Funny I was just thinking along the same line. Li Jiawei came into Singapore in 1995, trained for 17 years before she got the medal. So she milked us of all our money for those 17 years and got her big fat Olympic bonus, before she "retired" back to Beijing. But here, we have a local 21 year old Singaporean who won us a medal in much less time than that...  Just what type of talent is this "Foreign Sports Talent Scheme" bringing in? Gold digging talents??

And from the article that nixorn posted above, the parents actually SOLD OFF their property to support Joseph's dreams, and took turns to go into the USA to follow his training and studies. And the grand irony is all the time, the government was heaping money on those "foreign talents"..... This is what happened when our government has such low opinion of our very own people, and still get so much support from them during voting time. The mother should have slapped that MIW besides her when she had that chance!!!!!

Joseph Schooling's gold medal truly belongs to him and his family.  It should not be placed inside govt's club or association for display.  Schooling's family brought proud to Singapore and wiped out their investment to fulfill their son's dream.  What did our govt and the heads of all the sport's club fulfilled after decades of importing FT and throwing millions of tax monies into sports?  Did they even think that Singaporeans are not capable of winning a gold medal?   Schooling's achievement is a wake up call to kick this govt in its butt and stop sucking him from his personal glory and achievements.

 

I am truly proud of Schooling.  I heard that the Table Tennis "PRC singaporeans" have entered the semi-final against PRC.  I don't want to rally behind them.  They are not local.

I am not a supporter of the imported talents too. But to give Feng TianWei due credit, she got her first medal in the Olympics after 5 years here and continued to remain in Singapore after getting that.

Don't worry, the real PRC is going to give the fake PRC 3-0, if u have see the final for both men and women single event, you will know how strong the real PRC are.....honestly, if really want to import talent, why table-tennis? might as well import another 2 or 3 world top swimmers and they can partner schoolings to win more medals in the relay event

Agree.  Which is why I felt proud for Schooling.  He will be our man and will carry rifle alongside Singaporeans should we be attacked. As for those PRCs, I cannot say the same. They will still miss their parents overseas.  However, I will still respect schooling's decision if he decided to become Texas citizens because he was greatly neglected by our govt and thus spend his last few years in America to fulfill his dream instead.  I hope, he became an opposition supporters in times to come.

If he is not fulfilling any contracts with the Sing gov, there is a great likelihood that they he will eventually leave Spore.

Juts listen to him speak, he is already more or less americanised.  Anyone who has spent many years (especially the formative years) will find it hard to re-adapt back to Singapore. More so if he can have a more fulfilling career in US.

We have already lost many Sporeans to US and Europe already.

Take a look at how our own government treats our own people like shxt, and yet despite all these, he told the media that "This swim wasn't for me. It's for my country." Our taxes is one of the lowest in the world already and they are most likely paying less taxes than what should be paying in their own home country. And this is not even taking into consideration that they are taking resources out from all of us. Just because they paid for the peanuts, doesn't mean they aren't taking the entire elephant away.

simply put it this way, if they had stay in china definitely no chance to go competition and cannot play for so long, in one of the recent match, u see a old china aunty in her 50s representing one of the European country, to be fair, is not only here but all over the world you see these second or third tier Chinese players representing European countries and I remember spoken to a guy from Sweden before and he did mention nowadays many Europeans have also lost the interest to watch the games that is being play by 2 Chinese player, it seems that the only few countries that have their own local players are japan, taiwan, south and north korea.

Wang Yue Gu is old-ish. Hard to compete at highest level already. The only super old one at Olympics (53) is Ni Xia Lian representing Luxembourg.

 

Plus, if she doesn't step down from the team, it will be harder for our own citizens to step up.

 

WYG is a first generation SG citizen, she set up a table tennis club in northern Singapore, her job now is coaching Singapore kids in TT (including junior elite paddlers), and her child is/will be Singaporean (I think either about to be born or born a short while ago).

 

A bit different from Li Jia Wei.
