Any idea what happened to Sugar Ray?

They are one group who produce really cool music.

My favourite - Someday - is still my best like. Brings back some memories..just like the song.

8 years ago, one of my ex bf, after 9 months with him, and was there for him in his depression and his financial problem, decided to call it off.

We used to play this piece in his rented house and chill out.

Well, he thought I was emotionally very supportive but financially I can't scoop him out from his financial burden.

So he decided to be practical, dumped me for a rich well off 50 plus white guy, who was a CEO in one of the established bank here.

And he played this song for me when I walked out of his place after packing my stuff.

8 years later when we met again, he looks so much older, still have financial issues, because the white chap left the country.

I am now financially stable but I just don't feel for him anymore.

Wanted to keep in touch but, no thanks....All The Best !

My fave B & S song: Boy with the Arab Strap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUCZNufUiIQ

I know that it's not quite alternative but this has been my favourite song of all time. Prefer this one with the new vocals over the screechy original one. Her voice still gives me goosepimples.

Same here. tt's my fav album from B&S.

knowing little abt music streams. but did hear of Radiohead, Bjork, Tori Amos etc from my EX. He enjoyed feeding me different singer names and albums. Still have huge storage of dese albums nowadays.

the few more I love, Keren Ann, Airliner (Sweden, <The last day of August>), Muse, Enigma, My Little Airport (HK), Lube (Russia/Rock)

funny, but I cant stand Bjork. I find her uber annoying. But to each his own.

I also like Martha Wainwright.

And One Dove - believe it or not, this was released in 1993. Ahead of thir time, imho.

I'm a big fan of my little airport and the Hong Kong label POCH that released Joytrendysound's debut (one of the most precious things in my music collection) and the Evening Primrose which did a Blueboy cover. my little airport is releasing a new album in Aug or might have already released it. And of cos Hong Kong has one of the best record stores in the world -- Zoo Records.

And I managed to pick up her collaboration album Lady and The Bird with two of my favorite songs -- Stephanie Says and Suicide is Painless. Great covers.

P & Nicole from MLA are said to have separated, though they never made any announcement. The last album released was in 2009 <poetics – something between montparnasse and mongkok>.

like The pxxn Star, when the party is over, i miss my dear pxxn star...

I used to like Moby a lot. Now I kinda grew out of it or he has lost my interests. Still this is perfect song for a cold rainy night like this. Porcelain from his Play album.

I remember early 2000s when I was introduced to B&S. They have a lot of very good records however, I still consider the first song on their first album the best of them - State I am In. Laid back and intimate. Like me I always say. After all the noise sounds late 1990s, it is nice to have discovered this type of sound. Not that I don't appreciate their more upbeat sounds. Just that this sound hits home..

Woohoo. I like Moby's music too. Bought a few of his cds but only like Play and 18.

This is one of my faves...One of these mornings from 18.

Something from Gusgus, they hail from the same country that gave you Bjork. Totally cool, totally awesome. Check it out.

Also from Tosca who is one half the great Dorfmeister of K&D, an excellent band. Listen to the atmospheric, piano-laden Suzuki.

Two more classics.

Waterfall by the Stone Roses

Ah...Stone Roses!!! I've almost forgotten them.

I feel very high when I listened to their fool's gold and this one 'I wanna be adored'.

But the lyrics a little dark for me.

Look at all these excellent recommendations that were posted while I am away to Turkey (beautiful place btw).

I listened to every single second of Youtube videos embedded on this thread, and I really wanted to respond to many of these but I gave up. Seems like Belle & Sebastian is the new heart throb here. I have known them for years, but they're still on my 'to be listened' list. Guess I'll have to push them up the list soon, the few many recommendations posted on this thread certainly proved the worth of this gifted indie-pop band. Very, very melodic; love it. :)

What are some of your favorite albums/songs of 2011?

I haven't listened to much new music in 2011 *sad* I have 50 albums from 2011 downloaded to my hard drive, but I had only listened to 11 of them. PS. These are artists whose careers I sort of follow, so I downloaded their albums, it's just that I haven't really found the time to listen to them.

I had listened to 2011 albums from... Adele, Avril Lavigne, Battles, Beyonce, Britney Spears, The Decemberists, Kate Bush, Lady Gaga, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, and R.E.M.

As an Avril Lavigne die-hard, of course I am obligated to shortlist her into #1. But the true surprise is her nemesis, Britney, who released the best album of her career. She finally released what she promised us: fierce dance tracks. She may not be the one getting all the limelight, but one listen to Femme Fatale will prove that she had put Lady Gaga's futuristic pop venture to shame. (PS. Born This Way is good, but it's an easy win for Britney.)

But this is an alternative music thread, so forget Avril and Britney. My favorite alternative 2011 album so far is Battles' Gloss Drop. Groovy music despite its complex algorithmic arrangement? You just cannot beat that. PS. I love the video for the licky licky yum yum Ice Cream, almost made me 100% straight.

