Coins - Symbols of Power & Protection

Coins made of standardized size and weight of a certain metallic material, stamped with identification marks or symbols, have been used throughout the ages as an easy-to-use physical item as a medium of exchange. These coins are generally issued by governments to facilitate trade within their borders. But more than just a tool for trade, coins have been used as symbols of power for the rulers in ancient times. As history has shown, once a new ruler comes into power, he would change the existing coins with new ones of his own design. Was this done with the advice of the soothsayers to further stamp his rule and longevity, or just to improve the ruler’s luck? Well, having a coin in your pocket with your king’s face on it… this will definitely remind both his subjects and foreigners about his rule.

The Chinese have built in the symbol of the power of heaven over earth in their I-Ching coins, with the round shape representing heaven and the square shape representing earth. Central to that meaning is the name of the Emperor stamped on the coin, cementing his claim to being a divine ruler as chosen by the Gods. During the reign of the Emperor, he would also issue special authority coins stamped with symbols giving the mandate to the bearer to carry out the tasks required of him for his country and to keep him safe. This was especially the case when protective amulets were needed for men on the march to battle; they were made in the form of coins, as they were more durable than most other materials and were easy to carry around, and easily mass-produced.

In modern times, we see that most of the monarchs have given way to democracy, and the coins in circulation are used to pay homage to the great leaders of the country, and in some countries, to improve the luck of the country as a whole. One very good example well-known within feng shui circles is Singapore’s use of auspicious symbols on its bank notes and coins to lift it out of economic difficulty in the 1980’s. They placed the image of the auspicious Dragon overlooking the harbor on their SGD50 note; and they used the Pa Kua symbol on the SGD1 coin for protection.

The coins from the European Union (EU) also have some specific symbols designed into them. If you look at the coins today, mainly the Euro 1 and the Euro 2 coin, they contain many symbols, some good and some bad. First of all, as we know, each of the sovereign countries are allowed to mint their own coins, but they need to have a ring with the 12 stars representing the EU and the countries’ side of the coin has to be within the 12 stars. This represents the unity of the countries within the EU. Will this keep the EU together? Here I would like to bring your attention to the Euro 2 coin from Greece minted in 2002, with the image of Europa being kidnapped by the bull. This seems to have a bad connotation, like its wealth being kidnapped, and I do wonder if this has caused Greece’s current financial situation?

When you are on your travels, do take note of the symbols on the coins as some of them can contain protective or auspicious symbols. Find out from the locals about the meanings of the symbols on the coins, and keep the ones that have good meaning. Coins are small and easy to carry; why not have some around if they bring you good luck. So if you can’t get hold of a proper amulet, carry some coins with auspicious symbols to help keep you protected and energized. But do filter out the bad ones; try to keep as little of them as you can!!!

The simple procedures that we are going to share shall help you to boost auspiciousness in your new home. Here’s what to do even before you open the door of your new home for the very first time!

 

Many people are confused with “Door Opening Ceremony”, “Ceremony To Commence Renovation” and “Moving House Ceremony”. What are the differences?

Door Opening: After collecting the keys to your newly purchased house, you’d be excited to check on your house conditions and start making renovation plans. However, there are some pointers to note before you open the door for the every first time! Select an auspicious date and time to open the door along with a simple ‘Door Opening Ceremony’ (refer to following content for instructions). Do not sleep over on the same night.

Commencing Renovation: Prior to moving into your new house, renovation work must be done. Before that, you should conduct the ‘Ceremony To Commence Renovation’. Note that this happens after the ‘Door Opening Ceremony’.

Moving House: Nowadays, most people will select an auspicious date to shift into their new premises, in hopes of all matters to progress smoothly. On the day of moving into your new house, the ‘Moving House Ceremony should not be missed. Prior to this ceremony, all furniture and household items should be arranged in place. You may start staying in your new house thereafter.

 

Door Opening Ceremony: Simple Steps To Receive Good Fortune

1. Select an auspicious date to enter your new home. Knock on the door during the auspicious time before you insert your keys and open the door.

2. When entering the premises, auspicious greetings (i.e. for good health, good fortune, safety and smooth-sailing progress, etc.) should be said out loud.

*Optional* Based on your dialect group, you may roll items that symbolise wealth [(e.g. pineapples known to the Hokkien as Ong Lye) or mandarin oranges (known to Cantonese as Kum)] into your living room while saying auspicious words.

Dos & Don’ts When Moving House!

Selected an auspicious date for moving house? What must you do or watch out for when shifting into your new premises? The Moving House Ceremony comprises the Setting of Altar and Wish-Making Ceremony.

 

Owning a new home is a joyous and important life event. Besides performing the Door Opening Ceremony after you received your keys and selecting an auspicious date for moving house, there are more that you can do to ensure smooth and harmonious living in your new abode. Read on to find out more!

