It turns out, men who enjoy spicy foods also tend to be more adventurous, according to a study that shows a correlation between high testosterone levels and an appreciation for hot sauce.

The study might also suggest the inclusion of chili peppers into one’s regular diet could boost testosterone levels.

Researchers at France’s University of Grenoble measured testosterone levels of 114 men ages 18 to 44 via saliva samples, according to the Telegraph.

Participants were then given a plate of mashed potatoes and asked if they’d like to add chili sauce.

The men with the higher testosterone used the most sauce.

This wasn’t much of a surprise, said study author Professor Laurent Begue, because the hormone influences men to try new things.

He said,

In this case, it applies to risk-taking in taste. It is also possible that the regular consumption of spicy food contributes to increasing testosterone levels, although so far this has only been demonstrated on rodents.

Therefore, Time reports, the amount of capsaicin — the compound that gives chili peppers their signature kick — a man enjoys, the more likely he is to take risks, dominate social circles and exude sexual prowess.

The study authors explain,

Conversely, low testosterone levels have been associated with lethargy or depressive mood.

Exactly what makes a man enjoy the taste of hot sauce isn’t clear, but these results are likely to influence at least a few eating habits.

Entitled “Some Like It Hot,” the study will be published in US scientific journal, Physiology and Behaviour.

Well I do know for a fact that spicy foods help increase your ability to burn fat a lot more.

Yet the makcik makcik still rolling in the deep despite their food being usually spicy.

Side track a bit, I recommend this sambal belacan. VERY spicy. Just squeeze lime, if needed. Can get from NTUC or Giant. $1.65
