That's right. Christmas is not a holiday in JP. However, Japanese are still celebrating X'mas. Avoid shopping on 24 Dec as the malls are packed like sardine. I was invited to a Christmas party on X'mas eve in Tokyo. I went to the mall to get a bottle of wine for the party and it took me almost a hour to pick one, queue up for payment, etc. The New Year is a big thing for Japanese (similar to our CNY) where they will visit the shrines at 12am, New Year to pray for a good year. Shops will generally be closed one or two days prior to New Year and open on a day or two after New Year day. Shops (in particular in the non-tourist places) may close on New Year Day.

 

If you are taking the subway, do note that the Ginza line which runs from Shibuya to Ueno and Asakusa will be non-operational on certain parts of the line from Saturday December 28 2019 to Thursday January 2 2020.

I have not been to Haard before. From the look of it, it is the typically cruising club in Tokyo where people will go to hook up with guys for fun. I have been to others such as Gate In, in the past, where there are themes (e.g. Executive Wear Top, and bottomless). For these places, it tend to be busy in the evenings. These places generally do not have the dry/wet sauna, onsen facilities. As such, it tends to be cheaper.

Hokuokan has the age segregation system. Those under 40 have rooms to play in the cellar and the older ones on the 4th and 5th floors. Lockers, bath, sauna and steamroom are common for all. If you are over 40, you would indeed mostly see rather old guests.

I planned to visit the one in Ueno but didn't because I afraid I might not enjoy the crowd there.

As I don't speak Japanese too, and Shinjuku one is filled with both local and foreigners guests which are very enjoyable.

I had local, foreigners which consists of Asians, Whites and Whites there during my visit. HEHE

I did overnight once in 24kaikan. Actually twice lol. Saved on hotel but i did pay for locker at the train station to put my big luggage and just bring a daypack with me. Alternatively, u can rent their private room, paying separate charge of course.
