Andy@Tokyo
Could you advise me for the question of bus-ticket purchasing through the website you mention ? Castaway, yap... they are all in Japanese (the booking sites). I guess the simplest way is to purchase on the spot. e.g. buy at shinjuku. castaway
Thanks Andy and other members who advised and contributed information here. I am just back home safely from Japan and here are some feedback and sharing of mine : - I dont speak a Japanese word so I was like deaf and mute over there but my skin needs to be thick enough to keep approaching and asking people for instruction even some or almost nobody can understand/speak English over there and always refuse to answer or run away really. Just need show map, point and pronounce the name of place you want to go + act "cute" If they know that you just want information, not money or stealing anything, they are very polite and helpful, some even bring me to the place, unbelieaveable. So dont worry if you dont speak Japanese use your body language. But Tokyo is the place I was totally lost (dont ever think can find street name because almost all was in Japanese, only some big road has Alphabet), MRT system is 20 times bigger than Singapore. I asked 10 people in the street and they all gave me 11 directions and it took me 3 hours to reach to clubs then was so tired for anything - My accommodation is below OK, cheap, free wifi, in very quiet area and the owner is so so nice but not recommend (a little dirty, far from MRT station, no breakfast). Anyway, with that price, cant ask for more - The best way to travel around Tokyo and to/from Narita Airport is by using SUICA card, same as EZlink, you need to put 500 Yen for deposit and got it back when you return. - I could not find yukata/kimono/jinbei because it is expensive and not really the one I am looking for.- I "hate" shopping in Tokyo because it made me spend so so so much money there. Shibaya for fashion and Akihabara for electronics and both places have great restaurants also. A small tip, in Akihabara, after walking alot, stop in relax 10 mins in a massage chair for FREE (in 4th or 5th floor I think) - Sauna 24 : it was in the end of the road with Arty Farty Club. I was tired to find by myself so just jump into the Gay DVD shop and ask the bear chubby recepionist there, he was very kind to show me . This is the biggest sauna I ever seen, 7 floors. Follow instruction then there is no problem at all. Staff is very friendly, receptionist can speak English even asked my name and checked if I had fun , lol. 1st floor is changing room. 2nd Floor is shower, bath house, steam, jacuzzi, mist room (1st time I see). 3rd and 4th Floor has room for sex, open sex, of course. 5th, 6th and 7th floors are for private rooms. A little bit strange to me is that all the time I had sex in open place and there were many guys standing or lying around watching, then some even used light to "see" some private part more clearly, so crazy ... the place is like in hostel or kindergarten with many single beds, pillow, sheet, ... I feel sorry for staff working there who have to clean and wash things so often Btw, entry fee is 2700 Yen. Not cheap at all. I was in Sunday eve so the crowd is less, not many young guys but quite few uncles + I cant absorb Japanese "beauty" at all, especially guys who trim their eyebrow. It is like trendy overthere. - I went to Club Arty Farty because one guy through internet advised me and said it was the best. Entry is 2000 Yen including 2 free drink. It was 16 year celebration but club is very small and similar as Taboo, nothing special at all. Passing Advocates Café and saw it is small and almost all guys standing on the street, 90% white guys. Gay guys are very friendly there, I asked a couple on the street where is the Bars and they walked wit me all the way there, so nice - Food is not expensive at all because all the time you will eat in small food shops and restaurants (not Kopitiam) + Services in Japan is No.1 over the world. It really worth to spend there. Anybody can explain why in restaurants, all people always talking "something" while customers are eating ? Sometimes it is nice but a little bit strange to me To be continued Edited October 8, 2009 by castaway Quote Sometimes, the greatest journey is the distance between two people
castaway
