darkflame
There are a few bars along the central street which cater to foreigners e.g. Advocates Cafe. Would be nice to go there first, chat with a few people and maybe you can follow them to a bar or get introduced to one. Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me. Guest
Hello, I'm not sure if this question has been asked and discussed in the thread before, so if it was, please bear with me. I would like to understand what's the difficulty level of hooking up with the locals through apps. I've read somewhere that they tend to shy away from foreigners who doesn't speak Japanese. I'm not sure if I wanna fork out so much to hire escorts or go to saunas for sure that I may be shot down as I don't really fit the stereotypes (bear, G-men, muscular etc) being an average guy next door. So I just want to understand ways to hook up with locals and if I do, which kinds of hotels allows us to bring back guests? Thank you. HendryTan
Nakasendo Path : A good alternative look at Japan small towns - "Japan Hour" style . If if you can gather 6-8 similar minded friends, call the agency for a customised 5 day tour . You can sleep in small town Japan inns with your mate (2-3 ? a room), dip in Japan Onsen bath . Feast on kaisaike dinner. Don't have to use the one that the reporter used. Do a Google, several agencies offer it. When I went last month , I went with walkjapan - the original company that started this theme tour , they cater mainly to non-jap. http://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/travel/walking-the-nakasendo-trail-in-japan

But it figures since the weather would be so hot and humid then. I guess you bring a towel to soak up the sweat and sunglasses to look cool, but I have never seen people wearing sunglasses at ageHA specially. As for the pre-ageHa party, that depends on what is stated in the flyer. If it says underwear only, you got to wear underwear then. Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me. Also wondering if they normally have sufficient lockers to keep belongings. Do they check ID? And can u use photocopy ID instead? Please go early for the event. If possible, please be at Shin-Kiba station by 11pm. The queue is very very long by 11.45pm. And it extends outside the club premises. Handphones are allowed in the venue. There are sufficient lockers and are located outside the club so you must put your stuff in the locker before you enter the club. IDs will be checked at the club entrance. Most Japanese will bring their driver licence, foreign residents their residence cards and tourists their passports. Copies of IDs are not accepted. Showing your passport at the checkpoint between ID check and payment counter will get you 50% discount so you need only pay 2000 yen. There is an ATM inside the club but due to foreign card charges, I suggest you bring at least 15,000 yen if you are quite the drinker and want to makan too. (There is a food court inside too.) Otherwise, for the budget clubber like me, I would just bring 8000 yen. Muscle Beach is sponsored by GX3 and they are usually generous with the goodie bag. To get the goodie bag, I would recommend you to stay until 4am. The first trains usually begin running by 4.30am and it will look like 7am in Singapore then due to the early sunrise in summer. If you are intending to head back earlier, you need to book your shuttle bus tickets inside the club because they will be sold out by 12.30am if I recall correctly. There's a new sauna in Shibuya called Shibuya Street. http://s-street.jp/ No English on the website or any mention of foreigners, but what is usually understood is (Asian) foreigners who go there can speak some Japanese. I would suggest Shinjuku instead if you don't really speak Japanese. And Shibuya Street's mascot is quite well drawn: Edited June 12, 2016 by darkflame Quote I'm always running after you. Same for Ikebukuro too. The reason for most underwear nights is because most saunas in Japan ("hattenba") have to abide by a Japanese law which prohibits nudity even in these establishments. (That's what I heard though.) (The same type of law where Japanese porn mosaics the genitals but doesn't do so for the anus.) I guess they will need legal assistance in order to change their establishment type to one where nudity is permitted, and that needs money. Nudity is allowed when you get into a room or cubicle since it would be defined as 'private space'. This nudity thing is quite 'prohibited' in Tokyo. It is not really enforced in other prefectures as I noticed the saunas in other cities have more 'skin' theme days. But it is thanks to this law that there are many successful Japanese underwear brands selling in Japan. Some people do look better in underwear than fully nude. Guest Backpacking
On 10/12/2014 at 8:48 PM, darkflame said: JR rail pass is usually worth it if you are using Shinkansen or trains that have an extra express surcharge. Normally, I'd recommend the 7 day pass because I don't think you are going to travel that far for all 11 days. To make your 14 day pass worth it, you need to travel to two regions away from Tokyo i.e. Osaka and perhaps somewhere like Tohoku/Kyushu. And also, for a 14 day pass, it's better to have a travel period of more than 14 days in that case. For bus, it covers some bus routes but ask JTB to advise you on the routes you can take. Tokyo has 3 main railway companies, JR (Japan Railways), Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. The rest are smaller private railway companies like Keikyu, Tobu, Seibu etc. The JR pass only allows you to take lines belonging to JR. But JR is roughly enough because it covers key areas in Tokyo with the Yamanote line i.e. Tokyo's circle line. Hi, I am planning to spend at least 3 weeks in Japan covering Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. May I ask if the JR Rail Pass is absolutely needed? Does it depend on the frequency of using the trains to make it worth the cost? I have heard from friends who went there without buying the pass since they were usually only there for 4-5 days and they bought other pass from the train station or airport itself and said it is sufficient. I'm trying to figure out what's the cost like as the JR Rail Pass is really steep for me and also if they cover public buses as well. Other than that, I would like to ask for your kind advice about travelling in Japan during summer. What should I take note of?

