Tokyo / Fukuoka / Sapporo (Japan ) - Massage / Sauna / Places To Visit (Compiled)

There's a truth in it, but not entirely. I went a few times to this bar called Keivi in Shibuya. Most of the times I could strike a convo with fellow customers in English. Off course i have to speak slowly and show much respect, hence they wouldnt be too 'scared' to talk back to me.

Btw it's snowing again today but luckily not that serious to disrupt transport, only causing a bit train delay. Ccch-coold! Better prepare boots for those coming these days. And Tokyo Marathon is just next weekend.

Thanks Doddy. Do you live in Tokyo or are you visiting?

Actually what I meant is that there is a difference between people like Darkflame and me/us in that he can speak Japanese and therefore can carry on a meaningful conversation with the locals.  I mean I can probably carry on a conversation with the locals too but it would be limited to the "Hello, how are you?" and "Where are you from?" and "What do you do for a living?" kind. I am assuming that Darkflame can (I dont know if he has) go more levels deeper (and I dont mean physically ;) ) and tackle such subjects like "What is it like being gay in Japan, workwise, socially, etc?" and "What are your plans for the future? Are you going to still explore your gay self?" etc.

I am told that Japanese guys explore their gay nature when they are in their mid 20's to early 30's and then after they are in their late 50's.  In between, they get married and have kids, irrespective of how they feel about being gay. This is because if they are not married, their work suffers i.e. they are not promoted. When they get to their late 50's is when they no longer worry, about job prospects and where their children have grown up (and maybe left home), so they feel no threats and can give way to their gay nature again. If you look at the crowd in 24KK, this seems to be supported.

I find the bars a better experience than 24 KK or saunas.

At least Japanese gay bar culture is not as clique-ish as Singapore if it's those dainty, quiet bars.

Do your research and choose your bar carefully.  Rentals for space are brutal so their business model is niche. Most are so small they only can seat a dozen regulars. If you go into a place for example catering for over 35 karaoke, you might be wasting their space if you don't spend like their regulars. The "Master" (bartender) is obligated to entertain you (Japanese courtesy) whether he wants to or not, and provide snacks, conversation in Japanese, and sometimes a small meal. .. Customers must be polite whether they want you there or not. Someone might be happy to walk you in bitter cold winter to another more suitable bar if you've wandered into the wrong one. Go ahead and try whatever but it may not be as wonderful for everyone as it seems!

I always was with a Japanese-speaking friend in those bars, but I discovered that many Japanese can speak English, and often better than me (which is not difficult, ok...).

And they are quite friendly with us, poor gaijin... ^_^

Of course, guest above is right: you have to spend like their regulars if the bar is crowded.

It's a different experience from saunas, but both are interesting.

So far, I'm pretty glad nobody told me to leave the bar because my body type didn't fit that bar.

I tried my luck by entering a bar for people above 30s and thankfully I was still welcome there. (Got to know about the bar and its type from gclick.jp)

The only time I felt like I wasted their space was at Townhouse at Shimbashi because it was so crowded due to Friday night and the theme was appreciation of men in their 30s.

During this recent trip to Japan, the only time I reached on a closer level with Japanese gays was at Utsunomiya since I came from 'some country far more south than Taiwan' and they were curious to know how gay life was like in Singapore.

I told them about the 377A saga though. lol

Guest italian guest

does anyone know if this place is good?

http://kids-jp.com/tokyo/

Hello to everyone,

I've been there last august. Went there at noon without booking, i've rang the doorbell, welcomed by a receptionist boy who drove me in a nice room, chosen on tablet one of these boys (paid one hour: 13.000 Y) who arrived in a few minutes, and spent with him very good time (shower, hugs, bj, f***, whatever). Very clean and safe. Btw, i'm Italian, over 50, don't speak Jap, No problems.

I received the left flyer from a cute guy distributing it. If anyone's coming here and interested in attending the machikon next sat, it's around Nakano station. The group will probably gather at the station exit first.
Machikon = matchmaking getting to know you party where you go around restaurants/bars located on a street, dine in groups, mingle with the people, make friends.
This is a eat-and-drink-all-you-can (3 & a 1/2 hrs) event for guys (4900 yen each) in their 20s/30s to know other guys. Gays and bi. It doesn't say anything about no foreigners so no harm joining if you're interested.