- Onsen : Yes, I did went to the Onsen in Tokyo, it is near one of MRT station (Telecom Tower Station)http://www.ooedoonsen.jp/higaeri/english/aboutus.htmlThe Onsen is really great for me. The normal Adult ticket is 2900 Yen but dont understand why the receptionist only asked me to pay 1900 Yen (child ticket), hahah. Then after changing to kimono, you will enter to a small traditional Japanese streets where everybody wear kimono and with all food shops like Kopitiam. You will give a key with number as in sauna, so whatever you eat, they will charge into your number then you pay when checking out. It is really convenient. Then when you are tired of food, go to onsen which is unforgetable experience to me. I saw some gay guys as well by my gaydar but was too shy to start conversation with a cute gay couple even they did try to approach and eyes candy, I wish I would not that shy then we will have fun . - Bus : I took night bus from Tokyo to Kyoto (4500 Yen/one way) by Willer Traveller. It is really nice and convenient but scared thing to me is that because I dont speak or understand a Japanese word so I dont know when I should stop whenever they inform in speaker. For example, my bus should arrive Kyoto @ 7.30 am as schedule but in fact it arrived @ 7 am and my phone alarm set is around 7.15 am so by some reasons, I suddently wake up and saw many people leaving then quickly run and asked driver if it is Kyoto station. Luckily for me otherwise I would traveled to another city already. It happened same for return trip to Tokyo but this time, my phone had no more battery so it was worse then I was not allowed to miss the station, if not, I would miss my flight back to Singapore as well. - For travelling in Kyoto, they have one day bus ticket 500 Yen so you can discover the whole city in budget way, it is convenient enough to me. And indeed, Kyoto is so so beautiful and I must say, if there is any culture or city in Asia, as an Asian guy should be proud of compared to others like European or American then it is Kyoto. It is beautiful in every detail. - Everything in Kyoto is more expensive than Tokyo so be prepared. And remember that there are always lockers in MRT station or train station for you to leave your lugs (300 Yen/day). These are all my experience to share based on my trip to Japan. Hope it helps and also hope other members remember to share their experience as well Now, it is time for me to continue watching "So you think you can dance Season 5" haha Quote Sometimes, the greatest journey is the distance between two people
Guest Tom
I will be travelling to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto for Christmas and New Year. I will be travelling with a couple (husband & wife) and a female colleague of mine. The tour agency recommended us a hotel (3-star) at Shinjuku which costs about $160 per day. For four person, we need two rooms, and for ten nights, accommodation alone will cost us $3,200.My male friend said he could share the room with me and his wife could share the other room with my female colleague. I thought it isn't nice to split husband and wife, even though my female colleague don't mind sharing the room with me on a twin sharing room, we wanted to explore a budget one-bedroom apartment at least within the same budget in Shinjuku area. Can I hear from anybody who can give me some recommendations? Basically, we want to all stay together and don't split.Another question is, should we spend Christmas and New Year in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyto? I tried before and could locate budget hotels (even hotels with no stars). the low price ranged ard 4000~6000 yen per person per night.Unfortunately, it is in Japanese and i dont have time to do translation now... Hope other members would be able to help up.I think its entirely up to u whether u wan to spend ur Christmas in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto. Deco would be up but its not a public/official holiday in Japan. I think u could have indicated in greater details what u are looking for.. e.g. type, etc...This site lists the events that are upcoming http://www.stag.jp/ Again in Japanese. If I have to leave my bigger luggage at the train station locker, do I need to pay daily or can I leave it for a few daysHi MitchI will be in Tokyo during last week of Nov.What is the price range of accommodation that you are looking at and I can help to suggest some cheap accommodations for you.You can stay at the Gay sauna for the night (e.g. 24-kaikan). It costs 2,600Yen for 13 hour stay. As such, if you enter the sauna at 9pm, you will need to leave the sauna by 10am the next morning. If you exceed the 13-hr stay, you will need to pay 200Yen for each hour you exceed. The locker size provided in the sauna is similar to the ones you can find in the saunas in Singapore. As such, you can only put a small bag. If you are intending to bring a big luggage, will suggest that you leave it in the lockers which can be found in the JR shinjuku station. The price varies from 300 Yen onwards depending on the size of the locker you are hiring. If I am not wrong, rental fee is for a maximum of 24 hours. If you exceed the 24hr limit, you will need to put in extra money (amounting to the number of days which you have exceeded) to be able to open to retrieve your luggage. If you will be staying in the hotel after the first days of your arrival (e.g. on business trip after that), and if it is a 4* hotel or more, you can request to leave the luggage at the conceige counter. It is quite common for people to leave it there while taking a side trip to other parts of Japan (e.g. Hakone). castaway
