Digital Camera

Recommended Posts

Hi Alex,

I don't know much about cameras too. Anyway, the following info is what I got from another writer for newbie digicam buyer:

Things a newbie digicam buyer need to know:

a) MegaPixels (MP) – usually effective pixels are slightly lesser ie a 2.11MP cam may be only 1.98MP effective.

b) Optical zoom – in short, it is the actual zooming in to the subject.

c) Digital zoom – in short, it is just enlarging the image without actual zoom. It is irrelevant to most users, not recommended as it will make a pic look blur and noisy.

d) Size & Resolution – 640 x 480, 1600 x 1200 etc, at different levels of quality too. For example, Canon cam uses Normal, Fine, SuperFine. Higher size means able to print bigger pics, while better resolution means better quality pics of course.

e) LCD - the popular mini screen used as the viewfinder as opposed to the traditional optical viewfinder (the one that your eye look through to capture a shot). Also used to review images and change settings.

f) Storage media type – common types include Compact Flash and Smartmedia.

g) Movie capabilities – length of movie, size (resolution), with or without sound

h) Battery – proprietary or normal AA/AAA battery.

i) Picture format and sizes – certain formats take up more space than others.

j) Interface – commonly via USB. Check compatibility.

Thanks for ur reply! You r really an expert man.. Can i know, would u recommend canon ixus850, panasonic dmc-fx50, sony t100 or fujifilm f40 fd?

Hi Alex,

Camera can/may be a personal choice. Best if you are to look at each one of them, make a basic comparison and choose one that you like most and that it fits your budget comfortably.

Perhaps, some other cam/photo enthusiasts might want to extend their help here. :)

Any recommendations for a good digital camera? ;)

What's the purpose?

For travel shots or u taking it as a hobby?

I recently bought the Panasonic DMC-FZ50.

It's easy to use and the pic quality is fantastic. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

But if you want a travel cam. I find it a little too bulky. :(

in this day and age of digital cameras...

i still shoot in film.

and black and white.

The standard camera with film is still in use although the digital camera is very popular. Any evidence in Courts still needed photos taken in standard camera rather in digital. I was told that some experts still able to manipulate photos taken in digital by doing 'cut and paste'.

Any recommendations for a cheap but good digital cam? I was using Fuji Finepix but it sucks and videos also no sound... I am now using a DSLR but it is so bulky to carry for holidays and without the extra flashes and lens (which all cost a bomb!), it is not as good...

Anyway, how cheap is cheap for digital cameras nowadays?

And where can get them on installments?

I LOVE to shoot in film... Just scared of loading problems...

And I also love B/W pics... I will even take B/W pics when I go for my holidays... But sadly, as I need to ensure I get pictures, I will also take digital pics... So, it was very troublesome as I need to bring along 2 cameras...

So, need to find a good (and cheap) digital cam now... :P

My personal choice of Digital Cameras:

1st Choice: Panasonic Lumix (Leica lens)

2nd Choice: Ricoh

3rd Choice: Canon

Overrated: Sony, Nikon

I prefer to go for cameras running on AA size batteries, so that in the middle of your holiday shoud you encounter battery flat issue you can replaced them readily, and not having to wait for your camera battery to be recharged.

Whats your purpose of having Digital Camera? What do you want from a Digital Camera? :D

..... having digital camera is due to small, handy and it could easily just put in pocket like handphone. And in addition should have bigger viewing screen and of course better picture by having bigger megapixs.

I used to have the 1st generation digital camera with small screen, only 1 megapix and lousy battery, just few shots and the battery needed to be replenished

Gosh, so many to choose from ?

The disadvantage of Sony camera that I have to use their Memory Stick only, as for Canon, Casio and Ricoh, they use SD card and Olympus & Fuji, they use XD card.

Thats why I am asking what you want from a Digital Camera mah.. :P If memory card is one of your criteria....then it will naturally narrow down your choice. :D

For me, I will look for features like Anti-Shake/Vibration Reduction, good noise control at high ISO, battery life, the SIZE of the camera and of coz the LENS itself (what kind of lens, the fstop, zoom range). :D

OK, that were great tips :thumb: , especially features like Anti-Shake and the lens. I saw one digital camera's ads showing they dip the camera into water and dropped it from 1.50m high to proof the casing rigidity ?

Thanks anyway :thumb:
