Guest wozzit
The British comedian, writer n actor has announced he is to marry his boyfriend Elliot Spencer. In recent years Fry has become an outspoken advocate against homophobia around the world. Fry is a much loved figure in Europe n has done a huge amount of work in the cause of gay acceptance. Instead of suggesting this might bring some degree of happiness into the life of Fry who not only suffers from depression n bipolar disorder but has twice attempted suicide, most of the comment in the British media has concentrated on the couple's age difference. Fry is 57. Spencer is 27. The UKs largest circulation newspaper headlines the story "Stephen's New Toyboy Fiance". Fry had an earlier relationship which lasted more than 10 years. Its a fact of life today that few pay any attention to straight relationships where there is an age difference of 30 n more. In fact its quite common for a man in his 50s or 60s to divorce his wife n take up with a trophy girlfriend in her 20s. There's even a name given to it - the "Jennifer Syndrome". Older women marrying/dating younger men attract little more than a burst of idle chatter. Demi Moore was 41 when she married 25 yr old Ashton Kucher. Now aged 51 she is dating a 23 yr old. But when an older guy dates a much younger guy everyone zooms in on the age difference - even on gay chat sites (some might say especially on gay chat sites!). When asked about being homosexual, Fry once said "I suppose it all began when I came out of the womb. I looked back up at my mother and thought to myself, 'That's the last time I'm going up one of those'". upshot
mike_amk
I wish Stephen Fry and his partner Elliot all the best. They seem so in love. I've been a diehard fan of Stephen Fry for the longest time, even have the full set of his Jeevs and Wooster Serieson DVD.. long before I even know he was gay!. I've been smitten by his intellect and his persona. Though Elliot may be just 27, but I believe they have found compatibility and a soulmate in each other.I just hope the media leaves them alone enough to have a happy life together. Cheers !! upshot