It depends whether the JR pass can help you reduce transport expenses for the 3 weeks. If the total expense without using the JR pass is more or less equal to the JR pass' value, you can forgo the JR pass. You can use Hyperdia or Jorudan to calculate the train fares for each journey. In general, the 7 day JR pass will come in handy for you because it will break even when you perform a round trip between Osaka/Kyoto and Tokyo with the shinkansen. In the case that you want to spend more time in Kansai, you can consider the 14 day pass, in which you need to make more trips using shinkansen or limited expresses. In general, the core areas of Osaka and Kyoto are poorly served by JR lines so the lines you take will not be covered by JR pass (or need to walk a lot). Tokyo is one of the cities where JR lines provide good access to core districts. Public buses are not covered under the JR pass if I recall correctly. These are the stuff I can think of summer in Japan: - bring wipes if you perspire a lot - look out for fireworks festivals/temple festivals - climb Mt Fuji (only permitted in summer) - always hydrate on a sunny day - use a face towel to wrap around your neck to soak up the sweat if you are hiking - shorts become the norm in summer Quote I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me.

initialtalo
Hi, I would like to seek for those experience guys who's went to 24kk before. I was wondering are they provided luggage storage services? and I would like to know if yes, what is the size or they have a room with tag? Due to the 12hours tickets is interesting and also can used as accommodation, then I can save the expenses for outside accommodation if able to keep things here for over night. Thanks for your kindness advises.

Thanks for your kindness advises. Are you intending to sleep at the common area (which will cost 2,900Yen for 14 hour overnight stay) or inside one of the private rooms? If you are staying at the room, the rates are as follows: http://www.juno.dti.ne.jp/~kazuo24/shinjyuku/koshitu.htm If you are staying in the room, you will be able to leave your luggage in the room. Otherwise, you may wish to consider depositing them in the locker which right outside the 24kk besides the staircase. It should cost around 500Yen (or thereabout) to place your luggage there overnight. The bottom level locker should be able to take in cabin size luggage size. You can refer to the map for details on the locker: https://www.google.com.sg/maps/@35.6898129,139.7088101,3a,15y,20.87h,84.4t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssN6u-T0SJmcA5SXrFB2cCg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en If I am not mistaken, if you are staying in the common area, they do have limited cabin-size lockers to place your luggage too. You may enquire at the counter for details before you purchase ticket. Have a good time there.

I dint use jr rail pass due to after calculating.. is more expensive than normal pass.. except you need use the train go far in short period.. for three weeks, you can use normal pass + night bus to Tokyo from Osaka. Last year I spent 2 weeks for Kyoto, Osaka & Tokyo. For between Kyoto & Osaka, can used KTP. It's also cover to,Kobe, Nara & Himeiji
bonekaz
Hi guys, I'm planning a last minute trip to Tokyo in August during the National Day week. I've never been to Japan much less Tokyo, and I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some cheap homestay places or airbnbs that's not too far from the main city area? Or would you guys recommend staying away from the Shinjuku district?
