There are many saunas in Tokyo however not all are foreigner/gaijin friendly. I had been in 2 Saunas which foreigner friendly, Kaikan 24 in Ueno and Kaikan 24 in Shinjuku 3-chome. Both welcome foreigners and value for money there. There is also another one Kaikan 24 near Akasaka Temple but I've never been there. All the saunas are multi-storeys building. There is also a sauna called 'Treffpunkt' which advertised in Utopia Asia saying foreigner welcome, however my friend and I were refused for entry when we visited them.

Most sexshops for gay related items such as books, magazines, VCD etc are concentrated in Shinjuku 3-chome. There is also a sexshop specialising second hand gay VCD however the price is still too expensive. The biggest sexshop around the area is Books Rose offering gay books, magazines and VCD.

My first trip to Tokyo was on business also and in the evening about 8.30pm I managed to sneak out my boss and took taxi from Ginza (where my hotel located) to Shinjuku area. Wahlau, the taxi fare almost S$70. After walked around for almost 2 hours, I also could not find any sexshop, bar and sauna in the area because the numbering system in Tokyo very confusing, so decided to go back to hotel for another S$70 taxi trip. What a waste!

My second trip was a leisure one and only last year, purposely booked hotel at Shinujuku 2-chome and only walking distance to 3-chome and to do this, you have to do some research at day time where the sauna and shop are located then it would be much easier to find it in the evening.

If you take the subway, it is better to buy a day multi-trip ticket, because if you take the wrong line, you still can back again without buying new ticket. A single trip cost a lot of money. I think the day ticket about S$10-11 and valid till 00.00 midnite. When you cruise in the sauna, don't forget the time of last subway as taxi fare will cost a bomb.

What worry me is the transport fee. I heard a friend of my took a taxi of 80km for $140. Wow somebody ask me to bring a thousand US dollar Just in case.

2727, normally all big department stores like Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi, Matsuya, Sogo and many other which we've never heard before their name in Spore, they do have foodcourt in the basement, however I still feel that their foodcourt also not that cheap and only open during the standard business hours.

The cheapest of all foods as far as I experienced it is the 'cha shoba', is kind of cold green noodle, just as a very simple cold noodle, no meat at all and this stall you might find in some corners. Eating standing, there is no even a single stool for you to seat. You don't need to talk, just point the picture to the stall holder. The price in the range about S$3.5-4.50. It depends on its location, towards tourist attraction area, the price of cha soba is on the higher side. But it is quite tasty, I like to eat this too, if you eat this at our 'Sushi Tei' outlet here, cost about S$6.

The next reasonable price is Yoshinoya outlet, we also have some outlets here in Spore like in HarbourFront Centre, Ngee Ann City basement etc. The colour of the shop a striking orange colour. The price of food is on average of S$8 and you get a bowl of rice and top up with beef on it. There are other dishes if you don't take beef. This outlet operates in this way, you have to select the dishes shown in picture from a kind of vending machine and insert the money (the machine accept also note) and you get the ticket & your change also. Then just sit down at eating counter and the operator/helper will get the ticket and prepared the selected food. I think the operator/helper not allowed to handle cash, therefore you have to buy ticket from the machine.

The other one is McDonald Burger, MOS Burger etc. I also feel that their price is not that cheap and can't even fill up the stomach. Like our McDonald here, the cost of set meal already about S$5.60 (say $6) and in Tokyo, maybe double the price, I forgot about the actual price although I have tried before and realised that actually not that cheap.

we all know Tokyo isnt the cheapest place to travel, but with some planning u do can max your $$$ there (and nope you dont have to bring thousands of US $)

Eat

- crazygolfer has mentioned a few of the joints which is quite cheap

- you can try standing ramen store where it cost around US 4 to 5 per bowl.

- If u thick skin enough, the supermarkets in Tokyo offered a lot of free trial food, and the portion is quite sizeable (unlike our local supermarket) so if you go to a big size supermarket, you do can get enough to fill your stomah when you walked around.

- still on supermarket, if you drag your dinner to after 8pm (or 9pm) they will have discounts on their meals. sometimes you can get sushi at 50% off

- Never ever tried those make shift store which open at night (that constantly seen in Jap drama where the characters ate tibets and drank sake/ beer) there is no clear price indication and before u know it, it can amounted to quite a lot.

Travel

- yeap taxi fare is extremely highly and if it is not urgent, best to stick to public transport

- if after the subway hour, you can try 24 hours sauna (both str8 and PLU joints offer overnight stay)

- some Karaoke offers 24 hour as well, quite common to see office exec booked the rooms to spend the night if they missed the train.

- capsule hotel, one of the last resort coz it is not cheap, the last i checked is US40 to 50 for the misarble small size.

