I am sure you have phoned darkflame-san to make sure he is well too. When you said that you were woken by alerts from iphones, does this mean you were sleeping in a place where there were lots of iphones? Like what you would get in 24 Kaikan? . On a more serious note, the buildings in Japan are relatively well built. In Fukushima 2011, the deaths were from the resulting tsunami, not from the actual collapse of buildings. Guest Catfish
There is a iPhone app for Japan that will sound alarm when the scientists detect that an earthquake is about to strike within the next few minutes. He was woken up by the app's alarm. I also activate the app whenever I am travelling to Japan. You can download it too, if you wish to see how it works. You will be alerted when there is a earthquake in Japan.

darkflame
Today's expedition to Mt. Takao was fun, especially after typhoon Neoguri passed over Tokyo. The weather was really sunny. It's just damn damn far from my place in Chiba.I was on the train from 11.42am to 1.40pm, considering that I took mainly express trains. Initially I thought Mt. Takao would mainly be for locals, but there were many tourists there. Was thinking to travel japan during Sakura period which near end of march 2015. A bit worried on communication problem there. Communication is not an issue if you are visiting the big cities, especially Tokyo. There are bilingual signboards and some stations have an English support corner that doubles up as the JR Pass exchange office.Preferably, you should seek advice at the airport first as that is the first level of English support you can get.On top of that, if you are going to book a hotel via Hotel.com, agoda.com or Expedia, the hotel staff should be able to speak English. For most services, you can point to show the staff what you want e.g. food, drink, club etc. But I can assure you, as someone who doesn't speak Japanese, you will get good service most of the time.Knowing too much is never a good thing. Good to know that you are safe Doddy-san. Now I know why I got the message from Doddy about the quake.Regarding the alert, my phone was equipped with a notification service so it would make a very loud noise seconds before the quake occurs.True enough, my phone rang early in the morning and after I checked the phone, the ground began to shake. The quake wasn't very strong for me.However, considering that Doddy lives on a higher floor than me, the quake could be more impactful for him.My area is more prone to typhoons though. Then shinjuku, no more than that I know about japan. Haha I will build on guest's recommendation to recommend stuff to you.Actually, when you arrive at Narita, go to the visitor's corner and you can take a few brochures on good recommendations for your first time to Tokyo.Essentially, the best guide to Tokyo is not me, but a local, so getting advice from a local is always best. Go do some research lah Calvin or read this thread from the start. There is so much depending on what you want to do. Google for each topic and read up.HarajukuShibuyaGinzaUenoAsakusaAkihabaraOdaiba Harajuku/Shibuya - this area is usually covered within 1/2 or 1 day and usually together because they are within walking distance; additionally you can also visit Omotesando which has many beautiful buildings constructed by the high end brands e.g. LV, Prada etcHarajuku is only famous for Takeshita street so you would be satisfied by walking along that street Ginza/Odaiba - these two can usually be covered in one set; Ginza in the day and Odaiba in the late afternoon and night (because the night view at Odaiba is beautiful); Ginza is only good for department stores if you really love shopping for one, the only good one is the 7-storey Uniqlo main store where you can get a good collection of clothing (and may have summer clothing because this store is catered for an international crowd), no issue with language because they hire multilingual staff at this shop- if you are really free after that, you can drop by a gay bar at Shimbashi called Townhouse; they have good events on Friday nights Ueno/Asakusa/Akihabara - can be combined into one full day due to proximity; morning at Asakura, noon at Ueno and afternoon at AkihabaraAsakusa is only famous for Sensoji (temple) and usually it's best to go in the morning; you can get good souvenirs at Nakamise Street which lines up to the temple; breakfast can be cheap here with set meals at 500 yenUeno is good only for Ueno park during sakura season and Ameyoko street which sells really cheap stuff but if you are already shopping in Japan, you'd want quality stuff and Ameyoko is too touristy now; prices are cheap here so it's worth a good lunchAkihabara - best to go from afternoon because shops open here quite late, around 10 or 11am; there are likely brochures at the station and worth going only if you really anime/manga, otherwise you will be bored out here* after the shops close, you can still head to Ueno park to cruise if you want* if you are done with Asakusa real fast, you can try to squeeze in going to Tokyo Skytree which is a short distance from Asakusa; entrance fee is 3500 yen, some staff cannot speak English so they might hand you a sheet to point out what you want Additional places not mentioned:Shinjuku - instead of paying a premium to go up Tokyo Tower or Tokyo Skytree, just head to Shinjuku and for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building where you can go up to the viewing gallery for free (locals call it Tocho/都庁)- Kabukicho is worth only one walk through only- Nichome is nearby so you can use your map to check or ask a local; just say Nichome or display 二丁目 to them Ikebukuro - one of the cheapest places for hotels and also the Chinatown of Tokyo; you will hear Mandarin everywhere you go in this district- restaurants and shops may be used to Chinese people staying around so you will have no issue speaking Mandarin here Yokohama - worth a day trip if you like to see the port; Asia's largest Chinatown is also located here Quote I'm always running after you. calvin87
Yes. Indeed. Thanks for all the information. Really help a lot. Usually, $2500 enough for the whole trip, let say 5 days? Just a normal spending and just want explore Tokyo. Sorry for asking those stupid question.
