Mind to share your experience in Arty Farty?

We simply had a few round of drinks, chatted and danced.

And saw many young Japanese boys high on the dance floor, with one relatively muscular guy getting topless.

Ironically, this topless guy looked like another guy at Taboo who also goes topless when he's there.

When my boyfriend and I were holidaying in Japan particularly in Tokyo for a first time, We encountered a racist restaurant, the person who manned the restaurant did not want us to be there when We asked for a table. This experience had made us to think of Japan is still not that open at all to foreigners who don't speak Japanese whilst they want to boost touristm sector to help the sluggish economy. Is it still a common practice in Japan not to allow foreigners in some restaurants?

We took a walk in Ni-Chome area on a weekday, it was deserted as we strolled along there was Advocates Cafe which an open air gay bar seemed it has more Western customers than locals, couldn't find the famous Art Farty bar only saw The Dragon Men signage.

Actually Osaka and the rest of Kansai have a vibrant gay scene too.

I think if you move back a few pages, you'd find the mention about Osaka gay bars.

But in general, Osaka people are better than Tokyo people in terms of 'humanness'.

There are 2 types of 'racist Japanese'. One is the tolerant kind who do not want to serve foreigners because they know they cannot give the best service due to the language barrier.

Japanese are essentially 'black and white' people so it's either they give you the best service or don't serve you.

However, Japanese are still people so your mileage may vary.

As for the other kind of Japanese, they are indeed the downright 'racist' kind and are usually extreme right wing supporters. It's rare for such people to own restaurants.

Normally, such people would be in the 'darker' end such as bars, host clubs etc.

And although there is mention of 'tourism sector to help the sluggish economy', many Japanese businesses think they can rely on domestic demand to survive. And they do.

Normally, people who can't find a way to compete with their fellow Japanese will turn to the international market.

Arty Farty is not as open concept as Dragon Men so you need to look out for the sign. Advocates Cafe is a popular place for white guys because foreigners also promote the place since the people at the bar can speak English. There are good bars all over Nichome but I can say that 95% require some form of Japanese. If language is an issue, just follow Utopia Asia's recommendation.

Otherwise, Taipei may be a much friendlier place than Tokyo with the less opaque language barrier.

Hi darkflame san,

Arigatou gozaimasu for your reply. We could be picked the that particular restaurant that do not allow any Gai-jin since We cannot read and speak Japanese, We didn't have a clue about it..The waitress who turned us away was not polite either. It was certainly unpleasant and disconcerting for a first timer like us especially when We weren't or least expecting it although We had read about these kind of racist attitude towards Gai-jin posted on the internet.

I am kinda curious how far is Arty Farty from Advocates Cafe? We were quite tired from walking all day that night so after a few blocks in Ni-Chome decided to head back to our hotel in Shinjuku. Is the Shinjuku San-Chome on Tokyo Metro Line the closest to these gay bars?

August is probably the hottest month in Tokyo and not an ideal time to visit. A better time would be from October to November when it is cooler.

If you dislike hot weather already in Singapore, I would advise you to avoid July & August as these are the peak summer months in Japan.

To escape the summer heat, many people even in Japan run north to Hokkaido.

If you are a fan of cool weather, just spend a few days in Tokyo and the rest in Hokkaido.

Based on my experience for accommodation, these are the following:

1. Shinjuku/Shibuya - near to the main action, but prices aren't very cheap

2. Ueno/Asakusa - probably one of the cheapest places to stay but it's quite a distance from the 'fun' area

3. Ikebukuro - cheap place and near to Shinjuku/Shibuya but many many PRC here

4. Roppongi - good place to stay if you are particular about language barrier; many foreigners stay here and the locals can speak English here as well

Gay heart of Tokyo is Shinjuku Nichome but don't expect too much.

So far most people I brought to Nichome are quite disappointed in it as I guess they were expecting something as vibrant as Taipei.

For clubs, bars, saunas and massage parlours, I'd say to look at Utopia Asia unless you can converse in Japanese.

I didn't bring some friends to the usual bars because of the language barrier so I'd take them to Dragon Men or Arty Farty.

Japanese bars are not like Singapore gay bars where they blast music as part of the ambience.

There is still music but conversation is highly valued in the gay bar in Tokyo.

Actually it would be more surprising to have such restaurants around Tokyo these days.

Japan has globalised quite a lot for the past ten years.

