I been there last year. Seriously what is good in Kaohsiung? I have plans to visit Kending. is it worth going ? I was thinking since it is October and I have found some information online that it is not recommended to go as the cold winds will be quite strong. No one gets into the water as well.

Kending also not bad, worth going if u nvr go before.

Unless you have some locals showing you around, I found Kaoshiung a bit boring....

Ya. I found Kao Hsiung a little slow as well... It seems that you can only head to Kending.

I am thinking of going there but it seems that the weather is a little hectic. It could be rather cold

Has anyone been to alishan from Chaiyi? I am thinking of laying over hear chaiyi station and go up alishan. any other scenic or things to do in the town of chaiyi?

If u decide to go then becareful of the affected area in Taiwan as news have been reporting a typhoon is attacking. The last attack was in July I think last month. So do take care :)

Taiwan gets hit by around 3-4 typhoons a year, if you're there between Jun and Oct you are taking a chance at it. So far this year it has just been two if I remember correctly (the big one in mid July and the one happening as we speak).

Anyway the typhoon usually does pass rather quickly so it's not too bad. And the winds pre-typhoon really feel quite nice given the summer heat/humidity. The main inconvenience happens when you have a flight scheduled during the hit.

What exactly do you mean by "all the way"?

Kaohsiung is under marketed by the tourism board...

In my previous trip, I met a very hospitable local retired unlce. He hosted my group of 4, driving us around, treated us to both the local fare and hotel buffet...delivering his homemade supper at 12mn after his wife sleeps and even offered to drive us to Tainan (which we declined, already damn paiseh)...

He wanted to get his friends in Tainan to host us actually...

I'm going in oct. what did u do in kao hsiung?

Well it really depends on what you like and expect..

It is the second most-populated city in Taiwan and yes, it has a lot of historical buildings (from the Japanese occupation).

You could join a bus tour (take the subway westwards to the last station before embarking the tour bus).

The cost is only TWD 50 and the guide will provide all the maps and explanation.

Quite worth the 2 hours.

Of course, you could also look at the Stained-Glass at Mei-li-dao Station, go for the Ferris Wheel at one of the shopping centres, go to the KS Jv-dan (Dome) and savour all the street food in the night market.  It may not be as glamorous as Taipei but it does have its small town charm.

Taichung is just stop to Sun-Moon Lake. You may want to join a local tour if you dont want all the fuss.

Please don't waste your 25,000 miles (it's actually 21,250 miles if you book online)... save them for a longer flight with a lower tax.

That's where you notice that SQ is screwing us hard, without lube, in the a$$...

If you do the same redemption ticket on United Airlines, but flying on SQ flights to TPE, it will cost you only 30,000 miles + USD 53 of taxes because the US airlines will not charge you those damn expensive extra....

My take on redemption is that I don't mind using a bit more miles as long as I'm saving on actual hard earned cash. What's the point of redeeming otherwise, if you end up paying more than a ticket with a budget airline?

Yeap. I agree with you exactly.

On another note, how do one actually do a cross redemption with another carrier but fly with SQ?

That's the tricky part... I mean, it's quite straight forward haha. Just cumulate your miles on United's program so that you can redeem using their "fares". Since they are the same alliance, you can redeem your miles on ANA, SQ, Lufthansa etc...

Only SQ doesn't show the other airlines' flights... which is weird... but again, it's SQ, nothing surprises me anymore.

There is a downside to that though, cuz, naturally, staying in Singapore means you will naturally fly SQ more often than UA, which might not give you mileage when booking cheaper fares from SQ (whereas SQ will give you 10% or 50% of those miles flown).

Not sure if I've been clear here haha.

Haha. Alright. It's a little tricky because it means moving miles to another airline partner.

I found out something interesting if which I might as well share.

Redemption booking from SIN to TPE (Round Trip)

Carrier surcharges + Taxes = SGD358.30

Redemption booking from SIN to TPE (Single Trip x 2)

Carrier surcharges + Taxes = SGD189.40 (SIN to TPE)

Carrier surcharges + Taxes = TWD1863.00 / SGD83.44 (TPE to SIN)

Total = SGD272.84

It is cheaper to redeem 2 single trip tickets than a round trip at one go. Number of miles remains the same.

I also switched away from KrisFlyer. My Star FFP is on UA MP. OneWorld's on CX AM. SQ's KF is really shockingly crappy, and even if my company flies me on SQ I can always claim my miles using Mileage Plus.

The 10% redemption for cheap SQ tickets doesn't really affect much though I think, since how much can you actually chalk up when it's only 10%, and you probably don't fly to Europe/US more than once a year on your own accord anyway. And for the 50% redemption on SQ, somehow I've always managed to get something cheaper on CX which also allows me to stop by HK on the way back by paying the HKG taxes. Usually those don't give any miles, but CX tends to treat their frequent flyers (even when flying on non-flex Y class tickets) better than SQ does.

SQ has one of the worst redemption benefits and memberships... Hardly get a free upgrade unlike most of the US airlines... But if u r travelling from Singapore it's most convenient.. I have heard ppl who go with Royal Thai since they r also Star Alliance.

If u're thinking of using sq mileage to redeem other airlines u need to do it on the phone with them since u can't do it online... Meaning u can't enjoy ur online booking discount...

One more thing, the customer service ppl will always advice u to book 2x single trip instead of 1x round trip coz the mileage is the same but if u need to change ur flight for the return trip it's gonna be a pain in the butt if u redeemed the round trip tix.

Thinking of changing away from SQ but it really doesn't make sense if ur base of travel is SG...

Agree. We are kinda stuck. Unfortunately, SQ has the best connections unless you dun mind stopping along the way adding on to your total travel time.

I think I'm going to start a new topic regarding all this, we are going off topic here haha

So, a question for those who have gone for the Taipei pride, what exactly happens? Of course there is the parade, what happens other than that? And why do some people keep returning to partake year after year? Is it the atmosphere, do you get people partying around Ximen thru the weekend?

I think there is the clubbing element as well.

I'm heading to taipei pride this year! My friends and I are doing some research on it right now and we came across that the clubbing over the pride weekends could cost S$30-60 on club entry alone.

Has anyone clubbed there before (preferably during previous taipei prides too)? Any opinions if the clubs would be good and if the money is worth spending?

You should just go to ANIKi. It's not difficult to get there from the Da'an District.

And since you're staying at Da'an, you might want to head to this bar called Park. It's kinda near the SYS and Zhongxiao Dunhua stations, and still is my favourite bar in Taipei.

Thank you

Just got my tickets, coming back on 31Oct! My first time going for the parade, excited... haha.

Still need to hunt for hotels from 29-31Oct, any recommendation around xmd?

Good luck finding cheap accom now aroudn xmd :) maybe some last minute cancellations?

But lots of little private hotels around which are not necessarily bookable online...

AirBnB is an option but how good is it in Taiwan?