Prior to the Moving House Ceremony (setting altar and making wishes), do be mindful of:

1. All items, except the following, can be shifted into your new premises:

• Used bed and/or mattress
• Used cookware
• Used clothes

2. Avoid cooking or staying overnight at your new house

 

Moving House Ceremony – Procedure for Setting of Altar

**The setting of altar is optional, based on the preference of individual household. Those who do not intend to set up an altar may proceed directly to the procedure for Wish-Making Ceremony.

1. Before the selected date for setting altar, you may bring the god’s statue to your new premises. Regardless of whether it is new or old, the statue needs to be covered by red paper. At the new home entrance, either the owner or one of the family members (ensure that his/her zodiac is not in clash) should walk backwards into the house while carrying the statue. S/he may turn around upon entering the home. The god statue can be placed on the altar but do not remove the red paper.
2. On the day of setting altar, remove the red paper at the recommended timing (advised beforehand) and arrange the incense, candles and ritual offerings on the altar.
3. Burn the incense at the specific time indicated by feng shui master. The sequence for praying begins with: Heavenly Gods, Deities, Earth God, Kitchen God and ancestors.
4. After praying, please proceed to make a wish. Refer to Procedures for Making Wish for more details.

Note: If you are engaging a professional to help with the setting of altar, the ritual may differ according to the person-in-charge. However, the homeowner should pray again based on the advised time by feng shui master, followed by making wishes.

 

Moving House Ceremony – Procedure for Wish-Making Ceremony

1. For WON clients: You and your partner should hold the pre-distributed ancient coins and face the designated direction to make 3 wishes each. You and your partner can make your wishes while facing the main entrance. Individuals may also follow your own religions and practices to pray and make wishes.
2. After making wishes, place the ancient coins as well as some loose change in a money bank at your Wealth Position (How to identify wealth position?) and the ceremony is completed. You may now shift into your new home. (Money bank, ancient coins and loose change should be prepared beforehand)
3. To boost wealth luck, it is recommended to drop some coins into the money bank on a daily basis.
4. When the money bank is full, collect the money and save it in a bank. Return the ancient coin to the money bank and resume saving. There is no need to make wishes again.

Note: It is unadvisable for pregnant women to participate in the Wish-Making Ceremony.

Apartment Therapy: 8 Ways to Think When Designing Small Spaces

Good feng shui space is happy space, so fill your rooms with the things you love. Buy only furniture you cannot resist and everywhere, let there be a display of things that have meaning for you. Your living space should engage your senses. Remember, there can be beauty in imperfection, in things that have history, in symbols that make you think rich, and remind you of aspirations and reflect your personal idea of the good life. Living in high rise apartments is so much a part of modern life now that we need to come to terms with living in small spaces. We can be inspired by a new minimalist thinking, a new attitude towards furnishing that focus on the PEOPLE living in the space rather than on rules of design concepts. We can pare possessions down to essentials but also leave room for things that soothe our soul, touch our creative chord or arouse nostalgia and a memory of some grand moment we do not want to forget.

1Go for design simplicity or no design at all. Think of comfort, the love you share with those who live with you. Dressing up your apartment in a style that is all your own means using only things that bring good vibrations. When your space is limited, you must be scrupulous in making the most of what you have. So bring in only the kind of furniture and decorative items that you absolutely love. Do not clutter up your personal place with stuff that has no meaning for you, or worse, that you know is simply not right.

2Start with the “feeling”. When it comes to designing your apartment, go for a “look” and let your emotions have its way. This is best expressed in your living area, which can be as starkly modern and minimalist as you wish. Do not let small spaces constrain your desire for a truly modern feel. 3Let the colour of your walls be white as this will visually expand your space. White also belongs to the Metal element, which is excellent for warding off the forces of excessive yin. It helps dissolve illness and misfortune energy brought by afflictive stars of the feng shui chart each year. White is also a great colour to provide the backdrop for your furniture and decorative items. It can be your blank canvas upon which to fill with shapes and forms that please you.

 

4HAVE one decorative wall painted in your favourite colour This can be used to create a dominant colour, or as a statement concept that engages your own preferences. Often, one bright red wall can release the inner spirit and bring out your inner warrior. A bright green wall brings in the energy of growth. A mustard-coloured wall emphasizes the presence of Earth energy; it is a very grounding colour, which brings out the practical side of you. And for those wanting to feel the embracing darkness of black, by all means create a black floor or wall or ceiling even. Just remember that black is a strong yin colour, which always works better with the balancing presence of yang white. If black is too strong, use blue instead.

5Let the colour of your walls be white
When space is small, use the air within to engage your sense of smell. It is a powerful way to create a familiarity that impinges onto your inner consciousness. Scents are a powerful way to lift the spirits and bring in a level of relaxed comfort that can be very soothing. Develop a familiar scent that is not too strong or overpowering. Lavender is a good safe scent to work with… let the smells of your home empower you!