Previously, you could never even expect foreigners to be working in the frontline of the company but it's very common now.

Personally, I don't prefer to speak Mandarin in public because it leaves a bad taste with 'locals who can't understand the concept of foreigners'.

This is a direct translation from Japanese.

Arty Farty is like only around the corner from Advocates Cafe.

And you are right, Shinjuku Sanchome station is the nearest to Nichome.

However, Shinjuku Sanchome is a huge station so I'd say the Shinjuku line platform is the nearest.

Hello everyone! Just came back from Japan yesterday after about two (2) weeks of vacation. I went to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara,Tokyo & Ueno. I've got some updates on Ueno Park and how are the activities there right now. Yes, it is still very cruisy especially on weekdays when it starts to get dark. Most of those guys avoiding the rush hour commute after work would venture into the park for some quick blowjobs or handjobs. I managed to fuck two (2) 30+ guys in their office suits! Hahaha. Well, I almost fucked five (5) guys if I gave in to their request to fuck them raw. I'm surprised how come most japanese guys are not scared to get fucked without condom. I couldn't take the risk..so I politely declined the three (3) of them. Not sure if you already knew but that flat small area on top of the hill is already well-lit and really bright at night. Most guys would prefer to have some fun by that fence near the police station. However, majority of the guys would convene at that dark area under the trees behind the bushes opposite the hill near the road leading to the entrance of the park (close to that small temple). I've noticed that most Japanese men in that area are not keen on having fun with a foreigner. They show some interests when they first see me (maybe they think I'm Japanese) but the moment they speak to me in Japanese and responded in English, their interest would suddenly fade away and just move on to other japanese guys. Those two(2) fucks I had were all done and completed without saying a word! Hahahaha. Japanese men are really yummy! Even those homeless guys sleeping at the park at night would really fancy your taste especially if you are into mature men. One japanese man who can fairly speak simple english asked me if I like older japanese men because Ueno Park is known to be cruising area for mature men (like men in their 50's & 60's). He told me that if I like younger guys, I should go to Shinjuku area.

Just a word of caution for everyone. Please be very careful when you cruise at the Ueno Park because the policemen will patrol the area frequently throughout the night. I think they are already aware of what is happening there. To be honest, I almost got caught while walking up & down that small hill! Hahaha.

And lastly, I also visited that adult theatre near the Ueno Park. If not because of that friendly english-speaking japanese guy, I wouldn't know about that theatre. He said that this theatre only operates once a month from night 'till morning the day after. I was lucky that while I was there, the theatre was opened. The ticket costs 500 Yen. The theatre was small compared to that adult theatre in Bangkok but the seats are nice though. I was shocked when I entered that theatre. It's so packed with older men (some of them are really, really old already). No one pays attention to the movie because there is sucking, kissing, fondling & fucking everywhere. Even if it's quite bright inside, nobody could be bothered about it. Everyone is just doing their business. It's kinda weird that those super old guys are still active cruisers! I admire their energy! Hehehe. I got a nice blow job from this 40 something guy while I was leaning against the theatre's entrance door while 2 other men are sucking each of my nipples! Hahaha. I suspect that most of those men in that theatre are not residing around Ueno area because the crowd had thinned down when it was already approaching midnight. Maybe most would catch the last train back home. I didn't stay long enough because I had an early morning flight back to Singapore the morning after.

By the way, there is also a cruisy park (especially after midnight) near Osaka. The park is called Sakuranomiya Park which is just opposite the Osaka Loop Line Sakuranomiya station. I also explored that area and fucked one (1) guy under the bridge by the river! And because I had to go their at midnight, I had to take a really expensive cab ride back to my hotel at Shin-Osaka. Sakuranomiya Park was bigger & darker compared to Ueno Park but there were only about 2-3 cruisers while I was there. Well, maybe because it was drizzling a bit that time.

I think I'll schedule another Japan trip and explore more. :-) Please keep everyone posted also when discover any new cruisy places.

Usually things happen when you least expect it.

If you follow recent Singapore news there's growing sentiment towards Foreign Talents so may be Japan also suffers from the same sentiment you think? My partner is an Ang Mo if that may have caused Us being turned away from a restaurant?

Personally, I don't prefer to speak Mandarin in public because it leaves a bad taste with 'locals who can't understand the concept of foreigners'.

