The stories behind these 14 photographs will make you take a second look. 1. Regina Kay Walters Imgur This photo was taken by serial killer, Robert Ben Rhoades right before he killed the 14-year-old Walters. Rhoades was famous for touring the country in an 18-wheeler truck that was fully equipped with a torture chamber. This photo was taken in an abandoned barn in Illinois where Rhoades murdered Walters. Before killing her, Rhoades cut off her hair and forced her to wear the black dress and heels you see her wearing in the picture. Robert Ben Rhoades was captured in September 1992, but not before taking two more lives. He was sentenced to life without parole and remains imprisoned in Texas to this day. 2) Reynaldo Dagsa’s Assassin What Culture Reynaldo Dagsa, a politician in the Philippines, took a picture of his family right before his assassination on New Years Day 2011. The picture was taken just moments before his assassin, Michael Gonzales, fired twice, killing Dagsa in front of his family. 3) Michael and Sean McQuilken NBC News This electrically charged picture was taken just a few minutes before both brothers were struck by lightning in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the summer of 1975. Lucky for Michael and Sean, both of them survived the lightning strike. 4) The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge Lovers Reuters A photographer snapping a few shots of the thick air pollution around the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge in China accidentally caught two lovers’ suicide on camera. When interviewed about the photo, the photographer said he didn’t even notice the man jumping, then he barely had time to adjust his camera to catch the woman jumping from the bridge a moment later. “I was totally paralyzed – there was no way I could get anywhere near her, I still had my hand on the camera and I tensed and shot off another few frames entirely by accident – but ended up photographing the woman as well,” said the photographer. Neither of lovers’ bodies were ever recovered. 5) Tara Calico and Michael Henley, Jr Imgur This Polaroid was found in the parking lot of a grocery store in Florida. The picture allegedly depicts Tara Calico, a 19-year-old college student, and 9-year-old Michael Henley Jr., both of whom disappeared without a trace near their homes in New Mexico in 1988. Both are still missing. 6) Robert Budd Dwyer Wikipedia Dwyer was a Republican state senator in Pennsylvania from 1971 until 1981. Then from 1981 until January 22, 1987, Dwyer severed as Treasurer of Pennsylvania. On that fateful day, Dwyer called a press conference in the state capital, and then shot himself in front of the gathering of reporters. His suicide was broadcast on live TV across the state. This photo was taken just moments before he killed himself. See the video below (Warning: Uncensored footage): 7) Chris McCandless Imgur This was the last self taken photo by Chris McCandless before his body was found by a hunter in the Alaskan wilderness in 1992. Earlier that year in April, McCandless abandoned his life and ventured into the Alaskan wild with very little food and equipment, hoping to live a simpler life. He died sometime in August 1992. The official cause of death was starvation. McCandless’ story was the inspiration for the book Into The Wild. 8) Saylor Guilliams What Culture ALSO READ 40 Incredibly Rare Historial Photographs You Must See Saylor Guilliams and her friend Brenden Vega were hiking through the wilderness in Santa Barbara County, California. While they were hiking, the path they had chosen was not clearly marked. Both fell and seriously injured themselves. After calling out for help for hours, Vega left Guilliams where he was to go get help. Sadly on his way out of the wilderness, Vega fell again, and later died where he landed. This picture above was taken by three hikers that were in the same area the next day. Unbeknownst to them at that point, the body of Guilliams can be seen in the background of the photo. Her curly red hair is visible if you’re looking for it. These same hikers did eventually find Guilliams and managed to save her life. 9) Robert Landsburg What Culture Lansburg was an avid photographer at the time of his death. He was especially enamored with Washington state’s Mount St. Helens. On May 18, 1980. Landsburg just happen to be right near the base of Mount St. Helens, when the mountain erupted causing the single biggest volcanic event in the United States since 1915. Because of his proximity to the eruption Landsburg did not survive, but he managed to capture this photograph of the beginning of the eruption just before his death. 10) Omayra Sánchez Wikipedia Sánchez was a Colombian girl killed in 1985 by the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. She was just 13-years-old when she died. The eruption caused massive flooding and landslides in the surrounding villages. The photograph was taken by a journalist visiting the afflicted shortly before her death. It won the World Press Photo of the Year for 1985. See the video below: 11) Evelyn Mchale On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note: “He is much better off without me I wouldn’t make a good wife for anybody.” Robert Wiles She then went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building and jumped. In her desperate determination, she leaped clear of the setbacks and hit a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Across the street, photography student Robert Wiles heard an explosive crash. Just four minutes after Evelyn McHale’s death, Wiles got this picture of death’s violence and its composure. Yet, past the riddle of Evelyn McHale’s life and passing, there is the just as significant puzzle of how a solitary photo of a dead lady can feel so rich, and —it must be said—visually beautiful years after it was made. There’s a reason, all things considered, why she is regularly alluded to at this very moment as “the most beautiful suicide”. Along with his two accomplices David Brooks and Elmer Henley, Coril raped, tortured and murdered a minimum of 28 boys between the years of 1970 – 1973. Coril was shot dead by Henley who is currently serving a 600-year sentence in prison for his role in the murders. In 2012 a filmmaker was granted permission to review his personal belongings, which had been dumped in an old school bus. Among them he found a Polaroid of a handcuffed young boy, lying on the floor, Coril’s toolbox of torture implements in the foreground. The stomach-churning image is made even more chilling by the fact that no one knows who the child is, and it may mean there are more victims of The Candyman that the police were unaware of. 13) Gary Stemper The photo was taken by Gary Stemper, of his wife in the foreground. The other two divers pictured are Tina Watson and a rescue diver. Tina and her husband Gabe, an Alabama couple, had chosen Australia for their honeymoon site to do some diving at the Great Barrier Reef. But this was a dive from which Tina would never surface alive. The husband’s story is that strong currents pulled her under, and upon swimming to her after her distress signal Tina knocked his mask loose, and by the time he recovered she was sinking too quickly. He surfaced for help, and also later claimed that an ear issue prevented him from diving deeper to retrieve her and that he hadn’t been properly trained for a situation like that. Conflicting statements by Watson led to an investigation, and Queensland prosecutors suggested that he turned off his wife’s air regulator and bear-hugged her until she lost consciousness, then turned it back on and resurfaced. 14) The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, led by the charismatic leader Jim Jones, had an astonishing 918 people take their own lives. It’s the largest mass suicide in history and a terrible reminder of the power of the cult of personality. Prior to September 11th, 2001, the act was the single largest loss of American life from a deliberate act, and some witnesses have characterized the event as a mass murder more so than a suicide. The incident that gave birth to the phrase “drinking the kool-aid”, a large vat of the drink (actually Flavor-aid) was mixed up containing valium and cyanide and members begin to ingest it via syringe, squirting in the mouths of children. A recording of the sermon given by Jim Jones during these last moments before the massacre can be listened below: These photos are all heartbreaking in their own way. There’s no way all of these photographers could have known exactly what they were capturing on film at the time.