Oralb, you are right. Actually, I wanted to mention it at my previous posting but felt so 'cheapo' that's why I withdrew it, but since you mentioned it and 'already picah lobang', might as well I describe it now.

What you said, I actually experience it. My friend and I were on windowshopping at one big dept store in Ginza area, I forgot which one either Matsukaya or Mitsukoshi and we were looking for golf stick on sales. After found and bought it, we went to basement with intention to buy Ocha or green tea as the Japs are famous for it.

Once arrived at basement where the supermarket/foodcourt is located, one lady sales promotor offered us a small bowl of kind of cooked noodle for free tasting, then we walked further, another one offered us for one kind of instant noodle with new flavour. After we bought the green tea, a queue for free sampling of a kind jelly/pudding, so we also did it. In my mind I said, I don't care, nobody recoqnised us here and the last one we've managed to drink a cup of the new flavour of UCC, Japanese brand for coffee. By completing the 2 free main course + free dessert and free coffee, our stomach already full.

Well, I told my friend, today we have the lucky day by accidently experience it and saved some money, for free lunch :clap: Anyway, if you rushing from one store to another store, this can't be achieved.

Moustache, the sauna, spa, steamroom and hotbath/hotpool provided in the golf clubhouse are for golfers only. There are of course some of them gay golfers included me, however most of gay golfers would be well behaved, as their golfkakis, customers or guests are straight guys. If would very embarassing, if you 'caught' by gay behaviour in front of 'straight' guest or client .......

This also applies to the Japs golfers, although some of them are also gays, they would be behaved normal, during their business trip here

Then if free & easy, hotel 3-star area in Shinjuku 2-chome about S$200 per room/night plus transporation cost and makan (hahaha this one, I know where to get a free one, so long thick skin)

But the worst thing is winter now, just check the weather in Tokyo about 5-9 degree C daytime and then it goes down to -1 degree C in the evening. Late Dec and Jan 06 will be colder some more

Actually the main gay belt is in Shinjuku Ni-Chome instead of San-Chome. The gay vcd shops and gay bars and pubs are concentrated in Ni-Chome, though some of them have since swell to San-Chome.

Should you decide to buy some of their magazines, dvds or toys there, note that they now accept credit card payments. Book Rose may not be the cheapest as competition is fierce, and there are some other smaller shops selling the items at a slightly cheaper price.

The original 24-kaikan is the one located in Asakusa, behind Asakusa Kannon temple. The crowd there is mainly matured men, and busiest on weekends before 6pm. 24-kaikan Ueno and 24-kaikan Shinjuku are opened much later after the overwhelming success of the original one. The crowd in 24Ueno is stocky to cubby to chubby, mostly the gachiri and g-men type. The crowd in 24shinjuku caters to the young and lean twinks.

agree you shd get your dvds and vcds from HK. Plenty of shops. Some of them you place your order from their catalogues (they dont keep the stocks in the shop), and then you pay. They will give u a time, say 20 min, later and they will pass you the package at the street corner... this was my experience in Causeway Bay or they deliver in a sealed bag to your hotel. Quite reliable. Tokyo things are way too expensive.

I was based in Tokyo for a couple of years .. my favorite sauna is still 24hours @Ueno. There is always some crowd, and there is something for everyone. If you like younger and skinnier, leaner ones, 24hours@Shinjyuku will be your cup of tea... besides, the bath area is quite clean and cruisy. Love the group sex there.

Have fun, as for the bars.. so many... but a few are especially foreigner friendly.. eg. Vic in Shinjyuku Nichome, as the master speaks English.. clientele mostly hunky and some bears. Ocassionally you see one or two femmes, but they are quite nice especially when you smile or they find out you are from Singapore! But it helps heaps if you have a local with you to interpret.. then you will find that almost everyone wants to chat with you.

if u are in Tokyo purely for sex, then get off the Skyliner Express from Narita Airport, keep your bags in the coin lockers (Yen 600 for 24 hours, I think) at the train station n just bring your essentials or overnight bag with you.

Check straight into 24 Hour Ueno and you can stay till next morning by just paying the regular entrance fee of 2400Yen.

AFter leaving the sauna in the morning, Spend the rest of day exploring Tokyo city, and by nightfall, go bar hopping and then head back to 24 hour Ueno or Shinjyuku to do the same thing. This way u don't pay any hotel! Voila!

for those newbies going to tokyo, if you search the forum, you will get a lot of tips how to stretch your $$$.

while it wont make tokyo a cheap place to go, but it is not as expensive as what most expect, unless you insist on staying 5star and eating sashimi every meal. (FYI sashimi is expensive even to the native jap, thost coveyer belt serves sushi rather than sashimi)
