一种更强烈且跨越种族的“新加坡人”国民身份认同已客观存在，土生土长的新加坡人与新移民之间的距离也因此越来越明显。若要协助新移民真正融入本地社会，就必需将他们拉近“新加坡核心”，在不要求他们放弃个人与族群文化身份的前提下，增进他们对国家的认同感。

一个未来新加坡人比率更少的新加坡核心，近年来牵动了人民的担忧，也将本地社群与外来者的对立情绪放大。新加坡国立大学李光耀公共政策学院属下的政策研究所所长贾纳达斯·蒂凡昨天在一场针对移民融合课题的分享会上，向近百名本地民间组织和新移民团体代表指出，为解决移民融合问题，有必要协助新移民逐渐成为这“核心”的一部分，扩大他们与本地社群的共同认同与价值观。

他认为，最理想的新加坡融合模式，是在不要求新移民抛弃个人文化身份的前提下，拉近他们与本地社群的距离。

他说：“成为一名真正的新加坡人，不代表新移民必需减去他们对自己族群与文化的认同，而是表示他们应尝试扩大与本地社群的重叠与交汇空间。”

政策研究所半年前召集本地40多个民间组织和新移民团体的代表，展开四场闭门对话会后总结发现，土生土长的新加坡人与移民群体之间的关系存在多层矛盾。多名社区领袖参昨天也呼吁正视移民融合问题。

例如，讨论结果显示，多数在本地出生的新加坡人认为新移民应该将国家身份认同摆在个人与族群身份之上，并希望他们花更多心思融入本地社群。然而，新移民组织代表却认为，对于初到本地的移民来说，融入本地社群很困难，一些人因此宁愿与自己熟悉的群体交流。

新移民也普遍认为，新加坡人的思想与生活方式过于洋化，而且较不注重个人文化与历史。他们因此担心，融入本地后，自己的文化身份会渐渐稀释。

此外，闭门对话结果显示，外国人选择移民到本地，主要出于经济考量。一些新移民也察觉到，有新加坡人对于他们的到来感到不自在。
