Things to take note during the seventh month of Hungry Ghost Festival

 

1. Do not response to someone calling your name if you are walking alone at late night. Yin energy is strong after 11pm.

 

2. Hotels are considered Yin places, together with hospital. If you can avoid visiting them is better.

 

3. Stay away from beaches, places with huge amount of trees

 

4. If you have 6th sense since young, it’s better not to go home late.

 

5. It is not advisable to swim in this month.

 

6. Avoid making major decision in contract signing.

 

7. House renovation is best not to commence in this month.

 

8. Do not pick up anything on the road, such as mattress, coins, money and abandoned stuffs.

 

9. Do not make fun of spirits and it is best to be respectful.

 

10. If you find yourself having a lot of negatives (or suicidal) thoughts for this month, visit the temple/churches and say your prayers often.

 

11. Keep a positive mindset and always do good deeds and accumulate good karma.

 

12. Do not touch the food offerings and apologise if you kick them accidentally

 

13. Do not sleep facing the mirror or anything reflective as it attracts spirits

19 Things to Avoid During the Month of Hungry Ghost Festival

 

1. Do not stay out late in the night because spirit might follow you back.

2. Do not stab your chopsticks on your bowl of rice because it is rude in term of table manners and it also resembles the joss sticks offerings to the dead. It is indirectly cursing your own death and also telling the spirits that it is their bowl of rice.

3. Do not take photo at night because you might capture some other stuff that you don’t wish to see.

4. If your birth fall in the ghost month, avoid celebrating your birthday at night and blowing your cake. It will be better to celebrate during the daytime.

5. Do not open umbrella, especially a red one in the house because wandering ghosts might seek “shelter” under the umbrella.

6. Avoid working late during this month because human are weak in the night, while the spirit are strong and might cause possession.

7. Do not cover your forehead, try to pin up your head as high as possible.

 

8. Do not play games that can attract spirits like ouija board or 碟仙

 

9. Do not wait at a bus stop after midnight, especially after bus service hour.

 

10. Do not use black or dark colour manicure because black nails may lead the spirits to think that you are one of them and may lead you back to hell as well.

 

11. Do not enter cemetery or any abandoned house because you might attract wandering spirit back with you.

 

12. Avoid spitting and blowing your nose in the public or at any tree/plant.

 

13. Don’t lean against the wall because spirit apparently like to stick on walls because they’re cooler, avoid leaning against them during the month.

 

14. Don’t turn your head around if someone pats you on the shoulder – It is believed that the living human have two protective flames, one on each shoulder. If a ghost pats you on the back and you only turn your head, you’ll snuff out that protective flame, thus making you vulnerable. To avoid this, turn the whole body at once instead of just the head.

 

15. Do not kill any insects that come into you house – It is a Chinese belief that insects especially are reincarnation of spirits or visit of your late closed ones.

 

16. Do not commerce your renovation works in the 7th lunar month as it might cause disturbance.

 

17. No buying of cars and property housing – It is believed to bring you bad luck if you make a purchase in this particular month, but it is fine to shop for them first and sign all legal agreements after the month.

 

18. Do not hang your clothes overnight as it easily attract spirit to possess them.

 

19. Do not hold your wedding dinner celebration in this month because it is believed to bring bad luck to the marriage and might even cause disharmony.

Celebrated by Buddhists and Taoists all over Asia, the Ghost Festival is a holiday that is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the Chinese calendar. It is believed that on this day the gates of hell are opened and the dead are allowed to walk the earth in search for food. Therefore, it is very much like Halloween in western civilization, although there is more of a spiritual emphasis placed on this holiday than what the West places on Halloween.

While it is not currently known when the Ghost Festival was created, but it is known that it is rooted in ancient beliefs that are thousands of years old. This festival combines aspects of ancient Chinese folk religion, Buddhism and Taoism principles.

A common practice on this day is the burning of fake paper money – commonly referred to as ‘hell money’ – on people’s doorsteps. This is to provide the ghosts with the money they need for their travels across the Earth. It is also common to see people set out food for these hungry ghosts and performing Chinese operas in public for the entertainment of these entities.

Also during this time, there are many street festivals. Many people also make sure to attend temple activities during this time for protection against the ghosts that may try to cause them harm.

In the Ghost Month, evil spirits reach the peak. According to the legend of scapegoat, children, senior citizens, weak or sensitive people should not go out at night, or they will be attacked by the evil spirits. Also, you should keep away from entering the water, especially sea. In short, you should stay away from risks and supernatural games, especially in the night of Ghost Festival.

Some people often take items to avoid evil spirits with them, such as amulet, prayer beads, coarse salt, glutinous rice, cross and lodestone with particular energy. It is better to believe the function of these items as long as your normal life is not affected. For many people, they can feel at ease regardless of the effect.

Maybe onlly Taoists.  No gate of hell opened on seventh month mentioned in any Buddhist Sutra.

Just out of curiosity: We are assuming that the 7th month is the month that the gates of hell opens up and the ghosts/spirits return to the mortal world. Hence we make the offerings etc. to appease them. Do you think this is a global phenomenal? What about countries that do not acknowledge the 7th month? Are the hell gates closed for that part of the world? or do the ghosts from those parts of the world just have to make do with zero offerings? 

 

Also from the above video demonstrating ways to ward off spirits with hand gestures... if the spirit cannot understand sign language, will the message of "fuck off" be understood? 

 

Just trying to make sense of it with logic. I have always assumed that in matters of life and death, the experiences are universal. Just been having the impression from what I am reading here, there is a difference between angmoh hell and Chinese hell.

This hell gate opens on 7th Month is believed only by a small percentage of chinese taoist population in Malaysia, Singapore and in HK. How can it be a global phenomenon.

Yes, it is a global phenomenal.  People make "offerings" to their big shot to appease them too, and even try to gain promotion.   Those in power cannot be offended.

 

Similarly, if you are born into a family of believer, you became a beleiver by default.  If not, you might have seen one yourself to become a believer. Than again, nobody would believe in you.  

 

So Ya!! I believe the power cannot be offended,  or they will make the hell out of you. Start offerings by being a yes-man, praise them, credit them and join them to get protected. Sounds scary right?

I would say there is a difference between a angmoh businessman and a chinese businessman....a lot of stuff are "created" by chinese so that they can make money out of it and we all knew chinese are very good when it comes to that.

but there still plenty of Chinese Singaporeans of other beliefs (Christian) who practise such "rites" as Hungry ghost or believe in other Chinese traditions like Feng Shui, even very educated people... not only the Taoists

Feng shui is a completely different things, is something that can be explained with logic and common sense, like no cluttering in the house so u dont easily get trip and fall, no mirror in front of your bed so u dont get shocked when u wake up and see another person especially girl with and without makeup...but spiritual thing is more difficult to explain and hence more easy to con those who really believe in it.

Staying for 5 years and nothing happened.  So it's only a rumour that the area is haunted.

Nope, that area is still fetching very high rental because of proximity to sentosa and the city area...as l mention before whole sg is not clean, the more 'dirty' the higher rental, look at sentosa cove, bishan, orchard and upcoming bidadari.

I encounter before... I was drag to the floor in front of the door in the bedok camp... Everyone was sleeping like log... I was also sleepy, I only woke up cos I was at the ground floor... and I didn't felt dragged... As my bed is allocated beside the door... First target to be unexpected.... Blanket and pillows are still on bed... one experience and no more like that...

True, just like Bishan, Bidadari will be snapped up and oversubscribed.  Who care about ghosts nowadays.  In Hong Kong, units with murder and suicide will be snapped up quickly because of lower price.
