Aiya, how stylist you want your moon cake to look like, or was it the wordings you want different? In hotel, they can afford to custom make them. For ordinary peasant, just made do with traditional mold. It is in the taste, not the look that counts. Besides, such festive only occurred once in a year and no point spending so much. There is one shop along temple street or pagada sstreet selling kitchen, packaging and other accessories to hawkers, foodcourts and hotels. You can check it out there, not sure what the shop name was.

I don't really care about the mould, I care more about the flavour of the mooncake.

My faves:

1. snow skin with pandan filling

2. snow skin with matcha filling

3. charcoal snow skin with ginseng and wolfberry filling

And it's really more worth it to get your mooncakes from JB, it's like 40-50% cheaper than Singapore (even if you buy from City Square during weekends).

I still prefer traditional mooncakes with those brownish skin. The oldies' mixed nuts will alwiz remain one of my favourites (yeah, i'm damn traditional with this one). Pandan and green tea mooncakes nvr fail to get my attention. Seriously dun like those with yolks. ;)

Thanks! U prefer temple street and pagada street around chinatown mrt. But i think the outlook of moon cake and attraction package attract the people first. A lot of places spends a lots of time in the packaging and looks, the taste will standing after that.

Wow! charcoal snow skin with ginseng and wolfberry filling is must quite expensive. it must be very nutritious. But i still prefer self made, it is more heart warming and you can add what u like.

Try this shop, they have got some very nice moulds for mooncakes - http://www.kitchencapers.net/shopstore/mooncake.htm

Thanks, I have went there b4 but quite limited. Most of the nice moulds is been sold out. I bought the moon cake plastic plunger mould but not really know how to use. When you are press the mould too hard or too soft, it will either turned out of shape or print out is poor. it is need some technique to use it ? Manual moulds are such more easier. Take a look again at later date.

Is the model you bought shown in the catalogue?

I find the plunger type quite easy to use after some practice - try to play around with the dough first before making the actual mooncakes

Also, if your dough is too soft or too hard or dry, the result can be quite bad - so you need also to check the dough's consistency.

For making traditional baked mooncakes, the wooden moulds produce better results because the plastic plingers are not strong and rigid enough.

Yes, for the last few years, my bf and me usually spend one weekend to make boxes of both snowskin and baked mooncakes for our friends and relatives.

Because we need dozens of salted eggs for the filling, even made our own salted eggs which is easy to make and is definately chemical free.

If you understand Cantonese, follow this clip for the delicious coconut flavoured snowskin and also watch the mooncake making procedure.

Not really expensive, the charcoal snow skin with ginseng and wolfberry mooncake I bought from City Square in JB was (if I recall correctly) only around RM10 to RM13.50, which is super cheap. And I liked it because the taste was pleasant but not too sweet and cloying, plus the charcoal, wolfberry and ginseng extracts have health properties.

You're right though, mooncake making can be a fruitful process. Wish I could learn...

You mean each piece of snow skin with ginseng and wolfberry mooncake is at RM10 to RM13.50.

Snow Skin Moon Cake is quite easy to learn. Only required basic baking skill. Knowing how mixed the ingredient and make the mold. Lastly, put the molded mooncake inside fridge. Snow skin moon cake is done.

Point taken... but considering the same type of mooncake in Singapore would be like S$13 to S$15, you can understand why RM10 to RM13.50 is cheap! :D

All this talk about mooncake is making me hungry. Nowadays though, I go for uniquely-flavoured mooncakes that aren't too sweet, not too frilly/fancy and have health properties.

I've tasted the first but not the second.

I'm also thinking in particular of mooncakes with powdery matcha filling in a base of paste. Suddenly having a craving for that now hahaha

Maybe you can try Szechuan Court (Fairmont). This year they have the pure white lotus (baked) mooncakes. Apart from that, their white lotus with single yolk also not bad. Another place to try is Raffles Hotel.

I had also tried East Ocean Restaurant (that's for snowskin).. quite good too. I would think maybe their baked ones shouldn't be too bad either.

Go Takashimaya or any of those shopping malls near your place. Am sure alot will set up booth and maybe a few rounds of sampling before you buy is good. :D

Sorry, wrong spelling. It is Sheraton. Full name is Sheraton Towers.

The mooncakes are not from this hotel but rather from the Li Bai Restaurant ( 李白 ) inside this hotel.

Their baked pure white lotus mooncakes are not too sweet and has macadamia nuts inside; fully agree that they are really good.