Do Japanese people may find it rude if you speak other languages in public?

We couldn't see it, perhaps it was a quite weekday's night and not many people so it's hard to spot. We actually walked from Shinjuku station to NI-Chome.

It's very hard to determine why you received such 'racist sentiment' from Japanese people. There are a few reasons behind it but none may be true.

a. They perceive you as a Japanese who loves to hang out with foreigners i.e. ang moh. For some Japanese, this is an utter disgrace to Japanese society because many of such Japanese (usually women) are stuck up.

b. You may also appear non-Japanese so the Japanese perceived you and your partner as foreigners and hence feel inept to give you the best service due to the language barrier.

Most Japanese see the outside world via the US so they feel they can communicate with foreigners just like what they see in the movies i.e. they sound rude as a result.

Japanese don't find it rude if you speak other languages in public, but for Chinese and Korean, it leaves a very bad taste in their mind.

As for other languages, Japanese cannot accept it if you look like them or is East Asian because you are not supposed to speak that language.

Japanese cannot accept that Japanese Americans or Japanese Brazilians don't speak Japanese as their first language. Even overseas Japanese are discriminated against.

A weekday in Nichome is very very quiet. Usually this is the best time to strike up a conversation at a bar.

Well I had been asked if I am Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Singaporean, etc by some random people..lol.

Is it because of the past history of atrocities committed by the Japanese towards the Chinese and Koreans before WWII, hence leaves a bad taste in their mind?

Ok, now a got a picture about Japanese society. Thanks once again for your replies.

Patisoy,

Besides the adult cinema and parks, did you visit any gay sauna e.g. 24 Kaikan?:

Honestly, I don't like gay saunas whether here in Singapore or abroad. It's like a buffet of cocks with no thrill anymore.

I like venturing into cruisy places to meet strangers. My fetish are regular men who like to be wooed for fun :-)

Yah, you can request for roaming but I think it is better to get a local data sim card.

That's a very long period you will be in Japan, almost close to a month.

Will the whole period be for leisure?

Go to places before the New Year. Things will be fun.

And as mentioned, you can visit places after 3 Jan since some restaurants/shops will open but usually many places shut down for at least a week.

If you are still in Japan for the second Monday of the month, you can visit a shrine to see a Coming-of-Age ceremony.

The temperature in the day is around 9 degrees on a sunny day but it will hardly rain in Tokyo during winter.

This also means the weather will be dry so you need to moisturise.

Best time to climb a tower to see Mount Fuji in the background.

At night the temperature will fall to 0 degrees and sometimes -1 degrees but it won't feel that cold unless the wind blows.

Tokyo is still essentially a warmer city than Seoul or Beijing in winter.

Anyone can advise whether the air tix is cheap if its around 1k to 1.2k? lol

tempted to buy so i can go around mid December. ^_^^_^^_^

thanks!

I bought my ticket which was about 600+ from scoot. SQ had a sale previously which was an average of 700+ but u have to travel at least 2 passengers.

For the end of the year, prices are quite jacked up at this point since SQ would be reserving seats for NATAS.

You can choose to book early or take a gamble and wait until close to end of the year.

1k is considered expensive.

At the very most, 900 should be the limit of reasonably priced tickets.

280 - 400: usually budget air i.e. AirAsia and Scoot on promotion

400 - 700: usually regular airlines offer this range for good promotions i.e. rarely SQ, Cathay Pacific, Delta & United

700 - 950: the moderate price usually ANA, JAL and more than often SQ

above 950: expensive and should redeem with mileage than pay for all

Thank you thank you! I don't want to transit so I think either JAL or SQ is the best choice right now. But it is just so expensive!! Arghhhhh and also I am planning my itinerary right now. Can I allocate one day just to explore odiba??? I was looking at the picture and that Fuji Tv building reminded me of digimon season 1. xd

Actually these are the direct flights;

SQ

JAL

ANA

United

Delta

For the last two airlines, they are in a way 'transit flights', but the first stopover after SG is Tokyo usually.

So if you are dropping off at Tokyo, you can get it cheap sometimes.

Ideally, one day is good for Odaiba. There are many things to do at Odaiba.

1. Fuji TV HQ

2. Giant Gundam

3. Eating good food

4. Shopping

5. Nice scenery to walk along

Bring more clothing in December because the winds can be strong and very cold, especially at the waterfront like Odaiba.
