nixorn
There is a related article in Today. "Over S$1 million. That is the estimated commercial worth of national swimmer Joseph Schooling now following his gold medal win at the Olympic Games.....said sports marketing and business analysts that TODAY spoke to. : .....he will be unable to cash in on any sponsorship or endorsement deals because he is still a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athlete. : As a University of Texas student and a member of the Texas Longhorns swimming team....governed by NCAA rules which state that all college athletes must maintain their amateur status in order to compete in NCAA competitions. Holding an amateur status means Schooling will be ineligible to receive payment for sponsorship deals and celebrity appearances, or risk being ineligible for NCAA competition and losing his scholarship. : ....it is possible for Schooling to bank in on his popularity and marketability, as long as he sustains it till after he graduates. And the most important factor tied into that is how well he does in the pool over the next few years. : Meanwhile, Schooling’s success at the Olympics is likely to benefit the Singapore sporting scene as a whole, and Khoo expects more corporate organisations to come on board in future to sponsor local athletes." http://m.todayonline.com/sports/schoolings-worth-over-s1m-analysts Edited August 18, 2016 by nixorn

In sillypore, the "contempt of court" has given the rich to do whatever they want. If you disagree, you can't say anything or risked being in "contempt" of the elite's judgement. From legal point of view, those ads violated individual rights. In singapore, wrong or right is very grey depending which class of people you were borned into. nixorn
Read this in My Paper....wrote by daniel yun, filmmaker. "..Peng Siong, I think, is happier for Schooling than many Singaporeans. He knows the sacrifice. But mostly, he knows the odds. His personal journey as an Olympian was, in his words, a painful experience. When he was 17 years old, he was the only Asian who made it to the finals of the 50m freestyle in Hawaii, the games organised by the Americans who boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980. He was then awarded a sports scholarship which based him in the Huston University. In the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, he won the gold in the 100m freestyle. At the Los Angles Olympics in 1984 he competed in the 100m freestyle, winning the ‘B’ consolation finals. He was ranked fourth in the World Swimming Championship in Madrid in 1986. Just when he was peaking, he was drafted into National Service at the end of 1986. He was physically fit for his Basic Military Training in Pulau Tekong but it was tough. When his fellow recruits were asked to do 50 pushups, he was asked to do 200 pushups. For someone who trained in water for years, the military exercises exerted a toll on his psychical being. In an 8km route march, he was down with heat exhaustion. After BMT, he went on to train as a naval officer. Here he would collapse from pneumonia and was hospitalised, his body finally giving way to the months of accumulated military training. It was at this point that he asked to be deferred from National Service for the Seoul Olympics. He spoke to his Commanding Officer who tried to discourage him. On his behalf, the Singapore Amateur Swimming Association, SASA, appealed to Mindef, which conceded to a six-month deferment. He was sent along with a handful of swimmers for intensive training in the States. The Seoul Olympics in 1988 was especially significant because it was the first time the 50m freestyle was introduced in the Olympics. Ang Peng Siong would finally get a chance to compete in a swimming event almost tailored for his body. In the heats, he clocked a time which placed him in the ninth place. He had missed the finals by one place. While a miss is as good as a mile and in the annals of Olympic history, there are many athletics with more compelling and heartbreaking stories, this missed opportunity was almost impossible for Peng Siong to bear. He broke down. And he would cry when he related this episode in his life...." "In the training of a winning Olympian, he explained the need for a clear pathway for training. The period for this pathway should be two Olympic cycles. And this pathway should not be interrupted. He believes a Singaporean male can still serve National Service in his 30s. When a coach spots an unmistakable potential and a hunger to fulfil this potential, besides the crucial support of the family unit, the system must feed this hunger so that this athlete has the fighting chance." https://danielyunhx.com/2016/08/19/ang-peng-siong-and-the-olympic-dream/#more-10947 shyc

nixorn
"Singapore can continue to produce more Olympic medallists and world beaters in the future, if Singaporeans have more belief in themselves. So said outgoing national swimming head coach Sergio Lopez during Joseph Schooling’s victory parade on Thursday (Aug 18). Lopez — who will step down from his role at the Singapore Swimming Association on Aug 30 — said that the lack of belief by Singaporeans in their own local-born athletes, coaches, and fellow countrymen is something that he had noticed during his 20-month tenure at the helm of the national swimming team here." http://m.todayonline.com/sports/singaporeans-should-have-more-self-belief-lopez And from joseph's mum.... "“If the going gets tough, it’s all the more important that the parents support their kid,” said May, a chartered accountant. “And believe you me, don’t tell your kids what to do. It doesn’t work. You have to let them find what they want to do. “Of course you have to guide them not to do silly things. But if they’re going for something good, just encourage them and be there for them. “If they’re down, support them ... give them a cuddle or a hug, it will help a lot. The kids will survive. If they know you’re behind them, they (become) very strong." http://m.todayonline.com/sports/encourage-and-support-your-children-and-hug-them-lot

(Photo: Tentera Troll Kebangsaan Malaysia Facebook page) When it comes to names, it’s best not to take things too literally – as seen in the case of Singapore’s Olympic darling Joseph Schooling who had his surname unintentionally translated into Malay by a Brunei newspaper. In a photo appearing in the print edition of the Media Permata daily, Schooling’s name appears as Joseph Persekolahan, which literally means “schooling” in Malay. A picture of the caption was circulated by the Tentera Troll Kebangsaan Malaysia Facebook page on Saturday (20 August), with many having a laugh over the blunder. While the online version of the story gets Schooling’s name right, what goes in print, unfortunately stays in print.