I suspect it's not closed off so you can even go there and loiter around see if there's any cute guys, without paying lol.

Not sure what the 2nd one occurring this 8th march about. Took this from a shop. It says men nude show at the top so i guess it is. Can google for the location if interested.

The details are here → http://blog.livedoor.jp/n_stage/archives/52142140.html

Dear all,

I'll be travelling to Tokyo in May. Its my first trip and supposedly I'm going with a friend, but said friend flew my aeroplane, which means I'll be alone there. Perhaps anyone who's going during the same period can meet up? =)

My travelling dates are May 3 to May 11.

Tokyo where got gay sauna?

I will be going there for holiday any time, alone.

is there alot sauna, like chinatown, a stretch of road got few. Or few gay pubs?

Any recommendation? best is beside a cheap hotel, alot of shopping.

Reason i going is bcas i won an air-ticket.

Gay saunas etc are located in these areas:

Shinjuku Ni-chome - most gay bars and clubs are located here with 24 Kaikan Shinjuku (sauna)

Ueno - 24 Kaikan Ueno is here and many gay bars gathering for mature men are here

Asakusa - 24 Kaikan Asakusa is here with another sauna called Oban; gay bars for elderly men are here

Takadanobaba - one sauna is here

Shimbashi - one gay bar open to foreigners

To get to Shinjuku Ni-chome, get off at Shinjuku Sanchome station. It's the nearest to the district.

thank u for the recommendation. But are all the places nearby each other? just like Chinatown, got few of it.

Or its located at different area. And Shinjuku is part of tokyo?

No, not nearby each other. Both in Tokyo but Tokyo is a huge city. Shinjuku is in the East and Ueno is in West. There is a 24 Kaikan in Shinjuku too but that is mainly for twinks, my opinion. The train ride between Shinjuku and Ueno is about 30 to 40 minutes. Go read up and research - it is relatively easy to travel in Tokyo but you need to read up about it as it is a large city and if you dont know what you want to do or where you want to go, you will waste a lot of time.

Wise advice!

But when I was young, Shinjuku was West and Ueno East/Northeast; maybe things have changed... ^_^

Anyway, they have an efficient underground system.

Have a nice stay!

Considering that Ikebukuro is the 'Chinatown' of Tokyo, there are more Chinese people there and I heard there are gay friendly saunas too.

Not too sure about Chinatown in Yokohama though.

I didnt go haiz. nobody to go with and too ex for me LOL probably would end up sipping tea in one corner

All parts of Tokyo (at least those I know) are pleasant!

But there are excellent Japanese tea shops and restaurants in Paris too...

And, sorry, but what does "so desu neh" means?

Its an expression sort of loosely translated to "Thats right, isnt it?" or the simpler form "Right, you are".  I have heard my friends and colleagues use it when acknowleding what the other party is saying, much as we would use "Yeah" and "Right" when hearing someone and when encouraging the person to continue speaking.

Paris? Excellent Japanese tea shops and restaurants? Ok, the 6 million dollar question then is if there is a good Japanese (PLU) Sauna there? :)

Thanks a lot for those explanations. My Japanese is quite poor...

I'm afraid we have no "Japanese" gay sauna here. If you are thinking of 24 kaikan Ueno or even Asakusa, they have set a high level standard in my opinion.

But we have some good "French" ones, and you can even meet Japanese guys sometimes... ;)

Actually I think "sou desu ne" can also be used to mean "let me think". Which to the Japanese would mean no since they don't like saying no directly sometimes.

So it probably depends on how it's used. そうですね!or そうですね…

Wow , dark flame that's a whole load of valuable info !. Thanks !

But can you please give details ?

Can you do a map and or addresses with clear directions ?

I've been to oban in shinjuku , years ago but I heard it now has a racist policy ie japs only .

I think I found the oban in ueno but as I don't speak japanese I wasn't allowed in .

Where is takadanababa ? What's the sauna there like ?

Any more info on the bars or mature guys ?

Thanks

そうですね is like an expression to answer someone, especially when you agree with someone or you want to tell him that what he said is quite true.

For example,

Foreigner: Is Shinjuku 2-chome the gay district?

Japanese: はい、そうですね。(He is agreeing with you.)

Foreigner: I think most Japanese love gaijin, right?

Japanese: そうですね。。。(He thinks what you said might be true.)

