Landscape Feng Shui

A Fresh New Way to Decorate Your Home

When it comes to your home, you will always come up with new inventive ways to either change the look, save money or create space. But whatever the reason, the main motive for an “interior design job” is to achieve a different look. So for a minute, let’s move away from the conventional way of decorating the home, and try a few new techniques.

Think of Colours as Tones
Everyone has a different perception of how colours should work, and whether or not you agree will differ from one person to the next. So, rather than looking at colours individually, let’s look at colours as tones, and see how the pairing up of different colours can create an artistic language in itself.

In this example, the first thing you will notice is the use of the colour red along the walls, but while attention is drawn towards the colour, we might miss out on the organization of the kitchen, and the relationship of one area to another. Strip away the colour aspect in the design and you will start to find three basic design elements.

First, the C-shaped counter creates a solid base that unifies the principle of the kitchen by forming a triangular work arrangement between the sink, stove and work counter. Next, the central placement of the stove creates a mirror image along the wall dividing the space into two halves (dry and wet). Finally, the placement of the oven-stack versus the horizontal storage stack helps introduce visual lines to break up the monotony of the kitchen.

When we take away the idea of colours and look instead at tones as a medium of architectural language, we can go deeper into analyzing how a space is designed and how it affects us.

In this next scenario with a black and white concept, by removing the concept of colour and focusing instead on tones, we start to see a different picture. In this case, the lighter-coloured tones are used for the horizontal surfaces, while the black-coloured tones are used for the vertical ones. This makes use of tones to accentuate the difference in planes.

The next element that stands out are the chandeliers, which mirror the plate setting on the island table; these create a link between the foreground and the background.

So when we start to observe a space, try not to get too distracted by colour and instead, start to appreciate the space through the placement of objects within the space, and look at how they relate to one another.

Create a Focal Points
There is no better place in the home to let your guard down than the bathroom, so why not design it to be fun and unique at the same time. Regardless of the size and shape of your bathroom, you can create features within the space to liven it up. Looking at the example here and ask yourself: what is the first thing that strikes you? Probably the elliptical bathtub. But ask yourself if that really is the key feature that makes up the feel of this bathroom. While it may be a central feature, it is definitely not what makes up the bath area.

Look deeper and you will find two key elements that can be integrated into any bathroom. First is the use of lights; playing with ambient lighting using display vignettes and portals gives depth to any room. The next is the use of materials; by creating a seamless wardrobe system in white, it helps balance out the grey effect feature wall on the right to bring about a sense of diversity, rather than a monotonous tile design.

When doing up a room, the key is not to focus attention on a single point, but rather multiple points, in order to heighten the sense of adventure and appreciation for the space.

Have Fun with your Interiors
There is no better way to create a fresh new look than by doing something out of your comfort zone. So once in a while, do something so different that you amaze yourself. Like most of us, we are used to regularity, symmetry and monotony, as it is considered ‘safe’. So let’s push past this comfort zone and see what you can live with.

For example, in this living room, the most obvious breakaway is the play on colours, where the room is split into two, through the use of a blue and brown tone concept. Being quite unorthodox in the use of the colour palette allows the creation of an invisible defining line between the background and the foreground.

The next observation is the use of objects to skew the concept of scale. By introducing two large mirrors on the left, it creates a distorting effect, as the human scale is suddenly distorted, creating this illusionary appeal to the room.

However, despite these design anomalies, the conventional setting of the fireplace, seating arrangement and picture window all help pull these anomalies together into a unique setting that seems to fit quite well. Through the confusion comes a unique setting that creates its own architectural language. Regardless of what comments are received, this space will no doubt reach the same conclusion – that this is a new way to visualize how a home can be decorated.

The next time you start to look at a room or space, look deeper into the basic design intentions, and from there you can start to appreciate how you can design for a higher level of appreciation. Look into the use of tones rather than colours, the use of backdrops and how to work the foreground, and understand that architecture is a language. How you experience any space depends on how creatively you mould that space.

Being Clever About Money

How do you make sure the money you earn does not disappear or get frittered away? How can you see your money grow steadily over the years, accumulating and expanding so you eventually experience a creation of real wealth instead of constantly having to make ends meet? Getting on top of your finances is not difficult but in addition to having good feng shui, you do need to follow smart advice, exercise discipline in the way you organize your cash flow and be alert to investing your surplus money.

Begin your year with a firm resolution to focus unwaveringly on managing your money. Aspire to become rich and start taking control of your finances and do so in a conscious and serious manner. You need to have an attitude of respect towards money that is neither overly emotional nor excessively detached.

If you want to accumulate wealth, you must first establish the right attitude towards money! Understand that it is a tool and you are in control. You must never allow the management of money to overwhelm you. Let it be a natural part of your life, one of the skills you need to develop and absorb into your daily rituals of living so it becomes second nature to you.

Begin by getting a good idea of your current financial situation. Know the kind of budget you live under. Train your mind to think in a quantitative way, putting numbers to all your thoughts and ideas about everything to do with your money situation. You cannot be clever about money until you know the parameters of your financial situation.

Once you know what the overall position of your income and expense sides, you can start to think strategically about your money. This is the start of dreaming dreams and formulating strategies inside your head. Hazy goals eventually become clearer and this starts you on the road towards becoming financially savvy.