doddysapta
It's never a stupid question. In fact it's good to bring it up.I would say it really really really depends on your planning & preferences. In 2009, i travelled to Tokyo, Nikko, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Himeji & Hiroshima (incl Miyajima island) for 10 days, flew sin-nrt return with SQ promo tix and used the JR Weekly Pass for land transfer, all i spent was SGD2000 (excluding gifts for people back home). Today i believe JPY is lower to SGD so you'll get more than I did then. I lived quiet frugal though. I stayed at friends for 4 nights, then stayed at backpacker dorms for the rest. Which i was glad as I could meet & exchanged notes with other travellers. For breakfasts & lunches I bought food from convenient stores, only treated myself restaurant meal for dinners. My bible was Lonely Planet and plenty of online research. Pity i didnt know darkflame then, maybe i could maximize the budget more Hope that answer your question
calvin87
Yes of cos. Some idea for me. Every time I was thinking budgetary by staying dorm but due to I will snoring for the beginning when sleep. So I feel embarrassing if want to stay at dorm. So I have no choice to opt for a single room which will cost me more n much.
Guest Guest
+-$2K is quite alright. I stayed in a single room for about less than $80 per night for 8 nights, airfare about $700. Assume you spend $50 per day for transport, food and entry fees. Another $300 for other micellaneous stuff. That makes up to +-$2K.
calvin87
Usually which airline you all take? SQ is just too expensive. So left only MAS and CX

Enelym1978
You can try Scoot but their timings are not always convenient... same with JetStar. I fly SQ, CX, DL or NH, look out for their promo. Especially CX with UOB cards. And I prefer Haneda to NRT.... much more convenient and also cheaper to/from Tokyo. Usually (cheapest fares usually found) : TZ: $550 via TPECX: $600 via HKGVN: $600 via HAN/SGNTG: $600 via BKKMU: $600 via PVGAK: $600 via DMK/KULCZ: $750 via CANJQ: $780 via KIX Then you have the direct flights:DL: $625JL: $970UA: $970NH: $970and the best for the end lolSQ: $1270 But I'm sure you can catch cheaper fares when they have special promos. It's all a matter of how much you're willing to save by doing a detour (some connections take forever, be careful....). darkflame
Based on my past few trips before I moved to Tokyo, these are my feedback on the various costs: Airfare - gonna set you back depending on which airline you fly with; Scoot can be as pricey as a regular airline during promotions. It is good for business class or if you need to book an urgent flight. The transit is still not too bad compared to other airlines. For Cathay Pacific, I sacrificed the extra money to take an earlier connecting flight, causing me to sleep over at the airport but it was quite an interesting experience, meeting a handsome Vietnamese guy whose email address was hotboy28 or something and this Kenyan reporter waiting for his flight home from HK Transport within Japan - the JR pass will set you back a lot at 28,500 yen so if you intend to get it, you had better plan to maximise it by taking Shinkansen and limited expresses; if you are staying within Tokyo only, consider Kanto Area Pass or Tokyo Metro Pass that can get you around many places at a better priceAlso Japan has many different railway companies, however, interchanging from one railway company to another will mean you have to pay much more than interchanging between lines belong to the same railway company. JR is the largest company and also has the largest outreach and is considered middle of the road in prices. Special lines built to connect to a certain place will cost a lot more while private railways linking to the suburbs are dirt cheap for long distances.Basically, if you are going to a certain place, try to stick to the same railway company to stretch your dollar. Alternatively, if you are just going from one city to another e.g. Tokyo & Osaka, budget air may be a better option like Vanilla Air or Peach Air. Recently, Peach Air has an English website so there should be no issue. The return flight fare is half of the JR pass, considering the intercity travel between Tokyo & Osaka. Accommodation - it really depends on where you want to stay; if you love Shinjuku so much, be prepared to fork out much unless you are fine with a capsule. Some places can go down as 4000 yen per night per person. My hotel at Asakusa was 3500 yen per night with toilet and room service (single). To stretch your dollar, avoid landing on late nights though most available SQ flights to Haneda usually land around 11. If you do land late, consider sacrificing one night at a capsule. One late night at 24 Kaikan is 2900 for 12 hour so unless your hotel is really twice that price, it isn't so worth much on saving. You will also need to put your bigger luggage overnight at a train