lows would probably be the fact that I do not have much of a social life outside of running, as I don’t hang out late at night to ensure that I get sufficient sleep and rest for recovery.

How does your work as a physiotherapist help your running?

It helps me to go through the injury process with a lot more confidence. Three key things I always remind myself and my clients who are training hard and would like to mitigate injuries are:

  1. Gradually increasing the training load of the running programme. That could mean increasing the volume and intensity gradually. Too much, too soon might not always be the best.

  2. Always maximise nutrition and sleep especially when you are training harder to allow muscles to recover in order to mitigate injuries.

  3. Try to be patient when going through an injury. Most injuries have a favourable natural history of recovery and sometimes we need to allow ourselves to bring down the training load for a few weeks before ramping it up again.

When you were younger, did you experience any incidents that made you feel insecure about yourself?

I definitely felt insecure when I was younger. I was above average in weight and size back in primary school. But like all teenagers, I was conscious about my appearance and I exercised so much that I was severely underweight. It made me unhappy and affected my social life tremendously.

When did you feel the least confident about yourself?

I believe I felt the least confident when I was in primary school. That was because I was a little overweight back then and was teased by my peers for being in the TAF Club. That made me feel lousy and embarrassed.

When did you struggle the most with your body?

For a long time; perhaps through my teens to my early 20s. I was very much influenced by fitness magazines to obtain a certain desired physique. I was young then and did not know how to go about it, apart from restricting my food intake and exercising intensively.

I think I only realised I was down the wrong path many years after, when I was too drained to be counting the calories and working out on a deficit. I started eating whatever I wanted then, while working out regularly (but not in an intense manner) and I still managed to keep my weight stable. I also sought help from healthcare professionals who gave me appropriate advice.

Are you satisfied with your body now?

Right now, I wouldn't say I am but I do not really care either. I have changed my focus on looking good to feeling strong. As a result of that, I think when it comes to running, I have definitely improved a lot with less attention to my physique.

Have you ever received any comments about your body?

Not really. I honestly think no one cares as much as myself so I try to remind myself that no one is actually keeping track so I can do whatever I want with it. But… I would change my height if I could just to be taller.

Singapore #Fitspo of the Week: Kingsley Tay (3 Apr 2023)

Kingsley Tay is a volleyball and strength/conditioning coach.

Kingsley Tay is a volleyball and strength/conditioning coach. (PHOTO: Cheryl Tay)

Name: Kingsley Tay (@kingsleytzh)

Age: 29

Height: 1.93m

Weight: 86kg

Occupation: Volleyball and Strength & Conditioning Coach

Status: Married

Food: I'm all about balance when it comes to my diet – I don't restrict myself, but instead, indulge in moderation. However, my biggest challenge is making sure I eat enough throughout the day, which is why I make it a point to have something to eat every three to five hours. When it comes to my guilty pleasure though, I have to admit I'm head over heels for bubble tea. There's just something about those irresistible, chewy bubbles that keep me coming back for more.

Exercise: My weekly fitness routine is focused on optimising my beach volleyball performance. With three to four rigorous beach volleyball sessions each week and three targeted strength training sessions, I'm taking my game to new heights. Whether I'm spiking the ball on the sand or pushing myself to the limit in the gym, I'm fully committed to achieving my fitness goals and dominating on the court.

Q: When you were younger, were you already active in sports?

A: I've always been an active kid and engaged in various sports such as badminton, table tennis, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and swimming. I even represented my primary school in hockey and soccer competitions at the zonal and national levels. My love for team sports and the thrill of competition has stayed with me throughout the years, and I'm always up for a new challenge.

How did you get into volleyball?

I owe my love for volleyball to my eldest sister, who introduced me to the sport in primary school. She learned it in her own secondary school and eagerly taught my siblings and me how to play, making it a fun bonding activity for us. Those memories of playing together every other day are some of the most treasured moments of my childhood, and I'm grateful to my sister for passing on her knowledge and love of the sport to me.

You've represented Singapore at the SEA Games three times (with the fourth time coming up!).