Critics may beg to differ, nodding their heads to PJ Harvey and James Blake instead. I love PJ Harvey's Let England Shake, but it just doesn't possess as much superhuman power as Pitchfork would have you believe. James Blake is sort of alright, but those few listens on Youtube didn't get me all hot and bothered (read: I still get more dubstep orgasm from Britney's Freakshow and Hold It Against Me than any given James Blake tunes).

More mainstream-oriented press would probably clap their hands on Adele, whose Rolling In The Deep is definitely the ultimate song of 2011 (sans Avril, of course, I'm biased but I'm honest  ). However, the album didn't quite live up to the promising first single, although it does contain a couple other killer songs. It still holds up high on my list, though.

Again, my judgment is impaired 'coz there are tons of other good albums that I am yet to listen to make a fully-informed 'final word'. Here is the full list of the rest of the 50 albums on my hard drive that are yet to be listened, I put a bold on those that I believe have potential shot to be my most favorite album of 2011: ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Amanda Palmer, Arctic Monkeys, Art Brut, Beastie Boys, Beirut, Blondie, Bon Iver, Brian Eno and Rick Holland, CAKE, Colbie Caillat, Cornershop, David Bowie, Death Cab For Cutie, Fleet Foxes, Foo Fighters, Gang Of Four, Incubus, Iron & Wine, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Lucinda Williams, Moby, Mogwai, New York Dolls, Queensyrche, Sepultura, Simple Plan, Sum 41, The Cars, The Chemical Brothers, The Human League, The Kills, The Strokes, The Vines, They Might Be Giants, TV On The Radio, Ulver, and Wire.

And a few more to-be-released albums I am looking forward to before wrapping up the 2011: Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Bjork, Blink-182, Coldplay, Dream Theater, Evanescence, JoJo, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Missy Elliott, Opeth, Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, St. Vincent, Tori Amos, Vanessa Carlton, and tons of other rumored releases. Yes, I'm nuts for actually believing that Vanessa Carlton has a better chance of blowing my head off than Tori Amos (I'm sorry Tori, but I think you've really lost it), ditto for Evanescence and... uhm, Opeth?

RHCP has the best shot out of all these unheard albums; my recent rediscovery of their excellent music would probably give them an advantageous edge of the 'recency' effect. Plus, recalling from their latest effort in Stadium Arcadium, it's very likely that they are still at the top of their game. Bjork, too, but I still have a bad feeling that she's going artsy-fartsy (read: not music) on us again. Meanwhile, Bjork released a second song from her upcoming Biophilia. I didn't quite get the bizarre 'Cystalline', but I gotta say that I like 'Cosmogony' on first listen.

Welcome back derry :) that was an exhaustive list of music you put up. Hope you had fun and your fill of Turkish baths in Turkey. Always fascinated with middle eastern culture and food, I really wanna go to Turkey someday. Thanks for posting Bjork's second song, really liked it. Think I'm gonna get her new album once it's out. 2010 and 2011 are both very low key years for me when it comes to favourite albums and songs. Usually my friends would recommend this and that but I've always been more loyal to the older bands and stuffs that I'm used to listening and growing up with. So when it comes to new stuff, I'm not that well informed and adventurous. So I found it lacking recently and disappointing that bands that I like are producing less and less, almost entirely disappearing off the face of the planet. Anyway, wanna share Cibo Matto with you guys. The awesome Miho Hatori on lead vocals with Sugar Water and Black Hole Sun (Cibo Matto disbanded btw).

Did you go to the Saint Etienne concert a few months back in Singapore? They were great live. Both Sarah and Pete were also really friendly and warm at an earlier interview session in the library. And I do like Sylvie very much and this one too :)

No I missed it!! I was out of town!!! Could've kicked myself!!! I think they were here for the Mosaic Music Festival right? :(

Wah, honestly, I have never seen/heard 90% of the artistes listed here. heh.

i'll make a tiny contribution: I lovelovelove Tears For Fears. I heard one of their songs (Mad World) when watching Donnie Darko. OMG it was so so so good. Their songs frequently touch on human psychology and other weird things LOL.

This song is Advice For The Young At Heart.

2010 and 2011 are both very low key years for me when it comes to favourite albums and songs.

I know right. I found 2009 to be even more depressing, though.

The best mainstream album is possibly Alicia Keys' Elements of Freedom, which is very very mediocre and obviously her weakest output to date.

The alternative press is hyping like what.... Animal Collective? Really? Kill me.

My personal pick for 2009 would be Regina Spektor's Far, which is just a collection of non-offensive well-written tunes, but hardly mind-blowing; a very lackluster year in music.

2010 is no killer, either, but it saw good releases from Rufus Wainwright, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Kanye West, M.I.A., and even two good albums from Christina Aguilera.
