I want to share my first time experience in Ueno 24 Kaikan:

I sort of agree with you re Japanese not being able to differentiate Singaporeans from Japanese.  I agree that the guys in 24 Kaikan are not good at differentiating but the guys at the train sushi places have no problems with differentiating at all. I think it might be the difference in dressing. When I go to the train sushi places, I always get shown this card that says that they dont accept credit cards!

i was in tokyo this jan, well it's not really that bad shopping-wise i think. you can still buy almost everything other than clothes e.g. shoes bags wallets, and even for clothes they do have non-jacket stuff. i did go overboard on my shopping when i was there

United Airlines/Delta are having a good price ticket for 614 to Tokyo in early January...so tempted to go.

 

Not too sure on what to do. Probably won't be shopping much since it's winter.

May consider a night in Kaikan or something.

I learnt about the smile thing because I went with my jc friends to Tokyo. One of them was quite tanned and she tend to have a very wide smile because her mouth was quite big.

My Japanese friend told me that my jc friend was quick to spot as a foreigner in Japan.

Especially women do not smile too widely.

Even for those who smile widely, they have relatively smaller mouths so the smile doesn't look too wide.

 

I was given a massage by a Japanese man.

I told him that in Singapore, AJs won't really bother about massage. It was kiss, suck, lick, cuddle, fuck, cum and go.

He didn't get the idea about the dark maze. It's somewhat absent in Japan.

 

I'm not a very winter person so I couldn't bother about shopping for winter stuff.

I think the promotion has already started. For January, SQ is trying to clear 'stock' by offering 2-to-go promotions now.

 

If SQ can hit at least 700, I'm good to go. But if it's beyond March, I will go in April then since my 'big' trip is during the Tokyo Pride Parade.

Still have not gotten over getting 620 for a SQ ticket back in April 2012. 

 

MUJI is pretty much cheaper in Japan for a number of items. Usually they mark up 1.5x - 2x in Singapore.

If you notice MUJI Singapore having some sales, most of the time, they are just slashing the prices to the level in Japan.

 

I bought a minimalist alarm clock for $23 then. When I came back to Singapore, it was over $40!

Same goes for my towel which cost me $10 per item, but it was like over $20 per piece in Singapore.

 

Anyway, MUJI Singapore is changing its strategy so prices have been sort of going down, coupled with the yen depreciation.

For the first time, MUJI prices some regular shirts at $49. Normally, it's $59 - $79...

The Muji in Shinjuku is not bad - stocks quite a large range of stuff as compared to a few years ago. The Muji in Ueno is hopeless, waaaay too small. Where is the Muji in Akihabara? I bought a Muji bag years ago and it is still in very good condition. I bought ankle socks at the same time but the socks were/are not good quality ones and the elasticity gave way sooner than expected.  Japan is good for miniturisation and aesthetics which is why I think the likes of Sony went into shock when they were leapfrogged by Apple producing the Iphone.

 

And yes, never thought about it but there are no such things as dark rooms in the hattenbas and saunas in Tokyo - I suppose there is not enough space for them to have just one area dedicated to being a dark room? Good for me though, I hate dark rooms.

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to me that there was a small dark room in 24 kaikan Asakusa not so long ago.

There was also a room with beds and bunks in 24 kaikan Ueno, with nearly no light.

Not really mazes, but pretty dark!

Actually the communal bedrooms at Kaikan are quite dark. The deeper you go in, the less you will be able to see anything, except for people moving around.

I was told once that the dark maze is a Southeast Asian concept.

Yes go, if nothing else then for the experience. 

 

Remember (not necessarily but this seems to be the crowd)

Asakusa if you into older guys.

Ueno if you are into beefy, chubs.

Shinjuku if you are into younger guys.

I'm thinking of flying there in mid-January too. It will be the maximum winter in January so the weather might be a little cold. 

 

Tokyo hardly goes below zero but this year's winter is a bit harsh so it may go sub zero at night.

There was this snowstorm which I got caught in mid-Jan this year. But well I can objectively say that Tokyo is truly not prepared for anything more than 2cm of snow in a day. I saw the temple staff at Senso-ji trying to use water from a hose to melt the snow around the temple. Yamanote stopped. It was madness; pretty white madness.

I was thinking of flying in on Thursday, 9 January, and returning on Friday, 17 January i.e. experience only 1 weekend.

But somehow if I fly in on 12 January (Sunday) and return on 20 January (Monday), I will get to experience 1.5 weekends in Tokyo.

 

Kind of a dilemma on which period to book.

9 - 20 January does sound like a little too long for a simple getaway in Kanto.... 

Staying longer in Tokyo would also add on to accomodation fee.

There are 3 different ones run by the same company, I chose the largest i.e. the one above the Pachinko parlour. The insulation was great - you cant hear the noise from the parlour downstairs. If you walk in and show them your passport, there is also a 500 yen discount, am not sure if the promotion is still running. For 2500 yen, the place is not too bad. Non smoking (bedroom capsule) floor although some of the smell does go through the ventilation system. Public bath, very hot jacuzzi and dry sauna. There is also a non smoking rest area. Free wifi included.

 

Whatever you choose, hope you have a good time - wish I was going with you! .

I checked the website for Naked Men New Year's Party. It's a party where attendees are expected to be half naked and foreigners get a discount for entry. 

If you have a six pack, you will get a further discount. Too bad I don't have a six pack.

 

It does sound tempting but I'll need to do a lot of cardio before I fly to Japan so that I'll look leaner.

 

I'm not really a fan of capsule hotels but I'll consider Oriental Sauna. It looks like it's in central Ueno which is quite good.