gpfun is correct. You guys can store your big lugguage in Shinjuku station with 300 Yen/day, more than 24 hours, you need to pay another 300 Yen but if I remember exactly, you only can store upto 3 days only. I am not sure with solution of entering sauna from 9 pm and check out 10 am. Do you plan to go bar/club also or just staying inside sauna ? Because I am not sure if you can go out and enter sauna without paying additional ticket. Take note. As I remember, around Shinjuku or gay area, there are many Love hotels (like Hotel 81) with price around 9000 Yen/day. They also have price for short time . You dont need to go to Hakone for Onsen, there is one in Tokyo already and it is very nice actually. See my previous post for your information. gpfun
Hi MitchIf you are looking for a clean room to stay for the night and don't mind the small room, you can consider Sunlite hotel for around 7,100+ Yen a night: http://www.sunlite.co.jp/english/21st-plan.htm.Hotel room is clean, though on the small side. It is located near the Shinjuku gay area, and do note that the hotel has a curfew between 2am to 6am where you will be not able to enter/exit from the hotel as the reception area is closed.Alternatively, you can also stay at the limited private rooms in 24-kaikan:http://www.juno.dti.ne.jp/~kazuo24/shinjyuku/koshitu.htm (Apologies, most info are in Japanese)For 5,000Yen a night, you can get a single private room to yourself from 9pm to 11am. Do note that the rooms are limited and you may need to arrive early after 9pm (especially on Friday and Sat night; other nights, usually rooms are available) to ensure that you obtain the room. For such room, you can bring a cabin bag and put it in your room and locked the room. You can have fun in the sauna and go back to the room to sleep for the night. Do note that credit card is not accepted at 24-kaikan and you have to purchase the room coupon using cash at the vending machine located in the entrance. If you want to spend a romantic time with your bf and wants to explore the natural side of Japan, you can consider going to Hakone or Izu where the hot spring resorts are. It is quite an experience to soak in the hot spring and then retire to the night with your bf, cuddling each other to bed in the cool weather. Do note that there is virtually no night life in the resort area. As such, you can only either go to hot spring or just enjoy each other company. You may wish to consider this relatively inexpensive package by Odakyu Company where you can get a return train ticket to Hakone, a night stay in hot spring resort and a 2-day unlimited pass and guide book, and free admission (for certain sights only) to view the various sights available in Hakone. More information are available at this website:http://www.odakyu.jp/english/qtours/hakone_course2.html. You can book online from the website.Oh yes, I will be in Tokyo from 26 to 30 Nov. Let me know if you need more info on planning your Tokyo trip.

iamwill
after so long, i finally found time to sit down and write about my experience for my first trip to Japan in April this year.I went to kyoto/osaka, hakone, tokyo and mt fuji.Transport - i got the 7 days JR pass in sgp. good for me cos i travel to different areas, especially in kyoto cos i travel to osaka for short day trips and heading back to kyoto in the evening. honestly, for the jr pass, just one trip from airport to kyoto and a trip from kyoto to tokyo almost covers the cost of the jr pass. unless u are only staying in one place, i strongly recommend the JR pass.travelling in the cities are quite easy. we got the day pass for the metro. but have to choose the day pass wisely cos different lines have different passes. in a city there are at least 2 different lines running. so its good to really plan your route wisely. for buses and train travelling, i rely on reading the chinese characters for the stops. yes, most of the road names are written in chinese characters and we got a map that has the same chinese characters. that made our travelling a lot easy.Accomodation - i stayed in 3 different types of accomodations during my 9 days there. in kyoto we stayed in a ryokan. it cost about 10000yen for a twin sharing room. sleep on a tatami, and the bath is public bath within the ryokan. nice small cosy place for me although some might find it troublesome cos for my room, we dun have toilet and bath, so need to go to the communal toilet and bath. but location wise, its just 5 min walk from kyoto main station and the bus interchange, so its quite accessible. and since we got the jr pass, we stayed in kyoto even for osaka. for hakone, we stayed in a onsen hotel. cost about 30000 yen for 2 for 1 night. inclusive of a dinner and a breakfast. JR pass came to good use here cos we took the jr from kyoto to tokyo to leave our luggage and took the jr to hakone for the onsen trip. the onsen has and indoor bath and an open air huge tub which can comfortably sit 3. weather was cold cos it was