6Inside your bedroom, indulge yourself
You can opt for a hotel feel – crisp white sheets, big bed, designer backdrop, carpeted floors. Or you can go for the chintzy, warm feel that cocoons you, like a nesting place of printed sheets and pastel colours. Everything about your bedroom should reflect the journey of your life. It can be a quiet place to withdraw from the world, or it can be a room filled with the music you love, pictures that evoke a smile on your face, favoured possessions, or meaningful gifts from someone you care for. Modern bedrooms are no longer just a place to sleep. For many, the bedroom is also a retreat space, a home office, a relaxation zone or a private library. You can design your bedroom to be all of these things.

7Let your room have at least one window
Hearing morning birds sing these days is a precious luxury. If you live high up in the skies and your window opens to panoramic views of the city, keep your curtains open to make the view available to you when you open your eyes! Your bedroom may have no view at all, or a view that offends you, in which case block it off with curtains. Whatever you do, let it feel right for you at the stage of life you are at. Younger people need more sunlight, while older folk prefer the muted feeling of darker rooms.

8Position your bed to capture a lucky direction
Let your bed be oriented to where it can get the most daylight in the mornings. Natural light is the most auspicious kind of wakeup call, so do go to sleep with curtains open or with only light curtains or with no curtain at all! Dark curtains extend your sleeping time, but you also miss out on the best time of the day, which is the hour of the Dragon… the early morning time.

The Concept of Yin and Yang

All the energies of the earth, which can be regarded as synonymous with the breath of the dragon, the sheng chi, are said to be either Yin or Yang in nature.

All the elements of the earth too are said to have either a Yin essence or a Yang essence. The cosmology of these two opposing yet complementary forces is the conceptual way the Chinese view the universe. Yin and yang have their own attributes and their own magnetic fields of energy. They are diametrically different but they are nevertheless mutually dependent. Each gives existence to the other. One cannot exist without the other.

Thus, when feng shui speaks of balance, what is referred to is the tenuous presence of both types of energy in optimum quantities, relative to each other.

Feng shui does advocate more yang in dwellings of the living and more yin in dwellings of the dead. This means that in our homes and workplaces, there should be lots more yang than yin. However, there should never be so much yang that yin completely disappears. Without yin there can be no yang.

When there is balance between the yin and yang, the wholeness of the universe is represented. There is good balance which then brings prosperity, health, well-being and happiness.

Feng shui practice always include a yin-yang analysis of room space, land configurations, sunlight and shade, dampness and dryness, bright and pale colours, and solids and fluids. Rooms that are too yin are not auspicious. There are insufficient life energies to bring prosperity. Rooms that are too yang are said to be damaging because there is too much energy, causing accidents and huge losses.

The Power of Water

In the element cycle, Water is the only element that is able to tap all our sensory organs from sight, sound, taste and touch. How we introduce this element into our environment would have an effect on how we perceive and appreciate the space. Taking this in mind, the next question we need to ask ourselves is how water can affect our lives. In order to answer that question, we need to first understand the properties of water and its subconscious effect.

TOUCH Creating the Effect of Calm
No other element can describe calmness better than a clean, smooth sheet of water. Even the slightest breeze creates soothing ripples, which brings out an inner sense of peace and serenity. But the introduction of this type of water feature needs to match the function of the space. For example, if we have a courtyard filled with activity, a still water feature may contradict the intended use of the space. Still water should be used for areas that require calm such as a meditation courtyard or sanctuary.

Other enhancers may be introduced through the use of sculptural lights to create a soft glow within the still water to further enhance the effects of peace.

SOUND Multiple Waterfall Effect
To create vibrancy and energy, there is no better method than introducing a multiple-level waterfall effect. Fountains play a vital role in society as there are no better installations able to attract people from all walks of life together into a single space. The key element is how to tap into each individual sensory organ and have it culminate into a single physical object. With sight, fountains tend to encompass an overpowering sculptural effect, and set within a large plaza, it stands out, thereby telling our visual perception that the fountain is the main feature of the space.

With sound, fountains are designed to maximize the cascading effect of water, usually dropping water from substantial heights to create the maximum audible effect achievable without spillage. And finally, the sense of touch, where you will notice in most fountains there is a base pool that collects and recycles water. But it also serves as a means for people to congregate around the space to touch and feel water, so by combining these 3 sensory effects, you will find that the fountain is the ultimate water feature in creating social interaction.

COMBINING ELEMENTS Sculptural Feature
Now that we have identified how water can affect our senses, we need to then look at ways to integrate water with the other elements. Water being the most malleable material will serve to be the most prominent element in the feature. Surveys of consumer preferences in leading automotive markets showed that more than one third (35% - 40%) chose silver (or metallic grey) as the color for their personal vehicles.

This is probably the most inauspicious advice I have come across. I hope this isnt your idea and I would not think its wise to recommend anybody to put two or more phoenix/roost/chicken beside each other regardless of the year we are in.

I will not doubt her for all her pointers and tips for the feng shui.