The opposite of そうですね is そうですか which is used to respond to someone else when you learn something new (in the development of the conversation). It's closer to how we use, 'I see.'

Foreigner: I think I will head home now.

Japanese: そうですか。

Takadanobaba is a station on the Yamanote line, few stops north of Shinjuku.

I heard the sauna there has masquerade nights but it's quite a small place.

I didn't know Oban has a racist policy.

Perhaps there were too many foreigners causing trouble so they decide to restrict the place to Japanese.

But in terms of the language, many bars (straight or gay) also enforce a Japanese language condition for entry.

The saunas might be the ones who will go the extra length to bar entry to non-Japanese people, whether they speak the language or not.

I didn't mention that on my last trip in January, I visited a bar in Asakusa.

The mature men are good to talk with.

They also know to respect boundaries so they will only pursue someone romantically if he's within the age range.

And on an interesting note, the mature guys who can speak English do speak it very well compared to the current generation who are obsessed with English learning due to Hollywood & US dramas.

Actually I have never been to the one at Takadanobaba.

I only know about its details from the website and hearsay.

I have also never been to Oban.

When I first passed it (when I was heading to my hotel at Asakusa), I thought of it as a general sauna although it had the vibes of a gay sauna.

I confirmed it with some people at a gay pub at Shinjuku 2-chome that it was a sauna but mainly for elderly guys.

Saunas are not like those in Singapore where young people are also there to cruise.

In fact, I read a few good reviews by Japanese tourists who visited gay saunas here. (some couldn't even speak much English so they were very brave!)

Personally, if you are still relatively young, I think 24 Kaikan Shinjuku will just do.

You can go there after you have a wild night at Dragon Men or Arty Farty/Annex!

Sorry slightly off topic here but I dont think there is a Paris thread. Perhaps you can start one, Phil, and post lots of pics. Who knows, if the pics are interesting enough, you might attract people who will potentially end up drinking tea with you, in Paris!  But hmm... I had coffee next to the Notre Dame and it cost me around $20!!

I'm not sure at all to be the best expert about Paris gay life. And all that needs time...

But I'll try to answer (if I can) any question.

Sorry for the cost of your coffee; Notre-Dame is an area which attracts tourists. And generally, the prices are the same for Parisians! ;)

Back to the topic, a drink in some gay bars in Tokyo can cost you an arm. But they are so nice!

I stayed at Hotel New Tochigiya. It was next door to a bar called Susumu, which was a bar for mature men.

The owner was surprised to see me and knew I was a foreigner since no young Japanese guy would enter his bar.

Mid 40s is still quite a young age in Asakusa.

The bar customers were 50+ and over.

Your age is still okay for pubbing at Shinjuku Ni-chome or Townhouse @ Shimbashi.

Actually I like to explore the less glamorous side of tokyo , away from ni chrome if only just to observe .

I once went into an venue , thinking it was a 24 sauna , went inside and there was no one there .

Waited and then I could hear people in closed off rooms surrounding the bar .

A younger guy came out if nowhere and sat at bar counter.

Then a man came out ...I asked him if this was 24 kai kan ..in broken japanese ...to his amusement he said no and led me to the 24 kai kan asakusa ... Which was a shocker for me as it was not my scene ...trannys etc...

Think thats what I call the 24 Kaikan bar. I think it is a fundoshi bar operated by the same owner who owns 24 Kaikan Asakusa and is sort of around the corner from it. I went in there too and was totally confused initially as it was small and did not look like the entrance to a sauna at all. Very certainly other people have made the same mistake before as the bar tender was able to tell me that the place was not what I was looking for and was able to tell me that 24 Kaikan Asakusa was around the corner, not too far away. All without speaking any Japanese at all! BTW, the fundoshi bar is supposed to have this area in the back where people 'have fun' :).

I did not find Hibiya park very cruisy at night. Maybe during daytime?

Lots of men in suits around Kasumigaseki, but I'm not sure it's the best place to try your luck...

Why don't you try 24 kaikan Ueno?

Speaking of which, I messaged Andy quite a while ago but there wasn't any reply.

Looks like he found his new life in Tokyo.  ;)

For some weird reason, many Singaporeans I know who have gone to Japan have gone offline.

They hardly post on Facebook or even talk on Whatsapp.

I wonder if it is a habit to do so or is the Internet that limited in Japan.

Some people have all the fun !!