It's always an honour to represent my country in competition, but I haven't yet achieved my goal of winning the first beach volleyball medal for Singapore. I've been through many transitions in my journey, juggling training as a student-athlete and as a national serviceman. However, the current phase is the toughest for me as I juggle work and training.

Unfortunately, I had to forego multiple preparatory competitions leading up to the SEA Games. Despite these challenges, I've learned to practise acceptance and make the best out of every opportunity, and this phase will be no different.

Any other volleyball career highlights?

In the 2019 SEA Games, my partner Mark Shen and I came close to winning a medal, but we placed fourth after losing to the Philippines in the placement match. After that year, Mark took a break from playing but has recently rejoined the team. Since then, we've been training intensely, and we're hopeful that we can achieve even greater success in the future.

How does it feel being a national athlete?

Being a national athlete is an incredible journey of passion and sacrifice. The highs are representing your country with pride, competing against the world's best athletes, and receiving recognition and support.

However, the challenges include balancing intense training and competition with personal and professional commitments, managing pressure, and the risk of injury. It takes discipline and dedication to succeed at an elite level, but the experience is a rare and thrilling one.

How long more do you intend to compete for?

To be very honest, I'm not exactly sure how much longer I intend to compete. I will continue to commit to it for as long as circumstances allow and let nature take its course.

Why did you decide to pursue coaching as a career?

I decided to pursue coaching as a career because it allows me to interact with people and seeing someone improve gives me a great sense of satisfaction. I have experienced this since my freelance coaching days in university and the dynamic coaching environment challenges me to find the most optimal ways to help my players improve.

This is further exemplified by my founding of Revollve Volleyball Academy two years ago with two other partners, which provides both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball coaching.

When did you feel the least confident about yourself?

During my primary school years, I struggled academically and felt insecure about myself. But sports provided a refuge, helping me build confidence and resilience. With the unwavering support of my parents and great teachers and coaches, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance.

Looking back, I'm grateful for these challenges as they taught me invaluable life lessons and shaped the person I am today – someone who refuses to let setbacks define them and is always eager to tackle life's next challenge.

Kingsley feels that his life challenges serve as invaluable lessons and shaped the person he is today.

Did you ever struggle with your body?

Ah, the growth spurt phase – a time of wonder, awkwardness and endless hunger. For me, this period was especially challenging, as I struggled with my weight and body image. As a skinny kid shooting up 10 to 12cm every year, I felt like a walking skeleton.

My shoulder bones protruded from my skin and my school uniform hung on me like a sack. I couldn't even do one proper push-up – I had to resort to inclined push-ups on the staircase handle just to get a decent workout. But despite these challenges, I persevered.

With determination and discipline, I made sure I ate consistent meals (every four hours) and if I can't due to academic schedule constraints, I will eat two bowls of rice with fave dishes at the mixed vegetable rice stall. Gradually, I was able to put on muscle mass and my confidence soared.

Looking back, I'm grateful for this experience, as it taught me the value of hard work, patience and self-acceptance. It also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the human body and its incredible potential.

Are you satisfied with your body now?

I prioritise performance over looks when it comes to my body. As an athlete, what matters to me most is being able to perform at my best, regardless of how my body looks. Of course, it's a nice bonus if my physique looks good too, but that's not my main focus.

Fortunately, beach volleyball is a sport that involves a lot of interval training and cardio, which helps me stay lean and in shape. Additionally, I have a high metabolism and when I ramp up the intensity and frequency of my training closer to competition, I tend to lose even more weight.

But don't get me wrong – I still take care of my body and prioritise my health and well-being. I eat a balanced diet and make sure to get enough rest and recovery. At the end of the day, my body is my tool for achieving my goals, and I'm grateful for its resilience and adaptability.

It's important to remember that our bodies come in all shapes and sizes. While it's natural to have certain insecurities or desires to change certain aspects of our appearance, it's important to practise self-acceptance and embrace our unique qualities. A healthy body and mind are far more valuable than any physical attribute or perceived flaw. Let's focus on taking care of ourselves and living our best lives.

Singapore #Fitspo of the Week: Maxi Lim (17 Apr 2023)

Maxi Lim is an actor.

