1. Let me share some of my personal thoughts on home based masseurs. You do NOT need to agree with me.

2. Concerning Proper "Massage Bed". Massage bed are in layman language, a couch with a "hole" at the front for the customer to rest his head when he lies face down. You can see some of it at http://images.google.com.sg/images?q=massage+bed .

I believe the face-hole allows the spine to be "straight" when he prones on the couch and thus more comfortable to be massaged. The massage bed also provides a firm base that that the masseur can exert pressure during the massage. Finally a massage bed provides some elevation from the floor. This last factor is important in those "shops" where there are many people moving in and out and thus kick out "dust".

For first time visit to any home based masseurs, I will usually check with the masseur whether he has a massage bed. This question will usually sieve out those "fly by night" masseur. If the masseur has made an investment in proper equipment, it is an indication that he is "serious" about his trade. Masseurs that massage on their spring loaded sleeping bed are signs that they are "part-timers". Massage on those big spring bed may not be good for your back. Note this is just my rule-of-thumb (ie NOT always true) .

Several masseurs I tried prefer to massage on the floor (eg Jasen, Nic, Paul). They do an effective job too as they are able to leverage on their body weight when they press on the acu-points. These masseurs have very clean massage room, so I don't have problem where they massage me on a comfortable mattress on the floor.

3. Soft Music

Almost all the masseur I know plays soft music in the background. New age stuff or some soothing tunes. Some masseurs will play chinese oldies (probably due to my age they think I like oldies ) Nowadays music players / CD are cheap and playing the music is a easy way to lighten the mood. The masseur also uses it to time his own routine. A typical CD is about 1 hour. Once the CD completes, the masseur will know that time is out without even having to check the clock.

4. Massage Certification

This is another way to check whether the masseur practices "real" massage. Several masseurs like Dylan, Eddie, Nic will prominently display their certificates in their massage room.

However I must also warn that Experience and Attitude are probably as important if not more important. Having a massage certificate does not mean the masseur is good and vice versa.

5. Hygiene

I am very particular about hygiene.

Towels are dry and clean. Bed sheet are not crumpled (ie reused).

Floor does not feel sticky or dusty. The massage bed "face hole" does not feel oily or "smell".

The toilet wall/floor is clean, bright and has proper bathing lotions. Hot water bath to bath before going home/back to office.

6. Privacy

I prefer home based masseur because I am closet and don't like to be seen walking into gay massage shops. Going into home don't require me to be in the shop waiting area and accidentally running into people. However I am also wary of some home-based masseur who rent part of their house to other tenants or pack their customers back to back.

7. Personal Touch

Most home based masseur have previously worked in spas / shops and have build up their own customer based before striking out on their own. As they are their own boss (they get to keep all the massage fee), they tend to be more sincere and personal in their dealing with customers. Most will go the "extra" mile to keep their customers happy and hope that the customer will return for more massage session. Overall I think I get more value for $ from home based masseur then those in shops. There are of course black sheeps too. Some are so business face, keeps up-selling stuff or keeps sending spam messages.

8. Lack of Supervision

Home based masseur being their own boss sometimes results in lack of supervision. Some successful ones do get complacent, choose customer or cut-corners during massage. They have NO supervisor who checks on their massage quality, tell them off or check/correct their massage strokes from time to time. There is no formal process like those tier-one spas.

Therefore sometimes we hear complaints that some home based masseur's skills are lacking or service standard vary. This is a self discipline issue. Home-based masseur have to continuously go upgrading to keep themselves relevant. I note some masseurs (eg Eddie) will regularly go for new skill upgrade. There are reasons why some of the more successful masseurs are surviving after so many years on their own and yet able to maintain their good reputation.

9. Massage is a Personal Experience

Massage is a very personal experience. Our preference of what is good and bad varies. Some emphasis on the strength, the skill, the mood, the look of the masseur, the delivery, the ending, the post-massage effect etc. Most of us are NOT the most "discerning" type though.

When I read comments about masseur, I see some of those I enjoy are not liked by fellow BWers and vice versa. I can understand and accept that. I believe this diversity in opinion is healthy.

However when I see people complaining about supposedly factual matters. Example: No music when I know that the particular masseur definitely has a music player. Example lousy oil used without substantiating on what is wrong with that particular type of oil used, etc I know these are trouble makers or competing masseurs (hey it is a dog eat dog world). I will usually ignore them.

ED, the skills of the shop is above average, good for a total body relaxation. Though the oil used is nothing to shout about, but can't expect much for $38/hr.