station which probably charges 300 yen per night. Food - actually this should be the least concern because food isn't really that expensive as the rumour goes. If you have expensive tastes, the food expenses will be high. This is the level of food prices.250 - 500 yen - your equivalent to hawker food in SG; food can be delicious, many booths like Matsuya, Yoshinoya, Sukiya, Chikara-meshi, Nakau, Hidakaya etc (most orders are vending machine operated)600 - 1200 yen - your usual eatery depending on what you eat; for a standard Japanese local, anything above 900 yen is considered not moderately priced already1300 - 2200 yen - the JP answer to Jack's Place, Manhattan Fish Market kind of prices; same feel3000 yen and above - usually buffets or high end restaurants; premium sushi can also reach that level*these are compared against Singapore's cost of living; a Malaysian once told me he can only eat instant noodles there 2009? In 2009, darkflame-san was still in secondary school lah doddy-san ... Actually I was already in university in 2009.... Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me. Enelym1978
I stayed at the Sunlite Shinjuku back in March 2014 and paid S$141 all in. No breakfast but free wifi. Suuuuper simple rooms though and you have to leave the key at the front desk when you step out.... old school hotel. But of course clean and functional. Bathroom was tiny as well.... Staying in Shinjuku is quite expensive... you can try the Ibis Shinjuku. Sometimes has good rates. It's just next to the main Shinjuku station. Keio Plaza is quite expensive and if you get a room in the old wing, it's not worth the money. Sunroute is not bad. Small-ish rooms but enough if you're a solo traveler. Walking distance to the station and walkable to Ni-chome (20-30min walk depending on your pace I would say). Another time I stayed at the Citadines hotel. This is also walking distance from Ni-chome but on the other side so it's more quiet with less food or shopping options. But the studios are quite big. All the above can be found as low as S$150 except Keio Plaza. I think that's all for those I tried on personal trips. If you have more $$$, then I can recommend the Hilton Shinjuku or a bit cheaper, the Hyatt Regency ($300 and $220 respectively).

darkflame
Since I don't give enough information about bars and clubs, here goes one to compensate.Yesterday I attended Muscle Beach @ ageHa.As some of you may know, ageHa is something like Zouk in Singapore but on a much bigger scale.Every quarter there is a gay event held there. Since nobody was interested and I was a foreigner nonetheless, I decided to head there alone.Doors open at only 11 PM and last trains usually run around 12.30 AM so the expectation is that you got to 'ton' the night. The first train is around 5AM so if you are really tired, you could just hang out there till 4.45AM before heading to the train station to wait for your first train. The event premises doesn't look very impressive. It's called Studio Coast with the event name called ageHa.When I arrived there at 10.50 pm, it wasn't very crowded until I realised many people were waiting all over the area and they started to form a super long queue. The cover charge is 4000 yen, but you get further discounts if you have a 9monsters account or if you are younger.I had a 9monsters account so my cover charge was 3000 yen. This cover charge is just the entrance fee and does not include any drinks so if you don't intend to really drink much or open bottles, 10,000 yen will just do.There is even an ATM in the club so that you can withdraw money. Even at the club, credit card isn't as popular as cold hard cash. At the main bar area, the gogoboys resembled objects of worship. One gogoboy flexed his muscles as I took his photo with my phone.Maybe he recognised me because I added him to favourites in 9monsters and he sent me a like. You can take photos with the gogoboys if you are daring enough.Too bad I was alone so I couldn't get someone to take my photo. ageHa doesn't practise the 'chop on arm' thing, which means once you exit the premises, you can't re-enter.To compensate for that, they have a food area so that you can eat something to dilute your drunkenness. Fundoshi area. You need to wear a fundoshi to go in but if you didn't bring any or have none, they sell it too.I have no idea how much it cost because I was not interested in wearing a fundoshi. Not like I have the bearish body for it. If you have a 9monsters account and you reached gold status as a member, your tweet will appear on the screen. Otherwise, it won't be shown.Few foreigners get to gold status, except Taiwanese of course. The giant area to dance, just like at Zouk or Zirca. It's 2-3 times bigger than Zouk and that is only the dance floor. The DJ specially flew in from LA. (Hot ang moh) Oh, and half of the guys on the dance floors were topless. The topless guys formed a