raining and it was damn shiok to soak in the hot spring water. the meals are really like what they show in japan hour. small exquisite dishes with fresh ingredients. there was a "maid" assigned to our room who will bring the meals to our room and make out tatami. nice lady although she did not speak any english, she really made the effort to introduce each dish to us. she even gave us a paper crane which she made herself. for tokyo, i stayed in shijuku washington hotel. just normal 4 star hotel nothing much. although it says shinjuku, its about 15min walk to the main shinjuku area where the crowds are. places of interests - in kyoto and osaka, we went to almost all of the more famous temples and castles. so much till i was quite bored of them that i din want to visit any in tokyo. the temples and shogun castles were historical sites and interesting architecture and landscape. when we were at osaka castle, the park outside the castle was filled with people having picnics and the sakura were in bloom. the scenery and atmosphere was fantastic! hakone was a beautiful place with natural scenery. especially in the 2nd day when the sky was clear. took a walk from the onsen hotel down to the train station. the train was those old type plying the mountain route. interesting experience and views.tokyo is just for shopping. we got a day-trip for mt fuji. the view of fuji was magnificent. was lucky cos the weather was fine and we went up to the 5th station, the highest station reachable by bus. was actually a little dissapointed at the sight of the area while on the station. probably it was because the dirt has just been washed down from the mountain top. but from there looking afar was great.food - most food we ate were like ramen, udon, rice bowls etc. yoshinogya was good there. average cost of a meal cost about SGD$15. we also got some street snacks, fan tuan from convienience stores as meals while on the go on the train. the bento that are sold at the train stations were not bad. gay areas - din really explore the gay areas much. only went to the one in osaka (forgot what the area is called) and shinjuku ni-chome. tried to cruise one jap g-man while i was in one of the gay bookstore but too bad he wasn't interested . while we were in osaka, there wasn't much crowd. was chatting with one of the aj pub owner. he mentioned that most people were at the osaka castle for the cherry blossoms. end up went back empty handed. was strolling around shinjuku ni-chome, and when i was walking past 24 kaiken, a jap exec was trying to cruise me. too bad both of us din make furhter action. we were waiting for each other at the street below 24. after a while he went into 24, and i didn't. went into one of the aj pub i saw from utopia website. when i stepped in, suddenly all eyes were staring at me, i felt uncomfortable and immediately went out.shopping - generally the designs of the clothings and shoes are quite wide range. from funky to stylish. found a few pieces which really suit my taste. and the designs u dun get in sgp. although the prices are quite steep compared to singapore. one of the advice i got from here was to get a good walking shoes. that was so true cos we walked from morning 8am till night 1am almost everyday. walked till my shoe sole came off. lucky that was an old pair. end up had to get a new pair of shoes. Would 2000 SGD be enough?I did not plan any shopping in Tokyo but in the end, spent alot in Akihabara, Shibuya. For my 5 day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, I spent around 1000 S$ including air& bus ticket + accommodation + transportation + food + small shopping + gay things ... . Another big shopping cost me like another 1k So everything depends on you but 2000 S$ is very possible  Quote Sometimes, the greatest journey is the distance between two people

Guest getafix21
My hotel has already been settled, so if I set aside 2k, that should be enough?
castaway
It is advised to change Yen in Singapore (Mustafa) before going to Japan because it is not easy to find Money changer on street or even ATM there + they may only accept US$ note Quote Sometimes, the greatest journey is the distance between two people
gpfun
Just to highlight that if you are in big city areas and you are desperate to withdraw cash from your bank account, you can withdraw cash at any 7-11 convenience store so long as your ATM card is accepted worldwide (with the VISA Plus or Cirrus logo printed at back of the card).More information are available at the following website:http://www.sevenbank.co.jp/intlcard/index2.html

gpfun
Anybody have idea if my iphone with M1 Sim card will work in Tokyo? If not what do I need to for Handphones? If you are on 3G network with M1, it will work. I am on SingTel 3G network using my iPhone. It works in Japan. However, do note that auto-roaming charges can be very expensive.

Is it a moisturizer, cause it feels much lighter then the usual moisturizer that I usually use. Can i get it in Singapore?
