Can You Swim?

I put this up after finding out that some of the people I know can't swim at all. And they don't see the need to learn.

I was also a lifeguard previously so I have witnessed several drowning incidents...

Of you are already a proficient swimmer then take the chance to learn Lifesaving skills. Just saying.

If anyone reading this cannot swim but willing to learn I can also teach you - free of charge. Just buy me a coffee or meal for my time. Of course only the basic skills so if you wanna learn backstroke or butterfly then I may not be able to entertain.

It amazes me how some prefer to learn how to drive BEFORE they even can swim... wrong priority? I dunno. Not saying theses skills are related but you know...

Dunnid to teach me cos I'm quite OK in swimming already, but always enjoy company if schedules fit.

U must be an experienced lifeguard. Im currently retaking my bm soon when I train back my clothing tow timing. Been a part time lifeguard before I went ns but was lucky cos Ive been reccomended by my coach to work in a swimming club. The environment is scenic and comfy haha.

Back to topic Im quite proficient in most strokes except for backstroke n butterfly. Will like to ask u is it necessary to tilt your head when doing backstroke to see if theres other swimmers in front? I find it 'gao wei' cos water will enter nose. N butterfly I stopped swimming that after I hurt my back. Realised that you need to have very strong lower back muscles to swim well. Any idea on how to improve my back muscles? Haha thanks yea :)

joshTWjosh, I will PM you and see if we can set a time/ place to swim together.

Lameua, personally I dun like backstroke (because it is quite impractical), and butterfly (because I find that it's just too showy). But I guess we can meet up to swim and exchange notes to improve on the techniques if you are keen.

Drowning can be a terrible way to die. Learn to swim before it is too late.

And if you can swim, please go learn the skill so that you may be able to save someone who is gonna drown.

I think swimming and lifesaving skills are two separate skills.

If you never learnt lifesaving techniques i.e. you learnt it without an instructor, you will end up drowning trying to save the person.

I'm always running after you.

You are my ideal.

You are me.

I think that perhaps I've sent the wrong message and gave the impression that I'm trying to recruit students to teach swimming.

I only wanted to encourage people to take personal responsibility to learn to swim if they can't and to improve themselves if they are a weak swimmer.

In NS the requirement (then) was to swim one lap to the other side of the pool. IMO that is grossly inadequate. Just my 2 cents.

Sadly you are right.

So instead of just one victim, the lifeguard will have 2 casualties to deal with.

Just a matter of confidence. You can do it oredi. Just that you do not know how to execute it well.

I have the same problem as firereaver. I can only do breaststroke.  with Freestyle i hv breathing problem, I will be breathless before 20m and my kick is so weak.

If I do it slowly with breaststroke I can go back and forth with no problem, but usually I will need to get out of the pool by the 6th or 7th lap for toilet call.

That's probably because you are struggling with your strokes? If executed correctly, you should actually feel like gliding along with the water and thus won't get out of breath too soon :)

Be cool, like a breeze...

I basically started this thread to remind some guys here about the urgent need to learn how to swim. Don't fucking drown.

My free lessons only want to help complete non-swimmers to overcome the fear of water / float without assistance / swim AND survive a flood or if they fall accidentally into a body of water at least they won't drown.

Read any news report about drowning? Not a lot it seems. Maybe already too many people died that way it is no longer surprising... get the hint?

Put it this way: If you already have a driving license but still unable to stay afloat more than 3 minutes or swim at least 25m you are basically an idiotic fucktard.

Even among my own pool (pun intended) of friends, I have many who can't swim. And they don't bother to learn how to.

Ok lah. What I actually mean is a stationary bike.

Hope that helps.  ;)

In Star Wars, fear leads to hate, hate leads to anger, anger leads to suffering.

Fear (of water) basically leads to drowning.

70% of earth's surface covered by water. Singapore is an island. I doubt an active avoidance of water body is an effective strategy to begin with.

My bad if I had insulted anyone with my driving license analogy...

I sincerely hope the non swimmers out there to take the effort to learn this critical life preserving skill, and for weak swimmers to better their ability to swim. If you are a good swimmer, see if you want to learn how to save a life.. just in case some driver missed a turn and drove into the deep end of the sea or a swimming pool - just saying. LOL!