long train with skin and sweat mixing. Most of the topless guys had great bodies anyway so it wasn't a problem. But just like Singapore, guys in Japan are shy so they won't suddenly hit on you and hug you while dancing. The same old tactic of getting close to you and trying to touch your bare skin continuously. Gogoboy on the platform. There's a segment where they strip off their undies and cover it with a loin cloth. One naughty gogoboy let the person pull his undies off.And if you really like the gogoboy, you can tip him by putting yen notes into his underwear.I feel sinful for wanting to also put money into his underwear.Looks like I'm becoming a dirty old man too. There is a section where you can dance around a pool. This pool is not for swimming and just to emulate the 'clubbing around a pool' experience. There are also different themed areas. For guys who are horned up, there's the dark room where guys can go in topless (mandatory) and pinch each other's nipples and grab crotches. There are cubicles so if both of you are horny for each other, you can get a cubicle. One guy didn't realise his balls were sticking out of his fundoshi until he came out of the dark room though. Outside the club. I left at 4.50AM so this was the sight at around 4.55AM.Sunrise in summer is at 4.30AM so it's not too surprising to have daylight by then. Awaiting my train ride home while still intoxicated. :smokin: The next event is in September so I will look forward to it again! For those who happen to come in September, the event is on 13 September.Despite taking the first train at 5.05AM, actually I didn't experience enough because there was not enough time. However, the event closes at 6 so if I was to leave at 6, it would be very difficult to exit the club because it would be too crowded. Many people leave before 6 or take the first train home. If you are visiting Tokyo, the closest station to ageHa is Shin-Kiba in which you need to walk for 9 minutes. However, the club provides shuttle services to Shinjuku and Shibuya so there's no problem if your hotel is there.A taxi ride from Shin-Kiba to Shinjuku/Shibuya will cost you around 5500 yen so it's more worth taking the shuttle bus.As for me, a taxi ride back to my home in Chiba will cost me 12,000 yen so I have no choice but to wait for the first train. You will need to make reservations (free) at the counter within the club in order to get on the bus. If anyone is coming during the period covering 13 September, do let me know if you are interested to club! Edited July 20, 2014 by darkflame keroberos 1 Quote I'm always running after you. keroberos
I remember my visit to ageha. As a non clubber, the Y4000 was painful to part with lolThe gogoboys dancing and money stuffing were quite memorable and i felt quite shy standing so close to them Since I don't give enough information about bars and clubs, here goes one to compensate.Yesterday I attended Muscle Beach @ ageHa.As some of you may know, ageHa is something like Zouk in Singapore but on a much bigger scale.Every quarter there is a gay event held there. I was moving here and there so I didn't find time to get up close to those gogoboys. Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me. nicefatboy
For the guests looking for hotels in Tokyo. I do feel that Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku is a good location. its very central. and while rates are a bit higher, you can get rooms from S$125 if you book early. Shinjuku Station is the intersection of many lines so you dont have to waste too much time traveling. Sometimes its worth paying a premium for the convenience. I stayed at hotels further from the station but dread the 15 min trek in cold winter weather to and from the station.

Actually I think this one of the bigger club events in Asia. I'm not sure if Songkran is bigger i.e. G circuit as I've never been there. Could hardly chat with anyone.Just like Singapore, Japanese guys tend to form cliques. There are guys who come alone but the inherent shyness forms a barrier. If you are alone, sometimes the ang moh think you are Japanese and cannot speak English. It is also quite noisy at the dance area so chatting is difficult. There are places to sit and rest outside the dance area. However time does pass very fast if you intend to dance beyond 5.Not too sure if they are the same guys who go to Nichome. Am bad at recognising Japanese faces. The guys there are of different ages and types. Many 40+ guys too. Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me. Guest Guest
Not too sure if they are the same guys who go to Nichome. Am bad at recognising Japanese faces.Hahaha, what a strange statement coming from you darkflame-san, thought you would have no problems recognising Japanese faces as they are basically the same as Singaporean faces. But oh, does this mean you are bad at recognising Singaporean faces too? Wow. doddysapta