Guest Guest
https://sg.news.yahoo.com/joseph-schoolings-gift-to-a-blind-masseuse-083122996.html Joseph Schooling's gift to a blind masseur Ismail Akbar Abdullah (left) with a customer at Block 539 Bedok North Street 3. Photo: Safhras Khan/Yahoo Singapore He’s never met Singapore’s Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling before, but Ismail Akbar Abdullah is eternally grateful to the 21-year-old. Ismail, 62, will be receiving a special gift from the national swimmer who will be donating his free Grab rides to him. The free rides consist of $7,300 in ride sponsorship. The sponsorship takes effect immediately. The ride-hailing platform awarded Schooling and his parents the free rides after his historic gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the Rio Olympics in August. The University of Texas student is unable to accept any benefits due to National Collegiate Athletic Association rules, and decided to gift two local beneficiaries with the free rides. The other beneficiary is local para swimmer Benson Tan, who needs to travel between Pasir Ris and Barker Road for his training. When Yahoo Singapore met with Ismail at the void deck of Block 539 Bedok North Street 3 on Friday (30 September), where he is currently offering his massage services, he said he was very appreciative of the gift. “I am proud that Joseph still thinks about the less fortunate despite his success and this gift will be useful for me. "I need to take a taxi from my house in Kampong Bahru to Bedok and back. Both trips cost me $30. With the (sponsorship) I am able to save money,” said the father of three daughters. Ismail, who works from noon to 10pm six days a week offers a variety of massage services at the void deck of the block. He said he has been offering the services at Bedok since 2008 and treats between three and 20 customers per day. Ismail, who lost his eyesight after suffering from a fever in February 1968, was shocked when he received a call by Schooling’s representative to inform him of the gift last week. “I want to meet Joseph. He is an inspiration to everyone. I’ve heard about his success on the radio and I am very proud of him,” said Ismail. Ismail is also hoping to repay Schooling’s kindness sooner rather than later. “I wish he will visit me when he is back. Please tell him I will give him a proper massage to help ease his muscles,” he added. Roger, ivanl, KENZ and 1 other
Guest Guest
https://sg.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/fit-to-post-sports/para-swimmer-benson-tan-gets-free-grab-rides-courtesy-of-joseph-schooling-063939830.html Para-swimmer Benson Tan gets free rides courtesy of Joseph Schooling By Teng Kiat 8th ASEAN Para Games 2015 - OCBC Aquatic Centre, Singapore - 5/12/15 Swimming - Men's 100m Freestyle - S14 - Timed … When Joseph Schooling won a historic Olympic gold earlier last month, he was quickly inundated with offers of rewards from various companies. One of those was Grab, the ride-hailing platform, which offered Schooling and his family free rides for a year. But the 21-year-old has decided to instead gift those rides to two people, with one of them being local para-swimmer Benson Tan (pictured above). The other beneficiary is Ismail Akbar Abdullah, a 62-year-old blind masseur. Tan, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder at the age of five, is an accomplished swimmer who has won 11 ASEAN Para Games medals, seven of them gold, as well as a gold from the 2011 Special Olympics. The 25-year-old trains up to 10 times a week. Tan will get $7,300 worth of free Grab rides, which consist of two rides per day over six months. The rides will help with Tan's commute from his Pasir Ris home to his training venue at Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) at Barker Road. When contacted by Yahoo Singapore, Schooling said, “When I was told of this offer, I wanted to give it to someone that will need it more than I do, especially an athlete. Sometimes after training, you feel tired and would like to go back and rest as fast as you can. I hope with this, it will help Benson in his quest to be a top Para athlete.” Tan's mother, Mimi Tan, who was told about the offer earlier this week, is grateful for Schooling’s gesture. “I'm very thankful to Jo because this helps us to defray our transportation costs, especially when he has night training and gets back late [if he takes public transport],” she told Yahoo Singapore. “He knows Joseph… [and] Joseph knows Benson - when he came back some time ago, he trained at Swimfast [at ACS] and he’s trained together with Benson.” She added that her son, who works part-time as a sales assistant four times weekly, regards Schooling as an inspiration. Hafidz Ja’afar, the official representative of the Schooling family, told Yahoo Singapore that the Olympic champion decided to share the Grab reward as National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules meant that the University of Texas student was not eligible to receive benefits. “We contacted them (Grab), told them about his NCAA status… and we then proposed that we share it with someone who needs it more than Joseph,” he said. “We picked a non-sports and sports beneficiary - for the sports one we went to Benson. He doesn’t get funding and has to travel quite a bit, so we thought we can help him.” The sponsorship takes effect immediately, said Grab.
