Pokémon Go is introducing new story missions and daily quests

The bare-bones story of Pokémon Go looks like it will get a little more meat. Today, Niantic detailed the next major update for the location-based game, and it will include the introduction of a new concept called “research,” which includes both simple daily tasks as well as actual story missions to take on.

Pokémon GoImage: Niantic.

“Field research” has players getting a list of tasks from pokéstops, which involve simple objectives like catching specific monsters or engaging in battles. The field research tasks have a daily structure to them: players will get a stamp each day they complete a task, and when they reach seven stamps, they’ll earn in-game rewards. In some cases, that will include a rare encounter with one of the game’s legendary pokémon.

More interesting, though, is “special research,” which the developer says involves “story-driven activities that may be requested by Professor Willow himself, and will unfold as the trainer completes more objectives.” The story will be tied to the mythical pokémon Mew, which is also being added to the game.

It’s the biggest update to the game since December when Niantic introduced real-world weather conditions to Pokémon Go. And it comes at a time when the field of location-based AR games is set to grow dramatically. Google recently opened up its Maps platform to game developers, and there are new titles based on everything from Jurassic World to The Walking Dead in the works. Pokémon Go’s next big update, meanwhile, should begin rolling out to players this week.

For those rushing through the special research, the 3rd of 8 requires raiding twice. So you may want to time your raid to after you've completed the 2nd of 8 task, which involves hatching 3 eggs.

Some chatter say can fail in a raid on the first attempt (ie time out), reenter the same raid and it'll count as 2 raids.

Many of my friends playing have gotten the red-warning and "Shadow Banned".

‘POKÉMON GO’ WARNING MESSAGES SHADOWBAN PLAYERS DURING DISCOVERY TASK

BY

Pokémon Go ’s Research update is officially live, and some trainers have found a dirty little secret hiding in the most recent patch. As reported on several subredditsacross the Pokémon community, spofers are being warned or shadowbanned across the board.

The “red warning,” as it is now being called, reads as follows:

“We have detected activity on your account that suggests you or someone is accessing your account using modified client software or unauthorized third-party software that accesses Pokémon Go in violation of our Terms of Service. Please be aware that the use of such software can result in the loss of your account. If you have been using such software, we strongly encourage you to stop. If you have accessed certain unauthorized third-party apps or websites, it is also possible that your account may have been compromised. We recommend that you change your password immediately.”

The only option to continue playing is to tap a message that says “got it.”

As with most Pokémon Go cheating dilemmas, this one is fairly complex in terms of its ramifications. While some offenders say they’ve been able to resume playing Pokémon Go normally after the warning has displayed, others claim that shadowbans are also being doled out. For those not familiar with the term, a shadowban temporarily blinds players from seeing valuable Pokémon in their area. If your town is suddenly filled with Pidgeys and Rattatas that weren’t there before, a shadowban may be in effect.

The punishments may be varied, but the software culprits remain the same. Those who’ve used modified versions of the Pokémon Go application, like Tutu or PokeGo++, seem to me most impacted by the warning message. Both apps are commonly used on jailbroken or rooted devices, and they allow players to control their Pokémon Go trainers using a joystick instead of physically moving. While the developers of these tools have described them as “100 percent safe” from Niantic’s prying eyes in the past, that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.

Ban waves and shadowbans are fairly routine for Pokémon Go and other online mobile games, but this one comes at a critical time for enthusiasts of the popular AR experience. Those who’ve been shadowbanned might not be able to catch a Mew or Shiny Mew through the “Mythical Discovery” Special Research task, although many reports suggest its still catchable. Niantic likely took these measures on purpose to ensure the prized reward is as rare as it should be.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN SHADOWBANNED IN ‘POKÉMON GO’

Whether you’ve been shadowbanned or warned, the best remedy for the problem is to play Pokémon Go normally. Remove all traces of spoofing apps and enjoy the game fairly with the masses. A shadowban is typically lifted over the course of a week, so just sit tight and wait for the punishment to end. Spoof creators will likely find ways around Niantic’s new security measures, but we’ll always be an advocate for enjoying the true experience without cheats or hacks.

Haven't come online for a while.  Nice to see so many still playing.

@Coolbriz you are so lucky!  Other than a pair of mareeps and a single bulbasaur, I've not found ANY other shiny mons.

@Cube3 Chinatown? Woah.  Used to be a blue zone :(   I guess some of the pests from my side may have migrated over...  Form a group to take them down?

I roam Robertson Quay, Tiong Bahru, SGH, Bt Merah and the Vivo areas (mainly for the 3 EX gyms).  So if anyone is keen to join me on weekdays to raid or fight gyms, I'd be happy to have you.  Am Mystic (Blue).  For Comm Day, my bf and sometimes a couple of other trainers will join me to hunt mons.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to Larvitar in June.  :D