Maxi Lim is an actor. (PHOTO: Cheryl Tay)

Name: Maxi Lim (@originalmaxi)

Age: 36

Height: 1.69m

Weight: 60kg

Occupation: Actor

Status: Married

Food: Ketogenic diet or calorie-deficit diet when preparing for a fight.

Exercise: In a week, I do two sessions of boxing sparring, two boxing technique clinics, three strength and conditioning sessions, and two to four runs.

Q: Were you active as a child?

A: No, haha... I was totally inactive when I was younger. I wasn’t engaged in any sports or any physical hobbies until I reached 15 when I discovered martial arts.

Maxi picked up martial arts after being bullied in school.

How did you get into martial arts?

I was often bullied when I was younger. I had to fight every week when I was picked on by bullies which were often older and physically larger. I knew I had to learn how to protect myself.

On my daily journey to school, I saw one of these roadside banners promoting this class at a neighbourhood community centre. It was a form of traditional martial arts combining many different martial arts styles. Eventually I joined and the bullying also ceased when they knew I could protect myself.

What are some of the highlights of your martial arts journey?

I can say I am one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts (MMA) in Singapore. My very first fight was a professional MMA match in King of the Cage, where the referee for my fight was Herb Dean, a legendary reference from Ultimate Fighting Championship.

You've also competed in Muay Thai before.

Yes! A series of successful weight loss attempts back in 2017 fuelled me to start competing again. I have competed twice at two Evolve MMA Muay Thai events. The results were a draw and a win.

There was supposed to be a third fight where I was to represent Evolve against another gym but I had to pull out due to injury.

What's next?

I guess everything happens for a reason. During the lockdown, training in the gym or anywhere indoors was hard. During that time, I wanted to try something new and challenging, so I picked up skipping and tried to imitate how Floyd Mayweather or Mike Tyson would skip.

Maxi will be fighting in the co-main event at White Collar Boxing Show 6 at Marquee on 27 April.

Eventually, skipping led me to start boxing and I picked it back up in December 2022. Boxing has been really fun and challenging for the past five months.

Initially it was really tough and I couldn't hit anyone with my prior Muay Thai hand striking skills. But I have grown and improved a lot since and will be fighting in the co-main event of The Ring’s White Collar Boxing Show 6 to be held at Marquee on 27 April. Evolve MMA is handling my boxing training and Star Fitness is helping me with my strength and conditioning.

How do you balance your entertainment career, being a dad and preparing for a major fight?

During this preparation for the fight, I mostly concentrate on smaller jobs such as advertisements, so as to make time for training. I am also running a new Thai restaurant in Bukit Timah.

Believe it or not, I am actually doing this fight for my son Reign. Perhaps he will understand when he is older. Many of us are given stories and photos of our father's glory days when younger, and I want to do the same. I hope that Reign would get to see me competing one day – I strongly feel that is possible so long as I am still willing and able.

Being in the entertainment industry, do you face any pressure to look a certain way or be of a certain size?

I think the entertainment industry has been kind to me. However, it is always far better if you could look the part first in order to be cast.

Has becoming a father changed the way you looked at life?

Being a father is definitely one of the milestones in a man's life. Similar to how National Service help boys grow into men, fatherhood opens up new lessons and opportunities for me to grow.

Being a dad is really all about being a steward of another person for life.

Fatherhood has given Maxi a fresh perspective of life.
Fatherhood has given Maxi a fresh perspective of life. (PHOTO: Cheryl Tay)

Did you ever struggle with your body?

Always! My weight has been on a yo-yo my entire life. The best way to stay in shape is to really live a disciplined life, where I work out as much as possible and be mindful of what I consume.

Are you satisfied with your body now?

I am definitely feeling much better now that I have lost 10kg since last December. I am working on a full-body transformation now, with new body goals I’ve never achieved and I can't wait for what is to come.

From there, I'll be sharing the training, lifestyle changes and struggles to achieve my dream body type.

If you could change anything about yourself, would you?

I believe a strong body is a reflection of a strong mind. I am on my way to change to become the best version of myself.

It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