Start With Your Saving Potential
You begin by developing the saving habit. Amass some equity! The first goal is to endeavour never to be in the red in terms of cash management. Never allow yourself to run out of cash. Let this be the golden rule by which you live.

From here you will be in a comfortable position to make an estimate of how much you can save. Saving is a magic word in financial management and this requires you to quantify just two numbers; the first is your combined on-hand income; and the second is an accurate estimate of what you need to spend to adequately cover all the needs of your life. Do not forget to set aside a little something for special indulgences and little luxuries. When you undertake a disciplined assessment of your financial situation, you are much better equipped to know if your combined incomes (for couples) are adequate for the both of you. Put another way, it also shows if you are living beyond your means.

An Exercise In Budgeting
Budgeting is the first step in creating the habit of keeping track of your spending. This implies taking control of your money. You need to do this if you want to save and be able to invest. This is how wealth accumulation begins, by first creating some personal equity!

Next you need to extend your time horizon. Look beyond your current situation and see if you can work out how much money will be coming in and how much going out over an extended period of time, for instance 12 months. Include holidays and other anticipated expenditures. This is to see if your lifestyle is costing you in excess of what you earn.

Being clever about money requires you to think beyond conventional logic. To guard against impulse purchases, it is a good idea to pay cash for all major buys. We are usually more careful when we use real cash instead of plastic. Using the credit card especially when you own multiple credit cards makes it harder for you to keep track of your expenditures, so make the effort not to get addicted to your cards. 

When You Have Surplus Money
If your income situation allows you to save, it means your financial position is healthy. 

Once you have a little equity built up, start looking for ways to make your money work for you. Do not be satisfied with merely earning interest from the bank. There are ways of getting a higher return on your money and the way to find out how is to be on the lookout. Start by having a chat with your friendly banker about the different deposit plans they offer.

Buying Your First Property
Your first serious investment should be some kind of landed property. This is a really big deal because wealth creation in your life starts with accumulating assets and the first real asset in anyone’s life is the home they live in.

You will need to amass some equity to buy a house or apartment, at least enough to take advantage of easy house loans being offered by banks these days. If you have a steady job and you have at least a good thirty years more to your working life, you will find banks more than happy to offer you financing that will help you purchase your own home.

If you do not already own the home you are living in, you should definitely consider buying property to live in. Owner-occupied homes are easy to get financing for and in 2008 the earth element (which means property) represents wealth creation. So this is a good year to buy property.

Here’s a tip. Borrow as much of the cost of the house as you can, and go for the longest tenure. This way the equity you need as down payment will be less. I would say that it is not difficult to find banks willing to finance from 70 to 80 percent of house purchase price especially when they are in a “good” location. Remember to put top priority on location. Buy from reputable developers or if you are buying from an individual owner, make sure you invite your banker to give you an assessment of how much the bank values the property at. This is because the loan they will be willing to give you depends on their valuation of the property and not necessarily on the price you pay. As for tenure, it makes sense to stretch out the loan as much as you can so that monthly repayments are easier on you.

You will find that what you have to pay in renting living premises is lower than monthly mortgage payments, so make sure you do your sums to make sure you can afford the repayments. Owning your own house of course holds out the promise of long term capital gain. Your house is sure to worth more than what you pay for it if you think long term. As for the repayments, these become less painful as your earning capacity improves.

Time to Renovate: Creating Change

As time passes, we will always at some point find an itch to want to change and revitalize our surroundings. It is easy to get bored looking at the same interior setting throughout the year. So a little change would add immense value to how we appreciate our living space. It is important to remember that life is a journey, and therefore our aspirations will change over time, as will our perceptions on life.

When we set out to build or renovate our homes, it is best start with the key essential elements such as wiring works, walls and architectural features, which if done later would create an inconvenience to our daily lives. Leave all the frills and thrills for later, depending on your budget and mood. Once you have settled in, you can start to dabble into minor additions to add value, so here are some quick tips to renovate your home.

Making Use of the Outdoors

So a quick and easy tip to change the mood of the room is to introduce a skylight. This simple task would not only create a change but will invite in this holistic light source, thereby instantly transforming how we experience the space. In this scenario, the introduction of natural light would change how we bathe, as the feeling of bathing within a confined space to bathing under the stars and sky are two totally different experiences.

Creating Tones
Another easy task to creating change with your interiors is to play around with the materials. Over time, materials are worn down, so sooner or later, we will be faced with the decision to change our interiors. We can both repaint and spring clean to give the place a breath of fresh air or we can take bolder steps by creating contrast in our lives.

Another type of horse that is good for display is the tribute horse, which the Chinese always associate with gifts given to emperors and other powerful court officials - the tribute horse has been associated with gifts brought by the vanquished to the victors. Thus, if you're involved in a competitive situation, use a painting or sculpture with the tribute horse as the subject to bring you victory luck.

If you cannot find such an image, look for something that shows a precious horse (preferably white) that is being led and not ridden by an official. This symbolizes upward mobility and promotion, and is very auspicious indeed.
 

The horse is best placed in the living and family areas, but never in the bedrooms.
